    There is just something so satisfying watching a skilled craftsman like you create complex mechanisms out of raw stock.
    The attention to detail is amazing, especially at this scale.
    Looking forward to seeing the progress on this build.

      Thank you very much!
      It's fun to do the build, but it's also very rewarding to scroll through the comments :)

    Nice done!
    I found out, for me it is more easy to press fit a piece of Precision pipe from Brass or Bronze, in stead of Drilling out a precision bore into a cylinder

      The beauty of doing your own CAD models is you can make non-critical dimensions to suit the tooling you already have.
      Originally, I wanted the bore to be 20mm... Didn't have a reamer, but I had one for 18 - so 18mm bore it was :)

    Wonderful to see the making of the Doll 512/3! I own one of the original models from the 1920's but to see it being built is quite frankly amazing! The boiler on this model is interesting because it has a built in flue pipe that runs from the firebox to the chimney going through the boiler itself so the smoke stack actually has a purpose creating draft and super heating the water in the boiler. I am not sure if this was standard on all the 512/3 models but it is on my one. Love your videos and the music is fantastic!

      @AstraWerke  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Interesting! Would you be willing to email me some pictures of the flue pipe?
      I didn't know about that, so I just designed a straight forward tea-kettle type boiler with no tricks up its sleeve.

      @andysteam1905 Před 9 měsíci

      @AstraWerke Yes of course! I'll remove the boiler from the housing and take pictures with measurements for you. Let me know best place to send them. 👍

      @@andysteam1905Oh, no need to go that far - a picture from underneath through the fire door should be plenty!

    Do you know how many of the 512/2 were produced by Doll & Co. almost 100 years ago? I wonder to what extent the production technology at that time was similar to the one you are using today.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hard to say - there are almost none left today, but that might also have been due to the war.
      Many parts are the same on different types of engine (the cylinder oilers I made last, for example), so I'm sure they had a certain grade of automation - probably with hand-operated fixtures, profile lathe cutters and turret lathes.
      There are factory tours of the Jensen plant on YT, I'd imagine it'd have looked similar to theirs - add to that a foundry.

    How many hours of craftwork did we see here compressed in 12min?

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 9 měsíci

      Hard to pin down, as I usually do an hour here and two hours there throughout the week - six hours maybe?

    STOP! What?! The man famous for not having a mill, the man with a shaper, the man who made a video on "milling in the lathe" with a Myford milling vice...
    ... has the milling option for his Unimat?! (see 2:39)
    When did this happen?!
    (found a video of the Unimat + Mill czcams.com/video/S1Y1nkr6v2M/video.html)

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 9 měsíci

      Had to look it up myself - I got the Unimat 10 years ago - together with the milling attachment:
      czcams.com/video/xzwEa9Qza-w/video.html
      I used it to mill the valve chest of my Doll 362 and the on/off-valve for my vacuum wiper motor.
      Those are about the only purposes this attachment can be used for xD
