    Very interesting and absolutely nothing wrong with it showing it's age. I'd keep it just the way it is. Of course I'm over 50 and have my own "patina"

    Not always easy to figure out why it doesn't run. These things have to be spot on. But you did it :)

      Seriously! If a steam engine has a tight spot, just increase the pressure a little and let it wear in.
      A flame licker... it stops. xD

    I wholly agree with your decision to not mess with it. More stuff is ruined in an attempt to make it 1 percent "better" or for cosmetic reasons.

    I've watched a lot of flame licker videos. But never seen one with such clear and well thought out detective work on the problems with getting them to run well.

      That's what bothered me when I tried to find hints as a newbie. Even the fact that it takes most engines 5 or more minutes of preheating before you can even attempt to start one up is a well-guarded secret!

    Great video! A flame licker/vacuum engine appears quite a bit different from a stirling cycle. However, much like a stirling engine they are a wonderful well crafted useless piece of machinery. Fascinating stuff! Merry Christmas!

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 8 měsíci

      Flamelickers are the Newcomen style of steam engines - all energy input is passed out the chimney, and the friction inside the chimney produces more power than the actual engine does. Unlike stirling engines, these were never used for any actual purpose because they don't have any advantages.
      But they're loud and fun to look at, so...

    • @FangornAthran
      @FangornAthran Před 8 měsíci

      NASA is actually looking at pairing a stirling engine with a nuclear reactor to generate electricity on the Moon, so there are some uses for it in niche applications.

    I have never heard of this kind of engine before. Very interesting!
    I wonder how much of a load you could put on the flywheel before the engine stalls?
    Quite a bit of vibration going on there. You certainly couldn't start them up and then walk away, especially the Rebi R2.
    On the other hand, the Rebi has better protection for the flame.
    Love the slow-motion shots. They really give a good view of the operation of the machine.
    Thank you for this. These little machines are fascinating.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 8 měsíci

      They really don't make alot of power. They also have their favorite operating frequency at which everything is "in rhythm" - as soon as you disturb that by putting a load on it, they'll get into a vicious circle and stall, even if you remove the load.
      Fascinating nonetheless, as you say.

    What a great video! I didn't know this type of engine existed. Now I'm on a search to find one. Do you think if the older one had a flywheel and crankshaft counterbalanced it would run smooth? Thanks for a really well done video. Merry Christmas! Ted

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Well, it'd certainly make things better (although it'd probably take alot of counterweight to balance out the long stroke),
      but since it only makes a short burst of power for about a quarter revolution, it also runs quite rough by nature - and that'd be hard to cancel out.
      A larger flywheel and more ridgid baseplate would probably be an easier way to tie the thing down.

  • @jefflormans5441
    @jefflormans5441 Před 8 měsíci +1

    I think it would be a pity to paint the old engine. It looks fine as it is.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 8 měsíci

      I'd be with you if it was at least painted properly. But it's just a basic layer of paint, no primer or anything and keeps flaking off as it sits.

    • @836dmar
      @836dmar Před 8 měsíci

      I would have to agree. You can’t do much about the inter-granular corrosion so I like the aged look it has. It does appear yours is much better balanced and better built. Great stuff!

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@836dmarWell, I did build mine more beefy than the Rebi, but I think the main reason mine appears to run smoother is because its heavier, runs slower and sits on a straight baseplate so it can't wobble about as much.

    Merry Christmas sir. Thank you for all your videos.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I've done a bit of research and really didn't find any evidence of flame eaters being used commercially.
      Since it's an open cycle (unlike e.g. a Stirling engine), they are terribly inefficient.

  • @pawleymediaconsultantsllc5
    @pawleymediaconsultantsllc5 Před 8 měsíci

    So, you changed the cam profile, on the vintage flame gulper. Great diagnosis. BUT, why do you think the original cam profile was not correct. Have other mechanisms worn, and you are compensating for something, or did someone else install incorrect cam ?

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Well, the Cam roller is pretty corroded and was stuck initially. This may have caused wear, but I can't say if it would have caused the cam pattern to shift into what it was when I got the thing. Maybe I was just too dumb to properly adjust the cam in the first place.
