  • In this video I move my quail chicks out to the garage and talk about culling one of my favorite rabbits, Clove. Clove is a Creme d'Argent, a rare breed of rabbit that set my breeding program up for success when I got her back in 2020. Unfortunately, her time at my rabbitry is coming to an end. This is never an easy thing to talk about, but as a responsible breeder I have to do what is best for my animals.

    Culling is something I’m having a very hard time wrapping my head around. I love my animals all so much, especially my bunnies. I had to cull my first chicken here on our homestead maybe a week ago. Something got ahold of her and ripped her crop open and unfortunately I can’t fix that and I couldn’t let her suffer. So I pulled on my big girl pants, and through tears and lots of prayers I did what needed to be done, then cried some more. Ugh! Being a responsible animal owner and making those tough decisions, can be so heart wrenching. I’m so sorry you’re facing this with one of your favorites. All my hugs and love to you friend!

    Do you have a compost pile set up for all of the hot manure from the quail? Putting their droppings directly on the garden without composting could lead to burning any plants you try to place in the same beds. Love that the size of that section in your garage worked out perfectly for the quail! How lucky is that?!?!

      I was amazed it fit!! Just barely!
      We don’t plant in-ground until around beginning of May, so I figured several months would be enough to break it down 😊

    Hi :) a little tip/hack to help with your quail and your heat plate, I have the same ones, you can use Glad Press N Seal on the top… it won’t cause damage and for the most part the birds don’t bother with it... poke holes for the legs to get through and when it’s dirty just peel it off and put on a new piece… makes clean up so easy and fast!

    • @TealStoneHomestead
      @TealStoneHomestead  Před 2 lety +2

      I have many rabbits, and I don’t make much (if any) profit for them. As a homesteader, vet prices are typically out of the question. I am pretty well educated in illness and medicines for rabbits, so I can typically treat them myself. In this case, I cannot fix Clove. so the kindest thing I can do for her is end her discomfort.

    Theres another homesteading channel called Happy Harvest Homestead where they have lost litters and currently have rabbits that are showing the same symptoms as yours. If its possible get a necropsy done incase it spreads. Rhvd is also making the rounds in the us currently isnt it? I'm in the uk and lost all my rabbits last year to it. Xxx

      Older animals begin to waste away regardless of how much you feed them. She listed off many things it could or could not be. She mentioned treating for worms, for instance. Some rabbits reach a certain age and their intestines stop absorbing the nutrients they need. The responsible thing to do is treat (which she has) and then put the animal out of its misery if treatments are not effective.
