This is one of our favorite loop trails near Chamonix where we climb to the summit of Mont Buet (3098m) via Tre les Eaux and return via the Berard valley. It is a big day hike with some really technical bits. Not suitable for children or dogs. The window for making this hike is quite short as the high altitude covers the summit and the trails with snow for much of the year. In winter Mont Buet is a popular ski touring destination but then using the southern slope from Refuge Berard. This year we had a hot October and we were able to do it snow free. In 2022 we did this in mid September and there was already a considerable amount of snow. Check with the Chamonix Mountain Information office if you plan to do this trip outside of the peak season of mid July to end of September.

I’m in Chamonix next week and plan to do this, do you think it will be ok with the snow? Thanks.

We did this on October 9. You are going roughly 10 days later and this weekend will bring some rain/snow at 2900m. Better check with the Chamonix mountain information office (La Chamoniarde) upon arrival. The approach from Refuge Berard is much more forgiving should there be a little snow cover
