its interesting how people say their faith was almost ruined by pentecostal churches, but my faith was almost ruined by cessationism. Just shows that no matter what side of the spectrum its on, there is true damage that can be done.

Why is speaking in tongues so important? I’m legitimately curious. Why do people want this so much?
I’m speaking of the charismatic speaking in tongues idea not languages as we see in scripture.
      Let me know thanks

@@benburrow5028Science has concluded that praying in tongues actually increases our immune system. The bible says to pray in the spirit,,referring to our own personal prayer language, to build up our own spirits.
I was taught by some late great Christian patriarchs that the gifts of the Spirit are always around us, but, we are like a radio receiver. If we aren't charged up in our spirit, we don't perceive them.
I function in the revelatory gifts, a word of wisdom, or, a word of knowledge, and discernment.
The appearance or knowing of any gifts of the Spirit is manifested to each person in a different way.
I've only met 2 other people worldwide who receive the gifts the same way I do.

    Such a blessing
Just to add these views will fall on kine with the vast majority of smaller Pentecostal churches in Africa

I was Methodist and got a little booklet on the Holy Spirit. I never even heard of tongues. Ever. Knelt and received. I had to go to the store where I got the booklet to ask if there was a church that believed this stuff. The clerk laughed and listed several churches. I never looked back. That was in ‘74.

    🤣😂 Sounds like chocolate milk!!
I wanted to share that in highschool after being baptized and growing up in the church, I was depressed and growing through thoughts of suicide for multiple reasons. I remember praying very fervently and frequently for God to show me himself supernaturally through healing my thoughts and perspective of life.
One Sunday, I humbly walked up to the alter for prayer of repentance. This was strange for a consistent member of the church to do and I battled internally until I got to the alter. I don't remember the prayer, all I know from my end was that I was fully repentant, sincere and desired God. In that moment, I experienced trembling throughout my body. This feeling followed me home. I laid on my bed, confused about what was happening but so happy to have felt God in this way and to have found freedom from the things I was battling.
Every Sunday after that for about 2 months I was feeling His presence more in Worship services. And I wasn't "slain" in the spirit, but it almost felt like I was gently being moved to my knees, head bowed in Worship.
Thanks for the video and book recommendations!!!!

Saved in a homeless shelter (was a junkie that became clean in a single visit from the Holy Spirit), led to a charismatic fellowship that collapsed after 7 years, led to a reformed fellowship and stayed 12/13 years (including lockdown Zoom meetings). I have love for both, though the latter were not cessationist - they just walked as if they were - yet the emphasis on sound exegesis and the centrality of the cross helped heal the fire damage from my first fellowship. I did dry up in that second fellowship as nobody outside the leadership was trusted to be able to operate in the gifts of the Spirit whilst they themselves did not operate in them despite believing in them theologically speaking. Their teaching was edifying and I did grow whist there.
Out of fellowship for 1 year because I could not stand with a fellowship who - when tested - slammed the doors shut in obedience to the government. Not an unforgivable sin but certainly a reflection of where their hearts were really at in regards to trusting God. I started watching this show a month or so ago, got back into fellowship (elsewhere) after somebody said something that convicted me. So I thank God for this show, also.

I’ve been in a reformed sensationalist church for about 10 years after around the 4th year I was craving God in a deeper deeper way without knowing my spirit was just thirsting for Gods power I would tell my husband but he loves our church and very slowly I was going back into the world to a point in my life I was very depressed and hopeless, also drinking this past year , I didn’t not recognize myself (I’m not a drinker )I always prayed asking God how did I come this far , one day God delivered me and filled me with his spirit nothing I’ve ever felt before I was filled with love , kindness , self control , mental clarity , He removed the desire to drink, my depression gone , and a desire to serve Gods people .. I love this podcast because this is the middle ground I need . Praise God!!!

Very balanced guys! It’s funny how when we’re raised in a more “reserved” church setting that brings biases against charismatics and then end up in a charismatic setting that debunks those biases, how you learn how to discern more of what’s Biblical and what is not. I will say the “reserved” setting helped me love the Scriptures and I have that same love still today! Grateful for you guys!

I’m not even a few minutes in but I’m excited for this episode.
I grew up in a church heavy in Oneness Pentecostal roots and practicing it heavily. Gifts, miracles, move of the Spirit , everything on the list. I love the atmosphere but being raised by a more evangelical theologian father caused me to become so much more curios about what is true and not true. I felt my church overemphasized the gifts over the “gift giver” (Jesus).
My whole world got rocked when I got the opportunity to lead a youth group in a nearby church that’s full on evangelical/Baptist. It was major culture shock for me! Haha. I didn’t knew a church existed where move of the spirit and tongues was not emphasized. My goal is to live a spirit filled life partnered with the proper theology of a well informed evangelical background.

This was so refreshing to hear. I really appreciate hearing a balanced view on the gifts of the Spirit and you guys' personal journeys.
I started going to church in the 90s in Australia after the whole Toronto blessing movement came to churches here.
I went to meetings for over 10 years, and while friends were falling over and laughing etc, it never once happened to me.
It was implied that it was my fault, that I wasn't receiving, but I eventually got so discouraged that I stopped going to church altogether.
10 years later, I was watching a CZcams video of someone associated with Bill Johnson's team, and found out they were going to be in Australia. I had no idea who Bill Johnson was, and just came for the other guy.
I was prayed for, but again nothing happened. The following year I decided to go to the same conference, but procrastinated and didn't get there until the end of the last session on the last day. There was a line of people standing for prayer, going from the front of the church to the overflow room.
When I walked in the door of the church, not expecting anything, my legs started to shake. I wondered if my blood sugar was low. I went to the end of the long line and during the hour I waited for prayer, not only my knees, but my whole body started shaking and I just wanted to cry, then started to openly cry (which I never do, especially in front of people)
Before I was even prayed for, I was down on the ground and my body was making these movements going up and down for about an hour. Everyone had left by this stage and someone had to escort me out as they wanted to lock the building.
I continued crying off and on all the 1 hour drive home, feeling the closeness of God's presence, and feeling like a huge weight and been lifted, having battled depression.
I don't understand why I had wait 20 years, or even exactly what happened that day, but I hope it can encourage someone who is going through a similar dry experience at charismatic churches, and may even doubt God's love for them.
Don't base Jesus's love for you on having such an experience. You may or may not eventually have such an encounter, but He's always with you and understands everything you're going through.

@@TheRemnantRadio thanks for sharing your testimonies on this topic.. it's really interesting too see how God has been working in your lives and how He brought you all together!
personal story time: I come from a cessationist background having been raised in a Baptist church. I guess I was aware that some denominations practiced the miraculous gifts but I questioned its legitimacy because of my church's emphasis on the inerrancy and completeness of the Bible. Much like you guys talked about here, there was a suspicion surrounding personal revelation because they believe the Bible has everything we need to live life in God's will/ God told us what we need to know, or that the miraculous gifts were simply given to help launch the church.
But as I grew in Christ I longed for more of an outpouring of the Spirit. I began to see the beauty of these gifts, being exposed to people who use them and after doing my own research on the topic. This channel has greatly helped me grow in understanding.
It's challenging though because a lot of prophetic words, visions, or dreams that I've been hearing are concerning the "rapture" or 7 year tribulation (or Trump's second term 😬) and doesn't necessarily line up with what I believe the Bible is saying regarding these matters. Anyway, you guys have helped me discern these things much better and I am eternally thankful ☺️

I’m so glad I found this. I have friends that brought me to Christ that go to a pretty charismatic church . I have attended their church a few times but there was so much I didn’t understand. I regularly attend a church where the board don’t really seem to understand or be open to moves of the Holy Spirit or spiritual gifts. I am somewhere in between. I have identified that I have a prophetic gift but I struggle to find ways to learn and grow in it because I don’t know anyone else who experiences the things that I do. My charismatic friends have this appearance of being righteous. They speak in tongues, they are prophetic but there’s something happening there that I know is not quite right but I can’t put my finger on it. It’s all quite frustrating for me.

Some churches can be very chaotic and others are orderly and don’t give the spirit time to do anything just rush through service to be on time to get out of service. But, I liked the suggestion of small groups to work on spiritual gifts... although I’m not sure of how to “work” on them exactly I shall research, read and pray on that.

Thank you for sharing your stories. I think it’s equally unfair to say that cessationists are all the same. Notable cessationists such as McArthur, Peters, etc. believe the signed apostolic gifts did not continue. Not that all ceased. You don’t see people being transported by the spirit, walking on water, resurrections, limbs growing back, I can go on and on. If all gifts were in operation you would experience those as much as the “mental” gifts such as tongues and word of wisdom.

Though I do want to point out that there are many modern day stories of miraculous events occurring such as limbs growing back and resurrections, check these two lectures by Craig Keener, he’s written a 1200 page book on modern day miracles

Aside from that, great video guys, I'm really excited for this series. I'm just now coming into "Earnestly pursu(ing) love and eagerly desir(ing) spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy." Thanks for the good work you do on the gifts..
What does the gift of tongues feel like for different people? I know there's not much Biblically on how it's supposed to feel (or is there?) but what does experience with the gift yourselves feel like? Like a Holy Spirit takeover of vocal faculties? Like God supplying these words and us speaking them out? curious because I've had the latter experience (where it felt like God brought words to mind and I was to say them out loud) twice now, but not sure if that's the normative experience in the church. Thank you brothers.

I usually don't comment my own experiences and I've only ever told my friend the whole thing but I had a VERY similar experience to Josh. I saw an angel that was glowing brilliantly and I thought it was God for a second and the same passage about how the devil can still masquerade as an angel of light was what made me realize it wasn't an angel of God. That's not everything in the story but it was really similar to Josh's story.

Loved hearing your stories. I am learning about both camps and lean towards cess. but open. Have only seen the extreme char. and l am interested in the more healthy theological char. How does the gifts play out in the church? I did not get a picture of that in this video but I look forward to watching the other videos. My critique with your stories is these experiences you all had were a working of God. I guess I don’t understand how you correlate it to the gifts? In your stories, the other people involved were not aware of what was happening. These people would not claim that they had the gift of healing, etc. To me, these experiences can also be explained through the cess view…God can work miraculously, God can heal, etc.

    • @TheRemnantRadio
      @TheRemnantRadio  Před 3 lety +1

If you mean "the opposite" by saing "can we review words that actually landed" Yes I think we will try and do this in the future. the problem with hunting these words down is quite different. The words that are the most accurate are the words that were given over individuals in a local church setting (as is prescribed in Scripture). The problem is, IDK how to find these individuals to see if the word came to pass. Its not that hard to find different words, its just hard to verify them affter the fact. But we will try and do this in the future.

So I sense things. About people or situations etc. Is that a gift of the Spirit or just good critical thinking/discerning skills? When do you know it’s an outright working of a gift of the Holy Spirit when it’s not obvious like healing or tongues?

    • @jellygoblin6296
      @jellygoblin6296 Před 3 lety +8

I think it would depend on whether you could naturally know that about the person or situation. Good critical thinking/discerning can also be called wisdom, I think, and that comes from knowing what is the truth about the world and life and God in the Bible. If they are things that are quite specific and you couldn't otherwise know, it is potentially some revelations/word of knowledge.

I knew I had to reply when I saw you used the word "sense". My favorite passage for the gift of discernment is, "But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."-Hebrews 5:14 It operates through the five senses. And the gifts of wisdom and knowledge often accompany this gift. It's a more difficult gift to nail down. Also, most of us as believers can tell the difference between obvious good and evil, especially when we know scripture well. But, this quote by Charles Spurgeon really describes what the gift of discernment truly is:
Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong.
It is knowing the difference between right and almost right. ~ C. H. Spurgeon
      I hope that helps!

That’s kinda heavy to acknowledge. Because now I must ask, how can I serve others with it? Any input? How do people with this gifting serve others?

God has ceased sign gifts until the Trib when he empowers two witnesses to speak against the beast. Gibberish is a false understanding of tongues. Even the original gibberish speakers of the 1890s got it wrong, which lead to Azusa street leaders getting it wrong. Hindus do it and definitely do not have the Holy Spirit sign gifts. To clarify, cessationists believe in modern day miracles, not sign gifts. God heals through faith and prayer and fasting, not by giving someone the gift so people could be healed by touching a hanerchief, speaking a command, or crossing a shadow. The devil is a great deceiver and corrupts people's beliefs in this area.

Pentecost* is a leavened feast**, but it's not really optional for Christians, as it wasn't optional for Jews. It corresponds to the Holy Place*** in the temple. One must pass through it to enter the Most Holy place (holy of holies). Now, the veil was torn when Christ died (Matthew 27:51), signaling access to that innermost sanctum for all, but there is no back door.
    * The third part of the Feast of Weeks (Exodus 34:22, Numbers 28:26, Deut. 16:10,16; Lev. 23:15-20)
    **Leviticus 23:17
***Many Jews assume the showbread (literally, bread of the face, bread of the presence) was unleavened as Josephus says, but the description of the showbread sounds very much like normal loaves. Rabbinical tradition says they were to be stacked with care to prevent crushing. With matzoh this wouldn't have been a concern. (?) When David and his men ate the showbread, it simply contrasts the "consecrated" bread (lehem kodesh) with normal bread (lehem) (1 Samuel 21:5). In the description of the kinds of bread made by the sons of Aaron in 1 Chronicles 23:29 showbread is distinct from grain offerings and unleavened "cakes" (Hebrew "raqiq" Strong's 7550).
This is huge topic for Bible study, so just a few important points are made.

Well brother one particular difference is that you went form not practicing to practicing. I went from practicing to not practicing. I now see we were supposed to be leading people to Christ and sanctification but we were leading people into falling out and speaking tongues. When I look back at where my focuses were then I cry. I realized I had forsaken the simple means of Grace that promote unity and sanctification and that's the issue I also see. Where charismatic practices are elevated the simple means become suppressed. Please understand I can only truly speak from what I've seen as I know you can too. I was on the board, I helped in the youth program and played in the praise and worship band but I count it all loss for the gain of church unity. I also understand that not everyone is to have to have the same gifting but what I saw what a whole other thing.
