Is Absinthe A Prague Staple Or TOURIST TRAP?

- Many people will tell you that this social drink is not the real deal, that it's just a tourist trap or a scam. If that is the case, why does Johnny Depp love it so much?
In this video, we will explore the world of Czech Absinthe and will delve deep into a rabbit hole from which there is no return: the world of alcohol market wars and disinformation. Swiss and French claim the throne to the Absinthe world, disregarding the fact that the use of absinthe has been recorded in alcohol-based beverages for at least 2000 years.
Czech Absinth is not the real Absinthe they say.
We've contacted the owner of the Bairnsfather Absinth distillery, Kyle. Together with his help, we've created this video, which will hopefully shed some light on what's really going on behind the closed doors of the liquor stores and absinthe bars in Prague.

Ernest Hemingway used to mix Absinthe and Champagne and called it "Death in the Afternoon".
Fantastic! I've never danced with the Green Fairy. I may have to try it.
Absinthe…the late 1980’s in Okinawa, Japan we had it as a flaming drink. And there was a rainbow colored absinthe, and one that was called, Purple Haze. It was served in a beer mug with ice. All the drinks tasted like, licorice. 🥃🍷
The Absintherie is a good absinthe shop/bar. As someone who doesn't like anise, I like Czech absinth- like Absinth 35. It's 70% alcohol and a high thujone content...
Really loved your video again. Funny that my country The Netherlands, where all kind of softdrugs are legal, absinth had forbidden. Not anymore (i think, but not sure).
Absinthe aside, everyone NEEDS to visit Prague! It’s magical
drinking absint was in the past ...we drink rum , vodka , brandy , whisky ,slivovice , griotka a fernet..))
@@petex3909 by the state of some party makers looked like there mixing them all up 🤣
I knew Pernod was a large volume producer of absinthe prior to the ban in 1905 when they changed to producing the aniseed flavoured drink to stay in business. I will drink Pernod and water occasionally when in France but there are much cheaper varieties available which are just as good, they are called 'pastis'. I have never tried absinthe but have had wormwood in a green Berliner Weiss beer - popular in many German cities either uncoloured (amber), green with added wormwood or red with added raspberry juice (I think). A very entertaining video Valery, well done.
Another great video! Music, editing, writing, cinematography and talent all first class.
Your videos are always a highlight of the week!
Agreed. This one really deserves to go viral.
Thank you so much to clarify this topic! When I first moved to Prague two years ago, my brother came to visit me, we went to Cafe v lese and we tried absinthe. I was disappointed to be served without flames, but just an additional glass of water. Now, finally, i know that cafe v lese serves absinth in the proper way :)
You do go the extra yard to keep us entertained Valery...long may it continue. In my experience, Absinthe is the last step before you start downing White Spirits or Turpentine 🥴Love the jumper/sweater😎
Half Absinth, half cherry liqueur, you have to try ...!!! Great taste!
Absinth makes the heart grow fonder! Thanks for the video!
Bravo, Valery of Real Pague Guides on a very well researched and documented video. Kyle's Bairnsfather traditionally crafted absinthe is very respected. Hope Johnny takes you for an absinthe next time he's in town :) As always, history with a smile !
Hope you had a nice run!
I went to The Green Devil my last time in Prague (June 2019).
Humor as always. This makes it fun to watch your videos and they are educational to👍.
I like american Absinthe. I love Czech beer. I will be in Prague in early 2023 for a few days and eagerly look forward to my stay. My hope is that in 2024, I will be able to spend 2 months in an apartment there
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 outstanding, I have learnt a few thing’s 1 Pernod is Absinthe, I don’t like Pernod but will try a Czech Absinthe when I visit and the bar you showed😉. 2 all I knew about it is all the myths you have now discussed and dispelled👍. I can honestly tell people I have had it, now I know what it is😁
You guys are brilliant keep the videos coming 😘😘😘😘
"But Valery you're fine!" Ah Vaclav, using manly logic and reason on a determined woman . . . you have so much to learn! 😊 Seriously though, great episode you guys! This one deserves to go viral, and I hope it does! Oh, and since I'm a pagan and it arrives next week - Happy Winter Solstice! 🎄🎅🎄
The one and only time I had Absinthe, I woke up on the beach with no idea how I got there
Edit: I don't live near the beach
🤣
Oh yes! Jiri Holik and Alco Holik were twins. I’m just a Becherovka fan and I also love Staropramen beer. Regards from Budapest
There are several good Czech absinthes. A few are from Zufanek distillery. The only trouble is that for every good Czech absinthe, there are 20+ bad ones that call for the flaming shot method.
I've been to the Green Devil a few years ago. It was fun, educational, and i had such a good time, i went twice.
And with this video, I'll have a little glass of absinthe and Becherovka which I got many years ago and never opened.
Do you still say na zdravi with aperitifs?
Yes we do 👍
I should have come to Prague to "help" you with this one LOL
Yes, you should have 🤣
Another interesting video from here.
Absinthe?
Well, probably better stick to Pilsner Urquell and - now and then - some Becherovka at
U Kocoura and U Rotundu, like in the old times. Keep up the good work!
absolutely underrated content, 10/7
I used to have Absinthe at Vinopolis, now closed, and they also had Absinthe tasting sessions. I have a French absinthe in my drinks cupboard.
you are amazing and this video is amazing. im sorry johnny never replied your invite to drink some absinthe!
Absynthe makes the heart grow fonder,
Great video again ! Thanks.
You said that Victor Oliva tried Absinthe in Paris and brought it back to Prague, how can it be that Absinthe was already in Czech republic then? I believe Czech tried to cash it into the connection: Paris-Artist-dissolute life drinking Absinthe- Bohemien term. It would be interesting to understand why the parisian artists were called Bohemien, maybe the key is in this, but for what I know there are not proves of Czech distillation/production of absinthe until the fall of iron curtain. Had the chance to hear a presentation done by Ted Breaux in 2014 when he said that there are no official documents that prove Czech Absinthe was produced before the '90s
There is evidence Czech absinth was produced from the mid 1800's- not long after Becherovka started being produced. Both are macerated herbs in brandy, so it isn't a stretch to believe Czech absinth has been around longer than when it started to become popular. Cocktails and liquor were developed to make herbs which were considered medicinal more palatable, so it makes a lot of sense herbal drinks were developed and in use before they became fashionable as drinks for socializing...
Well done, alto I have never tried it, .... perhaps I should put it on my list, ... right ??
Love your videos but I wish you were more consistent in providing specific information about the locations you are visiting so I can find them easily on my next visit.
Loved the talking bye me bottles. Is the Green Devil a cousin of the Jersey Devil?
absinthe makes the hearth grow fonder...lol.
I finally watched your very good research!!! Great job!
Thank you! Happy you liked it!
Interesting video. Lighting a spirit on fire is such a waste of spirit. I wasn't aware of Czech Absinthe; another reason to visit!
Merry Christmas Val 🎄 🎅✝️ from Philadelphia 🇺🇸
drink homemade Moravian Slivovica instead :-))) like I do :-))
That could be a whole new video series :) But my favorite is absinthe.
I want to try Absinthe, now that I know about the green fairy tales. Thanks.
I thought drinking absinthe is just a quirk of the few Czech people i know. When converting the prices on the menu i was shocked how expensive drinks are, or is it just that bar, or the absinthe?
👍 👍 👍!!!
I missed your trade-mark byyyyeeeeeee! Love your jumper and still prefer the beer for which the Czechs are better known.
In beer we trust 🍻
Na Zdravi 🔥🔥🔥
Great video! Fascinating, informative and well edited. I was rivited. You might check your pronunciation of malaria. Doesn't rhyme with diarhea.
5:35 pulka videa a uz vozrala jak carskej dustojnik
Imagine if johnny did come for a video.
I think I am drunk on Valery.
So does Absinthe turn people into the Hulk?
Valery is a Russian meaning the only 2 things she drinks are vodka, and vodka.
Aren't the two types of absinthe, distilled and macerated, completely different drinks, not just two variations?
If I'd say that here I'd land on a pitchfork
For ALL Czech Sorcerers and Witches 🧙♂️🧙♀️🧹🧹🧹
there is also another drink that is widely consumed in the rest of the world... it's called water🤣🤣🤣
We know, we concidered it to be good drink for frogs and fish not people.
@@Geker3 🐸🐸🐸
Nightquill- us medicine I’m convinced is this very thing
The bairnsfathers are delicious!
Does Absinthe make you make out with your twin sister?
Dude, party the fuck up.
No, it’s garbage.
