Opening an exit node and get hunted down by national forces because they think you're committing every possible crime simultaneously
@Die German Pen Guy "Geez officer, twelve counts of distribution of CP? I can assure you that's just from the Tor exit node I run"

Just have someone code some mega-worms that install a tor relay on everything it go through...

I'm setting up 10 vps for this
I will also setup one, but I mean if you are able to follow a tutorial everyone can do this

You won't. I just wasted 4 hours try to setup a test node on a raspbian vm. The problem is you have to use linux, & linux is trash. I've been using computers since I was 4 & I can't wrap my head around this ridiculously complicated operating system. So many errors, no good beginner guides to linux, & an entire community which uses the command line as a crutch to their garbage user interface. I don't want to touch linux again for another 4 months until I end up inevitability giving it another chance only to get pissed again.
I bet tons of people want to do this, but they won't because the process is impossible unless you're an advanced linux user.

Oof, Australia? Damn
yup
I also live in australia. Have you done anything in terms of working with Tor and setting up personal nodes since this comment? If so how did it go
you're literally being the youtube algorithm, this is the 3rd time i've had interest in certain topics and you upload a video about said topic like 3 days later, just got a bridge running literally yesterday
same bro
if everyone watching this video was to set up a relay, the Mental Outlaw community would be the biggest contributor to TOR in terms of infrastructure (if i did my napkin maths right)
@Tungsten Dioxide and here I am planning to use my 2mbps wimax as a tor node as soon as I repaste an old laptop I have lying around

This channel in general is so useful, I just can thank you and share the videos, keep doing this!
I'm doing my part! I used to run a relay a few years ago and now I started it again.
This is extremely awesome. I am setting up one node today.
Well, I did it yesterday. Thanks for the video though. Gave you a small XMR Tip a few days ago btw. Love your vids.
You motivated me to install nodes on both of my VPSes
I absolutely love your channel
Great instructional. I always imagined it would be a lot more complicated.
I will try to set up one in a LXC container on my little proxmox server (that is idling 24/7 anyway).
Thanks also for sharing the "control" program to see what is actually happening... I love the opportunity to contribute to a better TOR network.
an lxc tutorial would be cool! tried using it before but i find it hard to wrap my head around how it works
Opened up a relay after your last video. We need to construct additional relays
[Edit]
STATS :)
Took it offline shortly after the video to add an IPv6 address.
Tor's uptime is 1 day 18:00 hours, with 1635
circuits open.
I've sent 44.03 GB and received 43.47 GB.
I've received 23182 connections on IPv4 and 4404 on IPv6.
I've made 28631 connections with IPv4 and 8784 with IPv6.
any update?

@@bryanmuir362 still here, just been working. Will post some stats on the old node when I get a chance. Just opened up some new nodes in different countries to try to help spread out the bandwidth.
The new nodes have been running for 5 days each and have transferred an average of 32/gb up and down each and have been up for 5 days 22 hours since they first connected to the TOR Network.
Great job 🫡
Love these vids
Great video!
Just set up my first Relay! :-)
Excellent work
I was actually just looking into this. Planning on running one on an orangepi and spend the $5 a month for a digital ocean server.
I believe tor says not to use digital ocean if something else is available.
Still better to host it though, than nothing at all
I've been interested in Tor for a while and always wanted to set up a relay, but this video motivated me to finally sit down and get that done! Thank you!

By the way, tor sites had just been blocked in Russia, thanks a lot for your manual video
I'm one of the many that is curious about doing this from the previous video. Thanks for doing this. I had no idea tor was under attack.
I don't consume much media nowadays.
Thanks, man
I will do this later today!

I feel like you talk about something cool, and then actually learn how to, and then post a followup. But I love the vids either way.
might run one soon, cheers.
I'd run it within a container. That way, you will have the latest version regardless of distro.
@Наполовину идиот no Docker/Podman or something similar.
as someone who is studying programing your channel and some ordinary gamers are reallly doing a free service on relaying information and geting people on track about information, I love it. wish I could have some money to donate but I dont, and then again, it is "free"! you got me into programing, I willl study a little bit more and I just wanna say, thank you.
Just a comment to hack the algorithm
setting mine up now
I am definitely installing this on my VPS. It has plenty of speed and no bandwidth limit, so why not?
I'm planning to use one of my Raspberry Pi devices as one.
Mental Outlaw, I'm starting my first tor node, what distro do you recommend? I'm considering between Arch and Debian right now.
Thanks for this how too do. lets go nerds you have no reason not to... if you have a spare system kicking around that is.
Comment for the algorithm!
Oh heck yeah
sick
just made one myself! Thank you very much!
Wow, when I first heard about TOR I thought about how easy the attack described would be but I just assumed there are hundreds of thousands of devices on the network and that it would be too difficult. Now I'm hearing that 1000 relays are scary enough and that there are about 10.000 relays total? Shit...
Wouldn't it add a bit more security if it's run in podman (rootless docker alternative)?
If i had 4 relays going..would you put all the family keys into each file for each separate relay you are running..example would be running 4 individual rasp pi 4's
Just bought a pi 4 for this
Do I need to forward the port in my router as well?
has anyone made a docker container for Tor? i think it would be way easier if you can just deploy a container and do nothing
even running a guard node probably puts you on a list in some countries and because of that, i personally wouldn't.
epic comment for the algorithm
If I'm going to donate bandwidth to try to keep legitimate people safe(whistleblowers, dissidents, etc), knowing full well the vast majority of it is actually going to be used by pedophiles and druggies, you'd think they'd at least make it easy for me lmao
@@SkyenNovaA What's the planetary ratio of pedophiles to whistleblowers? I'd guess there's probably at least 100-200 pedophiles for every 1 whistleblower lol. I cant see them being a minority on the Tor network. Tor just isn't practical to use unless you absolutely have to.
Holy shit I haven't seen an Emiril reference in years
Do you need to open up port 9001 to the world? IE... port forward from your ISP router/gateway? Or is the link established as an outbound connection??
Yes, you need to have public IP. No incoming connections -> no relay.
Can you do a video on how to set up an xmpp server that runs only over tor
and/or how to get an tls certificate for your tor web address?
I feel like I’m gonna be put on an fbi watchlist
KAX17 will love this video
👌
Can you make a video about downloads on Tor? Downloads in general for maximum privacy.
gaming moment
Should I be concerned about NAT when setting up a tor relay?
You'll have to port forward (if you have a router at home which your PC goes through, for example). The configuration is different for each router so you'll have to search online how to do it for your specific router.
If you can accept incoming connections in some way, then no problems. If not, then you can't run relay.
Hey mental outlaw, youtube refuses to allow your videos to auto play for me. it only queues other videos, so you gotta keep up the good work man they are trying to silence you
Bing chilling
If I run a few of these, can I always use one of my own nodes as a first node in the chain? That sounds like a fairly good way to somewhat hide yourself from a KAT17 type of attack, unless I am missing something ofc.
Yes, you can, but, of course, you will need to change configs of your Tor clients.
If i would like do this for the purpose of diluting malicious nodes would that be a good idea to run multiple nodes in vms on the same machine?
This is what not said in this video. You need public IP. You can host only 2 nodes on the same IP. So no, it is not a good idea.
Lets make the graph go brrrrrrf. To the moon !!!!111!
I have a bunch of spare machines that can run relays and a bit of bandwith. Should I pop more relays with lower bandwith or less with higher one?
If you have one internet connection, then it is better to run one node. But watch for resource consumption on machine. If it becomes overloaded (CPU, RAM), then you may want to add second relay to split the load. As far as I know, to make more than 2 relays, you need more public IP addresses.
@@sdjhgfkshfswdfhskljh3360 I use internet agregation to have better speeds. I have slow one with public dynamic ip and faster one behind operator nat (dynamic not public ip).
Probably more with less bandwith? To dilute the bad ones more. I'm justn noob tho.
@@tnaxpw you need public IP to run node (or get ability to accept incoming connections in some way).
