Yeah, I wonder that from time to time about my group. Growing up, I was always the listener/"therapist" of the group; so much so that I went to college so to do marriage and child psychology/therapy.
We have a group chat with the 7 of us in it, and most of the time we just use that, even if it's a question for just one person. Still I try to make an effort every month or two to just send out individual texts to them all just to check in on life. It is to stay in contact, but to also get an idea on how they are with their mental health.
Like I said; unfortunately it's crossed my mind numerous times that if I didn't check in, or if I stopped replying to the main group, how long would it take for someone to notice? And would they reach out?

See I have a friendship with someone just like Cory and shawn. Although we don’t see each other more than maybe once a year now it’s always love with hugs and deep talks. We also have phone calls every couple of months to just check in. I feel for people who end up in these situations. I couldn’t imagine seeing my old best friend and we just shake hands, or I didn’t know they had a kid.

@@ca9404 there was a friend i was friends with for 30 years than in December we disagreed on politics he said covid was fake i said it was real and we had gotten over that, than his new wife stepped in and we were talking and that was brought up again and she said i'm ending this for good and i haven't spoken to him since. my point? he had moved away in (2004) and we've pretty much kept in contact through celly or e-mail since he moved away. now? i dunno if we are even friends anymore cause of stupid shit.

Exactly! I keep in contact with my good friends at least once every 2 weeks. We may not get to hang out since I've moved 2 hours away but it makes our few times of seeing each other that much meaningful. It's hard to "catch up" over a 5 year absence.

I love how even despite their separations and distance from each other, they all have that ONE teacher, Mr. Finney, that they still have that connection with. The one who affected their lives so much they couldn't NOT talk to him even after school, even if they stopped talked to each other.
Which was weird, since I don't remember Angela, Jack, or Rachel having more than 3 conversations with the guy.
And then girl meets world happened and Shawn marries…someone else. I wanted Shawn and Angela together more than I wanted Cory and Topanga together

Still she could’ve been written as his wife but that she travels a lot for work so that’s why she’s not always around. Also they could’ve had scenes with him texting and calling her. It wouldn’t have been that hard to keep such a good relationship for the two of them. They easily made Angela’s husband existing yet not existing. They just wanted some very bland relationship for Shawn and it’s a slap in the face that Angela encouraged it because of the writers. She became the one that got away.
I really like how much “room to breathe” there is in this show. They don’t beat the audience over the head. The pace is good and way slower than so many shows that came after it. It’s amazing how from the 2000’s onward, the pace of entertainment got faster and faster. This show really allows the audience to get to know each and every character. And they make a point to value every character.
You're right. Boy Meets World really leaned into the writing and gave people reasons/time to reflect. It had time to tell stories and it used that well.

I'm so grateful for my best friend. We grew up together, roomed together at college, we both stood in each other's wedding, and now we live 10 minutes down the road from each other. She has a 1 year old and I have one on the way. This year marks 20 years of friendship.

Its kind of surreal how close to this Girl Meets World ended up being. Shawn being the lonely drifter journalist, Topanga being a powerhouse lawyer, Jack got a job that made him a bad guy (even if he didn't think of himself as one), Shawn and Cory rarely spoke or spent time together, and no one had correspondence with Angela even in the age of information.
And then there was Eric...
Unprecedented connection of sound and video, instantaneous connection from almost anywhere in the world, and people who loved each other just stopped talking, thinking 'well they didn't call me either'.
Except her name being Beverly…
How is it surreal? You say that as if this scene predicted the future. Clearly the *writers* used it as inspiration for where to pick up.

This episode is one of my all time faves. It’s pretty realistic when you think of how adult relationships change after college/high school. When everyone goes their separate ways and morphs into their own ppl, it can be hard to keep in touch and easy to isolate yourself. Also, I hate that the writers never made Shawn and Angela end game. I really think they could’ve done something there, even in girl meets world, I would’ve preferred some development with them over Shawn and Maya’s mom.

All my high school friends stabbed me in my back. I’ve seen a few around randomly out shopping or on my way to work years apart and it’s so weird when they act so happy to see me. One girl I was really cool with even asked that I hang out with her one day, of course I never went. It’s just too weird to rekindle something that was broken

Answer - Life. You want to, you mean to, you think about it, but other things get in the way. School is often what brings you together, after graduation, school isn't there anymore. Plans of getting together over the summer give way to having summer jobs at different places. You go to college, at different schools, in different parts of the state. Time goes on. One day, 5 or 6 years later, you're walking through a store or something and you see your best friend from then. The conversation goes like:
"High School Best Freind's Name?"
"Your Name?"
"How are you?"
"I'm good. You?"
"I'm doing ok. Working for X, up for a promotion. How about you?"
Someone walks up, "Honey, who's this?"
"This is ________, we went to school together. ______________ this is my husband/wife."
"YOU'RE MARRIED?!"
"Yeah, expecting our first child in 6 months."
"Congratulations, it's great to see you. We should get together sometime."
"Great to see you too. We should do that."
Conversation lasts less than 5 minutes. And you don't get together.

Spot on especially the last line. We should get together sometime, yeah that would be great let’s do that aaaaannnnnd it rarely ever happens because schedule wise it just doesn’t work unless you both make it work and once you hear well maybe next time the possibility gets even lower to the point you just move on until the next chance encounter which may happen years from now or never at all.
Might be this way for the older generations but my generation is so interconnected through social media that everyone who’s ever mattered to us in our adolescence is going to stay in the loop whether they want to or not
Not to mention that quite often you and your onetime pals change+ become folks that neither of you have anything in common any more- and don't wanna hang with after spouting off old memories.

Since Cory and Shawn knew each other since kindergarten, I don't buy that they would drift apart like this. I'd understand if they just hanged out a few years in high school, but they literally grew up together as brothers.
I’ve known my best friend since kindergarten still talk to him on a weekly to near daily basis. Nearly a 3 decade long friendship.
Trust me I got one of my boys who I’ve known since infant see him as my brother haven’t seen him in 2 years and we haven’t spoken in like a year

I feel this on a deep level. Had a great friend from 5th all the way through high school. Even sat next to me at graduation (close last names) and I haven’t spoken to her since a few months after grad. That was over 10 years ago. Hope she doing good in life and is happy.

Watching this as a kid, it was just a future sequence from a show. Watching it as an adult with a wife and kids, with buddies I haven’t seen in how long… hits differently.

Real friends will stay in touch. Some people you meet along the way they are cool and all that. Then for whatever reason you don't share the same building with them and you are the only one reaching out to say hi. It's over and its not bad guess is just nature

Idk it was nice but I don’t like the idea of people being describe as miserable, bitter, sad, lonely or unhappy because they don’t have a partner. I don’t like the narrative that single people aren’t truly happy if they don’t have someone. Sure having a lifelong partner, someone you live next to you is a beautiful thing but not always. Being happy w/ yourself, loving life, sharing it w/ people you love or people you meet along the way is also very much beautiful. I’m single, working in a job I love, surrounded by friends and family, having the time of my life and I am happy. It took a while bc being fed that “you must get married or have a partner to be happy” line all my childhood, I was convinced that I need and want that. Now it’s just a weird concept that your happiness depends on someone else instead of yourself.
I graduated HS 12 years ago and College 8. It’s so surreal how true this scene is. These days the most I “speak” to them is a like on a Facebook update.

My 35 Year HS Reunion is this year. There was no social media when I graduated. When you lost touch, you lost touch. It was amazing how fast it happened. I would run into people on occasion but didn't really see anyone until the 10 Year Reunion. At least today, you can keep up a little. Send them a Congratulations on a wedding, baby, etc.

They WERE friends. The problem I'm seeing in this comment section is that people think friendship is supposed to last forever. They could, but they don't have to. Friendships that span a portion of your lives are still worthwhile. But people experience sadness when they realize not everything is permanent, so they want to latch onto the idea that friendships must continue forever. But they don't. And that's OK. It's better to reflect on the experience than to suffer with the illusion that it's supposed to last forever.

I grew up relating to Shawn. Now I live alone, create art, and have moved as soon as my lease is up every year since turning 18. This clip of his life and relationships is even more relatable.

The thing about most high school relationships is they're based on proximity. You become friends with whoever's there that you can stand the most. So it makes sense that when you grow up and meet new people and have new experiences (and options), those early friendships often fade.
But sometimes you find a real kindred spirit even in school. I met my best friend when we were 8 years old on a 4-H field trip. We're still best friends to this day, well into our 30s. I think this never landed as realistic for me because Shawn and Cory were so clearly more than proximity friends. Their friendship in adulthood would have changed with them, but it wouldn't have just fizzled out. Glad they showed that to be true in Girl Meets World.
Same thing with romance. This is why so many end up hating their spouse. We have to explore more.
Most relationships in life are based on proximity genius.
Remember, Corey + Topanga go to New York in like 10 episodes. The group all leaves anyway. If Coreys in New York, who is pulling Shawn by the ear to New York to fix this fight?
Angela and Rachel are roommates. It's not like either of them knew anyone else in town they could live with. So its weird that they didn't at least patch things up. Jack at least had enough money to move out though.
Thats because this show isnt real or based on real characters? Lol in real life shawn and cory would have gotten houses next to each other or have jobs in the same building. Literally during that time of the show they were still teenagers trying to portray them as adults. People fall out of high school friendships mainly due to location differences. If you have been best friends since kindergarten you would find it harder to separate even parents know this.
@@Unbothered92 The friends I had from Kindergarden, only one of them lasted as long as my highschool friendships. I'm not still in contact with any of them.
Though, considering what we saw in GMW, i'm kind of surprised Shawn even had his own house. He travels around the world all the time, makes more sense that he'd have lived in the apartment above Corey + Topanga's garage. Shawn never gave the impression he wanted to settle down and the place he chose was far from everyone. That's more of a vacation cabin he should have had.
Such is life. I’m in my 30’s and I look at people as just in the moment. People from childhood, teen years, young adult years, and people at various jobs I had were just people in the moment. We’re all just here interacting and providing knowledge to one another, then when you’ve moved on with your life, you realize they were a thing in the past. I’ve met thousands of people in my life so far and I only know about a good 3.
So glad I got to grow up with this show and these characters, really taught us a lot of lessons that we would need through the years! Even though at the time we didn’t realize it

Man this scene feels heavy... Honestly there's only a couple of people from high school that I talk to semi-consistently. There's people that I miss even a few who've passed away, but to be honest I hated high school a lot and got bullied relentlessly.

Always was fan of this show it was a comedy , but definitely dealt with real life experiences and events.

Love how Sean is drinking wine in this episode when they literally had a whole episode about how alcoholism runs in their family and Sean can't drink without problems forming.
I thought about that but he's drinking something different than Cory who for sure got alcohol so there's a chance Shawn's not drinking alcohol.

Thats just how reality is. People move on and live their own lives. I had a best friend(his words) back in the late 2000s. We weren't friends in high school but started hanging out 3 years after. We did everything together. After he finished university, he found a girlfriend that would eventually become his wife. He went from brother from another mother to stranger overnight. As sad as I was, I had to eventually realize that I'm a loner and move on with my life. I only heard 11 years later from someone else that they got married and had kids. I'm happy for the guy. Life goes on for everyone else even when yours doesn't. Make the best of what you have and move on with it.

They're basically brothers. I don't think it's realistic that they'd stop talking to each other for years, let alone to stop being on a first name basis.

It's a true storyline. Some of the closest friends I had in high school and growing up, we haven't spoken on any level for over 25 years. Sad, but that's life.

My blood literally boils when people say "why haven't you called?" I was the one that called for years it was one sided and it got old. Last I checked phones work both ways.

my cousin who was mines and my brothers fave cousin showed me how people can change up on you out of nowhere...we used to have real good times as kids and teenagers the times we got to spend together...even in our early 20s, then about 5 years ago he stopped coming around...we no longer know about him or talk to him at all, only find out how he is doing every now and then from my mom telling us because his mom still talks to my mom. People you think are good friends will change on you from one day to another so dont ever get too comfortable with any relationship.
I can honestly say I regret a lot from my childhood , one being friends with certain people. Sadly I chased friends like this growing up but today I have one that is like a brother

Most of us can relate to your story. I’ve tried meeting up with old friends and we were both in a much different headspace - our hobbies did not mesh at all anymore. That same feeling where you can finish each others sentence and hang out all day long doing anything(and still enjoy it) is just not there. They are still fine people but that special bond is just gone and it can’t be recaptured with our current personalities and lives

Feeling very grateful for my friends right now. It’s been 20 years since high school, and I’m still in contact with the majority of the friends I made during that time in my life. I am very aware that isn’t the norm … So I’m grateful.
You are very blessed. That is a rare thing to have for sure. The reality for most people, sad as it seems, it seems to be what happened to Shawn.
Staying friends with High School mates is unrealistic. I have friends now that share my interests and some even show me some new ones. It is hard making new friends, but when you do (as a grow up) it's is really nice.

It's incredible how well this show evolved from being the kind of humor to draw in kids, ending with a valuable lesson to be learned.
And then it slowly progressed into adult heavy life moments without any real answer or lesson. Just relatability.

The weirdest thing about this show was Corey and Tapanga always reminded me of a couple I once considered friends going back to high school. Same mannerisms and how they talked the same way. I was basically like Shawn.
Nothing wrong with that. He might be the most authentic guy in the show.
I was the friend who tried to keep old high school friendships alive, but after always sending texts or making calls but never receiving them, I quickly gave up and realized there is no point trying to keep something alive that only goes 1 way. As I aged and got busy with my own life, it became less important to have relationships with people who didn’t want one with me.
To make it worse, sometimes they had a change of heart but at that point I also moved on so it just became impossible to rekindle that spark and connection we shared as kids

What's even worse now is that we now have social media sites like Facebook where we add each other as "friends" or had them as "friends" already before graduating/leaving school, yet we still don't reach out to each other. We just lurk and inform others about how they're doing, either for gossip or genuine care. Communication has reached it's sunken place more than ever.
I’m glad they didn’t try to fake it. It was awkward and that’s ok too.

Everyone drifts apart after school is over.
In my experience well when I graduated from high school everyone was basically dead to me and no one clapped for me when I walk across that stage.
Never truly got close to anyone as at that time I was learning something. I learn to spend time with people at least once because you may never see them again. I’ve had plenty of people I got along with and eventually went our separate ways. I guess that’s life lesson to life in the moment while people are in your life when times good, bad or something else. At least you’ll have the time spent together and not wasted. However, for me those were rare occasions. Ones I will no longer take for granted.
This scene is a reality when you get older.

Funny this came up on my feed. I bumped into someone yesterday I haven’t seen since high school. Close to 25 years ago. I realised life just reframes itself. They are settled down and married with kids. I’ve only just recently stopped working abroad. I’m not who I was yesterday let alone high school. It’s memories and common experiences that bind us they are sometimes not enough.
This episode is so relatable because that is what live as an adult is like.
