I am of Maori decent, well done girls, beautiful harmonies, lovely smile, and alway proud to see others learn and enjoy our culture. Thank you for giving this old time favourite a go.
Wi Huata wrote this song and taught it to his children whilst on a family gathering to Lake Tutira, north of Napier. He was explaing how the iwi came together here to support each other. Later he used this song to promote Moral Re-armament, uniting different cultures. This was a fantastic example of what he wrote in the song, with another culture performing this piece (to a very high standard, I might add) and what a great rendition they did Me te mihi nui, Kia Ora - With appreciation, Thank you
Congrats I liked it. Stunning voices and very beautiful presentation. Canon Wiremu (Wi) Te Tau Huata, MC, QSO, CBE (1917 - 1991) would have been proud you chose his waiata. Wi was known for singing Italian songs during 2nd World War which would have opened him to new avenues of music he would otherwise not have experienced. For anyone (other than the Wi Huata descendents) who think they own this Waiata and it's presentation. Let me tell you now, you don't. Well done - rangimarie (peaceout)
love your harmonies, ignore any of those negative comments that have been posted by what sounds like racists. They should be proud that people of other cultures want to learn our waitata. I even saw students from Japan performing this song. It was great. Us Maori our known for our great harmonies, and sometimes, some of us, just can't get the harmonies right. You guys did it perfectly :)
Nicely done ladies. :) I did get a little fright at the beginning, it just wasn't what I expected. I'm glad that I was pleasantly surprised. Beautiful smiles, beautiful voices. Yes you picky buggers, the pronunciation was a "tad" off, well BOOHOO! I have whanau that stink at speaking Te Reo, no-one looks at them sideways... just cause we brown don't mean that we have to go tramping over everyone that makes an effort to share our culture. Those of you who want to complain about it, I'd very much like to see you do better. o.O
Well done !! Girls thank you for liking our Maori language and doing your best Kia ora!!. And pay no mind to those Maori small minded-ness. It does not belong in the 21st centry again Kia ora!!! cheers!!!
KA PAI!!!!!That was awesome!..forget what the jealous and the rascist hori's say..in 2012 who cares! I can say this because I'm a proud MOARI and I can say what ever and who ever I want to..well done girls, Arohanui :)
E kī! Mēnā kārekau he maramatanga, kua oti ngā āhuatanga katoa! E ai ki ngā tōhungu taumata o ngā waiata māori, o ngā haka māori. Me ūmere tō mātou taonga, tō mātou nei taonga tuku iho i ngā mana, i ngā tōtohu o ngā hākui, hākoro mā! He aukati tēra mēnā ka mahi e ngoikore ana ngā maramatanga, ngākore ngā āhuatanga katoa! For your information person above. I know I was brought knowing not to do anything without full knowledge of whats what. If you do otherwise, you are causing an injustice.
Aspirating the “t’s” for lots of languages that don’t do that. Like Māori. Typical of a choir that is mainly Anglophonic, which aspirated the “t”, “k”, and “p” while speaking on a regular basis.
sorry but i just dont get it! this song or any maori song, it isnt opera, you sing with your heart! maori songs have meaning so you treat them with respect not turn it into a opera song
Russell, if you look closer, many aren't Pakeha. I am Pakeha,( with about 6 other cultures in me), but was surprised they chose this song. Maybe they relate to your beautiful culture and this beautiful song? Maybe like us all enjoying and singing Bob Marley's songs? Sorry if you are offended- me too a little bit, because I don't understand the full impact this has on you. I am currently trying to integrate Maori Tikanga into my classroom, as we now have to teach and speak maori. I have 14 different cultures in my classroom, but my focus is on teaching them something of the Maori culture in the best way I know how.
Oh and another thing some of these sooo called Maoris on here, if they want to complain they have to learn how to spell first..probably can't speak the reo as well..haha
Grossly not Maori in any except for the kupu, but can see that a lot of effort is going in to this performance. It is very much a westernised version and would like to know who taught it and what permissions were sought. Pronounciation is insulting along with the actions but this is something that is becoming more common with the use of the haka around the world. I do note though that there is no intentional disrespect going on.
Thinking of something nice to say, the girls would've sounded so awesome on a Pakeha song. The teacher really stuffed up, teach a song you know and can pronounce, is all I can say politely .
At least they made an effort to learn part of another culture! Be Careful your negativity will eventually destroy everything around you that is beautiful...

Lucky you, you don’t even care if how the choir is pronouncing the “t” is different than how it really is pronounced in Māori.

THIS IS A DISCRASE TO ME BECAUSE I AM A REAL MOARI AND TO ME IT FEELS WRONGS FOR PAKEHA TO SING IT LIKE THAT
Serious discrase, you are right:_)
Because the way that Tutura Mai is sung sounds kind of like a jazz tune.

Hard out! If your going to perform a maori song then at least do it properly! they did turn it into an opera song...
Thinking of something nice to say, the girls would've sounded so awesome on a Pakeha song.
