  • Steve reveals what makes original issue JoHan “flat box” replicas of the Ramchargers 1964 Dodge and Golden Commandos 1964 Plymouth Belvedere so different from later reissues of these kits. Plus a look at Lindberg’s more recent 1964 Ramchargers Dodge 330 Race Hemi sedan model kit.

    The thing about models and their colors in the late 60's and then the 70's was that people at the time liked color bodies because very few kids painted the cars with spray paint. If it was painted at all it was with a brush and regular bottles paint. I remember me and my friends would talk about how happy we were if the car was NOT white. Now today everyone paints the models, so the color is better white. But if I buy a vintage model, I prefer the colored bodies but will buy a white one if I need that one to fill in my collection. Great vids while the weather sucks.

    This is my problem with Round 2, they keep repopping the same kits just with new decals. There are so many kits that need to be brought back.

    • @RLRSwanson
      @RLRSwanson Před 2 lety

      It does get tiresome, however in their defense Round2 does also fix problems on SOME of the old kits and they are getting around to releasing some interesting old kits as well, such as the AMT 60s Lotus Indycar kits and the like.
      The issues I have with Round2 are first the kits they've released without fixing anything, which despite the good quality plastic, nice tires and good looking decals are terrible. Second is the re-popping of kits as different brands without any indication on the box art or wherever. I can understand the thinking behind releasing a kit under a brand that is widely known like AMT, but they'd probably sell even more if the people who remember the original Lindberg 64 Belvedere or whatever and haven't heard of scalemates could get the info on the box art or something that the "new" AMT kit is the same thing.

    • @SteveMagnante
      @SteveMagnante  Před 2 lety +3

      I understand your point. But lets remember that Round 2 is a BUSINESS and today's profits become tomorrows new kit investments. Yes, ther eis a fine line but I think Round 2 is walking it very well. But yes, with luck and hope, they'll really step out and CLONE some vintage JoHan kits. If anybody can, its Round 2 (then again Revell-Monogram did it with the Rommel's Rod revival about 10 years ago). Lets keep our hopes up! -Steve Magnante

    • @RLRSwanson
      @RLRSwanson Před 2 lety +2

      @@SteveMagnante Yes, they've got a business to run and overall they're doing a good job in my view. We also have to remember that if companies like Round2 weren't around, who knows if those new releases of old AMT/MPC/Lindberg kits would even be a thing and the molds suffered a similar fate to JoHan, scrap or train accidents...Even though now I'm much more careful about which new MPC and AMT kits I buy, even the turds build into nice looking models. It might take an infuriating amount of fixing, but at least with the ones I've done, the plastic is very good quality and the parts are straight. And it's not like Revell Germany and especially Italeri haven't repopped many things over the years that maybe should've been left be :)
      Speaking of Revell USA, along with the Rommel's Rod, they've been doing a pretty good job of bringing back their old stuff. There's definitely hope, because I think there's so much interest among people who want to build the good JoHan, Revell, Monogram and AMT kits and not just collect them, that there's got to be a big enough potential market to do it.

    Regarding the 3-D digital scan of the Rommel's Rod. I have an early Monogram kit that has never been opened that would be a good candidate for the same procedure.
    If any one remembers the Dragon Wagon / Circus Wagon show rod. It was the one that had the dragon, in a cage, on the back of the vehicle. What makes this kit unique
    is the fact that after this kit was manufactured, Monogram re-tooled the molds to create the Hangman kit. Dragon Wagon was then, never produced again. If one of these
    new manufacturing companies decides to try to recreate this kit - I might be willing to also, let them borrow my original to do a new 3-D tooling.

    Round2 recently released a 1/25 kit of an International Transtar Tractor that was 3D scanned from a survivor kit and retooled with modern advancements. They could do it with Jo-Han kits (relatively) easily if they obtained the rights from Okey Spaulding.
    They could even modify tooling from their existing kits to provide more detailed chassis and engines to the often perfectly dimensioned Jo-Han bodies.
    With the prices of glue bomb rebuilders approaching what a factory sealed kits went for five years ago, the market for reanimated Jo-Han kits is a no brainer for a company like Round2…they have the experience, license-acquisition know how, and a fan base of consumers impressed enough by their existing product offerings to follow them down ANY modeling rabbit hole.

    Steve are you aware of the original 1964 Dodge and Plymouth kits (hardtops and convertibles) that had the original Fury / Polara side trim moldings and the 426 wedge engine with the incredible exhaust manifolds. In mid year they offered the kits with different art work and the Hemi motor. And there were also 99 cent kits that only had the stock parts. And the promos of these cars had the regular and correct split bench seats instead of the buckets and console in the kits. All of the reissues had the side moldings removed and no wedge motor.

    • @SteveMagnante
      @SteveMagnante  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi GQJOHNNY, Yes, I've seen those fantastic JoHan Tri-Y Max Wedge exhaust manifolds. I have ONE set of them I got back in the 1980's from a friend's parts box and I'm waiting for the right project car kit to use them on. Funny thing, as you state, JoHan obviously felt it was important to be "up to the minute" with kit accuracy (in some areas anyway) and - again, as you mentioned - the 1964 Dodge "Cotton Owens" Dodge stock car kit had engine call out decals that read 385 hp (wedge) and 425 hp (Hemi). I have seen exactly TOW sets of those beautifully intricate Tri-Y Max Wedge exhaust manifolds, one on a Red1964 Dodge at the Carlisle Factory Super Stock Invitational (that used to be held in the old "car dealership" building and the other set sitting loose in the swap meet. Funny thing, the Tri-Y exhaust manifold on the passenger side forced a NEW INNER FENDER STAMPING!!! Just below the hood hings is a flattened area about 7-inches long and 3 inches wide. It is definately NOT hammer work but rather a true stamped item. I can't imagine Dodge / Plymouth tooled up a specific Tri-Y inner fender panel for the (perhaps) 25 to 100 cars built before the 426 Race Hemi took over in late 1964. I've since made it a point to inspect every 1964 Dodge / Plymouith I've seen for a similar flattened region under the passenger-side hood hinge....but have not yet seen another. The Mystery Continues.... THANKS for writing and watching, Steve Magnante

    I had an original release Ramcharger"s Dodge. The stripe decals were ridiculously hard to apply and I made a mess of them. They covered the entire roof and trunk and were just too much limp sticky film to position correctly. They had to be perfectly straight to look right and just a little crookedness or kink would ruin the effect and make the whole thing look like shit. They were also rather thick and didn't lay down cleanly. I can still feel my frustration 50 years later.

      Hi Cycolac fan, I'm the same way with the number 426. When my change at the supermarket is $4.26 I notice it. I also dig it when I notice the clock and it reads 4:26 (usually p.m., I'm typically sleeping in the a.m.). They call this "totem-ism" I say its fun and somehow meaningful. Even if its not, I appreciate it when "the Hemi gods" send us these little surprises! THANKS for watching, Steve Magnante

    What is the original price for those kits?

    • @SteveMagnante

      They were $1.98 for these dual-build 1964 Dodge and Plymouth kits. I think its fair to pay $100 or more for these relics.

      Stu, weren't you an early Beatle? Just kidding. IMC was one of the smaller model kit makers but did some excellent kits including your Mustang II Show Car and others like the Dodge Little Red Wagon. Your Mustang II kit has been re-released over the years but is still an easy $75 to $150 kit today at the Model Car Swap Meet or on eBay. THANKS for writing, Steve Magnante

    So do you think I could start a channel where I either ask for live donations to NOT build a super rare kit that I buy, that it might make money to buy more kits that I not make. And then every once in a while, I have donations sent in to vote for a model out of say 16, narrowed to 8, narrowed to 4, then 2 then one and then I actually build that model from super rare kits, do you think that would be supported or just drive you guys nuts?

      Hi Shawn, I like your idea. I've had similar (but more deranged) ideas about staging demolition derbies between say, a Hemi 'Cuda and an LS6 Chevelle. Insanity! But I hate to say it, I bet such a hairbrained scheme would go viral. Can you imagine it? "Today on the Shawn Nlrman CZcams Channel its TRANS AM Wars! Watch as this 1967 Camaro Z/28 goes head-to-head with this pristine Mustang Boss 302..." Then have the cars proceed to engage in a fender bending, glass smashing fight to the death in a sand ring. Ouch! Insane yes, but perhaps The Next Big Thing? I hope not.....

    Even though Jo Han was very innovated with their kits the flat box design was a bust. The intention was better, efficient stacking of product for shipping and displaying but the center of the box was easily pushed in and the contents got damaged. Often you opened the box and found the roof crushed and broken A pillars, convertibles in particular. And tires laying against the glass pieces and decal sheets and damaging them. Jo Han was always slow in recognizing these problems and correcting them. Go back to the regular box design. And the promos made from the bad plastic material that warped so badly. Why so many years to switch to the better plastic?

      Hi RayThackSton, I understand your point, but please try to remember that there are folks who spend millions on paintings, hundreds of thousands on coins and hundreds of bucks on comic books. I guess there's an "ass for every seat". My hope is that Round 2 or somebody will RE-RELEASE / CLONE these vintage JoHan kits so the SCALPER, SHARK, OPPORTUNIST kit dealers can go pound sand. But I digress. On second thought, these folks certainly have every right to keep their precious JoHan goodies unless somebody pays up enough coin to let them go. I get it, its the old supply / demand cycle. Anyhoo, THANKS for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

      The same thought process would make you question why a 1970 Hemi'Cuda that sold brand new in 1970 for $4000 is now worth millions of dollars. Supply and demand, my friend. Back in 1990 or so, I was desperate to buy a plastic model of a 1971 Dodge Demon 340 but I couldn't find one anywhere. They hadn't been current for over a decade and they'd yet to be rereleased, and remember these were the days before ebay and the internet were a thing so finding obscure stuff was next to impossible. It turned out that a friend of mine had a built Demon kit but didn't want to sell it, until I offered him $100 for it. He couldn't take my money fast enough and sold it to me on the spot. $100 was crazy money for a 1/25 kit back then but I had to have it since I had a 1:1 Demon 340. Something is only worth what someone will pay for it, high or low, and that Demon model was worth $100 to me that day. 👍
