I think the slow start without the Predator was necessary. The movie had to establish the credentials of the team as ultimate badasses and the bonds between them. They destroy the Guerrilla camp with impunity, they are human predators. But then the hunters become the hunted in an increasingly desperate struggle.
There is also foreshadowing of their difficulties. Harper's team was likely taken out by the Predator, given their grizzly death and the way they shot in all directions, hitting nothing.
The slow pacing at the beginning yields a lot of dividends over the course of the movie.

Billy was a native american. They are expert trackers if brought up I'm ancient ways. That's also why he kept sensing it. Right or wrong, there's a mysticism attached to the native and their senses acute. This also played into Billy's dropping of guns and just have his knife to face the predator. It's a warrior mentality.

Thanks for the representation. Also, their was a study done back I believe WW2 with native soldiers. They knew that natives had great prowess in tracking and hunting that they couldn't crack the code of. So they tried to push natives to help them. By training and putting them against other normal soldiers. They did about the same. And the native experts on these areas said, "okay, so don't treat them like normal soldiers. Train them however you want but let them keep their hair. Our hair is what helps us be such formitable trackers and hunters" so they took ten natives, cut five of their hair off, and the other five they let them keep. The native with hair cut were caught within a day, after five days in the wilderness, they only caught one long haired native after like the fourth day. And billys hair is long.

We also cut our chest because in our culture it means, I show no fear. The cutting of the flesh also releases endorphrines and adrenaline into the human body, especially across the chest because the body wants to protect the core where all your organs are. So your body reacts more aggressively, which makes you more aggressive. You cut you hand for a pact. You cut your chest for war.

The first quater of the movie is introducing the characters on their "original mission" to free some hostages. During the fight in the camp, the Predator watches them and made Dutch his main target. Then he takes his buddies down to isolate him and finally want to defeat him in an honorful fight. That's the mentality of the Predator species, hunting for honor and trophies.
BTW, we see 2 later govenors in this testosterone flooded movie: obviously Arnold and Jesse "The Body" Ventura, at that time professional wrestler and later govenor of MInnesota.
Predator 2 is also pretty good, featuring Danny Glover and the one and only Bill Paxton, who is offically the only person fighting a Terminator, Xenomorphs and a Predator.😉

    @ZannNewman Před rokem +2

The film does a great job of 'show don't tell' - the first part establishes the heroes as BADASS, then the second part has them picked off with ease, showing the Predator as MORE badass, then the reversal where Arnie faces it, looses a fair fight and wins by cunning and luck. It hunts with an idea of honour, matching weapon to weapon and taking trophies from those that fight well. It's like a Trophy Hunter with camouflage, night sights and a rifle stalking a lion, the beast thinks its king but it's totally outclassed. The Predator doesn't talk directly, it seems the suit it wears has a translator that picks up peoples voices so it can mimic them (like hunters with a bird call) so at the end it was laughing at being beaten by a primitive with a log and the translator used Billy's laugh. One idea I've seen mentioned is Billy faced the Predator on the log to buy the others time and to get an honourable death - with no guns so it would use a blade, no trees overhead so it can't go round and he cut himself so it can't claim first blood.

Oh man, you need the 'hostages' story at the start to build up the bonds between the men in the team, so you really feel for them as the Predator tears the team apart. Some of the later films don't work because we don't care about the people being killed.
I'm amazed you're surprised that a film from the 80s could be beautifully shot. They knew their stuff back then, didn't have CGI to rely on.

Billy's super badass tracking ability is basically just him being good at making observations. example- the footprints telling him where the soldiers came from and what type they are is as basic as looking at the treads and direction the footprints are in, if they're all military issued, they've all got the exact same tread. As far as the 'Firefight shooting in all directions.' bit, well, bullet holes are still visible in the jungle. Hard to find and all, but that'd basically tell you all you need to make that statment.

Based on the era and the age of the characters, these guys were mostly special forces in Cambodia in the mid 70s. The actors and writer and others on the crew were real ex military and were able to conduct realistic movements for the film. The environment itself is south America which is sort of why Billy is so at home, although his tracking skills are a bit hyperbolized. To figure out the six men in boots thing would require a good half hour of sniffing and examining the ground to deduce that. If all six had different boot sizes it would have been easier but two or three guys with a size 10 would mean finding side by side tracks to compare the indents for gait. Like I said, a good half hour time cut there.
Tropic thunder definitely took from this, as have most movies set in Vietnam even though again it's set in South America and filmed in Hawaii or something. And this film also borrows a bit from Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now.

The creature was redesigned bassed on the voice actors work. He had hurt his throat and couldnt do the usual roaring for the audidition so he performed the chittering clicking sounds that led to the crustation insectile thing we got.
As to movies suggetions you cant go wrong with Arsenic and old Lace. Its an oldie, a goldie and no need for you to censor it to make it CZcams safe. It also famously doenst have Boris Karlov as they couldnt get him off of the stage show to film it.

Ok, so… The reason the film was set up like it was (imo) was to establish that these guys were going in for a specific mission, but they find out that was a ruse. In any other movie, there would probably be some other special ops stuff, because Arnold!
The movie had to set up that nobody had any idea what was coming for them.
That and “GET TO THE CHOPPER!” are why I love this movie!

Also, entry wounds tend to be much less damaging then exits wounds. So the plasma caster entered as a point, and when it existed the back of macks head it created one heck of an exit wound. Difference in piercing and breaking. Also if your wondering about the power of the plasma caster. It can charge. So when he hit Dutch, he used a single non charged shot. Like the one he used to kill poncho and mack. Through the head. The one he used on Dylan, or Apollo Creed, he used a charged shot to take out his arm. The predator is such a cool alien monster, and such a classic. Glad you enjoyed it!

    • They then proceed to show how good this group is at killing people
They want to set them up as good guys that are good at killing to show how good the predator is at killing and that it kills for fun/sport.

Probably one of the most badass sci-fi action movies of all time. That much bad assness hasn't been seen on screen for a long time. Aliens would be about the closest one to it in terms of overall tone. 2 eh... could have been with that cast, but wasn't. Alien vs. Predator 1: without the R rated violence it didn't feel like its parent movies. AVP 2: fixed the action but suffered on plot. Predators was a nice sequel IMO. Predator 4: Eh..not bad but not right either...I didn't dislike it. Prey (aka Predator 5): not bad and a cool way to tell the story involving "natives" and their "tech" to go against a Predator. My favorite scene is the mowing the grass with the mini-gun!

My interpretation about Dutch sitting in the mud was that he had given up and braced himself in the branches with the anticipation of a painful death. But he quickly realized that the predator could not see him and wisely stayed still. It wasn’t until after the predator left that he scooped some mud off himself and realized it had somehow rendered him invisible.

Like Demolition Man calling out his 'presidential library' before he even got into politics.

I think the reason why the beginning of the movie seems different is because they were retooling the movie as they went along. For instance, the first guy to get killed, Hawkins, is played by Shane Black who is a writer they brought in to do rewrites on the script while they were filming. So they killed his character off first so he could focus more script revisions.

Each member of Dutch's team has a specific specialty, Billy is an American Indian, he's a tracker. The predator hunts for sport, looking for the strongest prey, he keeps their skulls as trophies! People always say this movie is longer as it has to be but remember this was in the 80's and this movie was kinda selfaware. The wohle point of the first Part is to set up your typical 80's action heros. GI Joe Musclemen who are the best of the best, near invincible like it was the trend back than. When the audience thinks they know what this movie is, because they have seen things like this more than enough you go swooosh and bring that Monster in.
Today it seems unnecessary but i gues back it was the best option to have that long start to suprise everybody in the middle.

Where yes they did overdo it in the movie. For sure. But the shooting into the forest is a real tactics used in the military. When you're part of a unit you have to trust your squadmates. So if you hear someone screaming your rank and shooting. You trust their level of need and look where they are shooting. And just start shooting. It's a strategy of suppression by overcoming an ambush like circumstance by superior firepower. I remember when I was going through my training. I was chosen by my staff sergeant to lead an incursion on our own people as a training exercise in the middle of the night. I was not more then six feet away from a battle hole with two people in it. I had five people with me. And one of them stepped on a freaking stick. And he said the security question
Example:where you traveling? To the north.
Keywords: traveling in question; the word north in any kind of response.
And I just put my fist up telling my men to hold. They did. And I swear just like a video game, ten fifteen seconds pasted and he said like an fning skyrim guard, "huh, musta been nothing."

Great way to put it! This is a classic testosterone-fueled action ride, for sure. Just makes you want to go to the gym afterwards. Great suspense too. And I think Arnie's acting is really underrated, along with those perfect one-liners. The rest of the cast/characters were great, and the plot makes enough sense to hold your attention. Much like Aliens, this is a classic re-watch for me that never gets old.
Predator 2's a bit more campy, but for the purposes of nostalgia, I have to recommend it. I actually caught it before the first one on TV as a kid. Objectively, it's not as good as Predator, but Gary Busey and Danny Glover make it worth a watch. And seeing the creature hunt in the "concrete jungle" is pretty cool too.
