Every time someone shows how long it takes to set up a tent, no one ever stakes it down. In my opinion the tent isn’t done till it’s staked.
I never stake, cause California
And rain fly.
@@OverlandBound what does that mean? I don't understand the not staking either. I'm in Australia and there's no way we'd get away with not staking our tent. We had 61km per hour winds come out of no where and if we hadn't taken the time to stake it all out our gear would be in Perth now. (Opposite side of the country haha)
@@MsS-J it means we don’t have severe winds like you do
I'm never in a rush to set up camp. Granted, I'm retired and not a full timer but I try to plan my stops so I have plenty of time. I also camp out of the back of my pickup so there is less to do. I think the more often you do it the quicker it becomes as you figure out your process. But I actually find set up relaxing and I am in fact, in the outdoors while I do it. Once I'm set up I'm going to sit around for a while anyway so what's the rush? Slow down and enjoy it!
Agreed.... I take aout 20 leisure minutes, to build/fold camp... i like to take it all in , in the process
Couldn’t have said it any better 👍
I fully concur-when things are good-but there are times when the ambient conditions are not so favorable. At times of high winds, heavy rain or snow, arriving into camp very late on a moonless night, even huge numbers of bees swarming over all your equipment, on your pets and into your vehicle ( really happened the last I was on the Mojave Trail) the ability to very quickly set up camp can make a great difference in degree of miserableness. The ability to set up quick doesn’t prevent one from doing so at a leisurely place, but the reverse is not guaranteed without equipment specifically selected for rapid deployment.
Awesome video, you helped me make my tent decision. Best part is they are made about an hour and a half from where I live.
It doesnt take me much time for me to pitch the tent. What i really find time consuming is unloading the stuff the goes with camping. Pumping up the airbed, cooking equipment, table, water, booze, music, lighting, preparing food, cooking food and the list goes on and on. The more you want your camp to be comfy, the more stuff youre gonna have to bring and thats more work for you. So you have to balance it out. 😊😊
For the sake of feedback - based on the title/target message of this video, it definitely would have been preferable to see the camp setup completely un-cut from start to finish.
Then you’d have to watch me scratching my butt and doing my okie-blows. No one wants to see that :D
so true and i actually have round 8min setup. But i must say sometimes its nice to unpack some new gadgets and test them. Setting up camp is one thing i love to do. I take my time, sometimes the 8min become 20min or maybe even more. Its because i check my gear if all is still ok and while setting up checking what other friends have. Its fun and its a big part of my camping experience.
Speed isn’t my concern, but ability to easily set up as a solo camper is. That’s what I like about Gazelle tents. And I agree with other comments regarding stakes. Tent isn’t set up until staked out.
That was great, thanks Michael!!
Pretty cool tent.
Yep, planning to do the AZ BDR next May (2020) with my jeep and 3 or 4 dual sport motorcycles with my brother.
An an even more important part is hear that you can take back down easily. In my opinion, setting up camp is a lot easier than putting it all away when you are overlanding. Just a regular car Campout isn’t the same... if I’m just going for one night I can throw it all in the back and “clean it when I get home” but when you are overlanding you need to be able to quickly (and cleanly) dismantle it all, pack it back up, and stow it in the right order, safely, to allow travel to your next destination
Absolutely agree - the subject here is a little "loaded" for debate because you can't compare an over-nighter with day-after-day travel.
Thanks man! Love that rig👍🏼
Can't wait to see you guys in Arkansas.
And, it doesn't look that expensive. Thumbs up!
The video was so cool, I had to watch it again.
Cool video. I like these short quick videos.
We recently purchased the Gazelle tent (T4). It is AWESOME! So fast to set up and so much room! And honestly...have not read or seen a bad review on that tent. Would highly recommend! Love your videos...keep up the good work!!
hey about the gazelle tent... i have a family of 4 plus medium size dog. we sleep in bags and on pads. you think the t4 is big enough for us
Just bought the gazelle tent and only put up once. I’m a 5’2” 70 year old female and had to get help to pull one side. I think next time I’ll stake down sides and try to do myself again. I love the tent though and camp with other female friends so think I’ll enjoy it for many years.
I 100% agree on easy set up. Time isn't a factor for me, granted I don't want to spend 20min setting it up. However, after a day of driving it is nice to spend a little time doing something other than driving. I think a fine balance of set up and speed is a good balance. 👍
Another great video!
I have the Gazelle T4 in orange, and by far the best investment ever
Very cool
Hello Michael, Nice video. And I agree in a way. Not directly the time frame, but set up camp must be easy. And effortless. As you know, my energy level is not good, so I found a solution that fits me as a glove. If I just would like to sleep, sit and have a quick meal, I can be ready with your time frame. And that with less effort, maybe the same time.
And about comfort we don't argue, as this isnt something you can really discuss about. But I prefer much more comfort as that you do.
My Trailer and the way we camp here in Europe. Plus the way we travel is a bit different as you do. Different, not better, not worse, just different. And so, I like to be able to stop on a parking lot and just go to sleep. No hustle just getting in the trailer and sleep. And if I like to set up camp, I can do it in several ways. Good/dry conditions normal Sunshine, no awning just chairs and a table. A bit of rain, the before plus the awning. And not so good weather, the awning and all that is attached to it.
So, if nothing is needed, I can stop, get out, get the chairs out and Iam done.
It is all a matter of effort and the energy I like to put in.
So, I agree with you, setting up camp must be easy and without much effort.
Anyone know what that orange stove is?
Fast setup is important when it's raining or you're losing light. Yes, take your time when you can, but being able to setup camp quickly is useful at times and good to practice as well.
That's why I love my suburban. I don't need a tent. All I carry is a Coleman propane lantern, stove, cooler, pick & shovel, and food. There is a great satisfaction never having to say "I don't have room for that" or "I hope this think really is water proof".

Chair takes longer than tent to set up 😂
Haha! Yes!
Cool vid and setup. Nice if you have the space and weight capacity to carry. My
Do you have a video on that cool flip out table on your rear hatch area?
Great message. But what about a rain fly and staking and guying the tent? What about a cover for the cooking area in a downpour?
The first thing I do in rainy PA is set up a large tarp on a ridge line and then set up standard tent & the rest. 20”
What about break down of camp, to me that’s what always takes the longest?
I like the equip
I literally just got back from a short "test weekend" with a buddy of mine. Me and my Jeep XJ and him in his Land Rover Discovery 1. We took our vehicles loaded down with all our camping stuff from Denver, CO to Fruita, CO and started the Kokopelli Trail and we were to end in Moab, UT. Its supposed to be an "easier" trail and for the most part it was, but there were section where there was no other option than to deal with the obstacles. Thank goodness both our vehicles could handle those and much more. The trail guild was actually wrong in a lot of places about the severity of the trail. Obviously things are always changing out there, but by the time we got to those spots, any lesser vehicles would hopefully have turned around.
In the end we had a fun time testing out the vehicles and all our gear. We made lists of stuff that we still needed and improvements to either our vehicles or gear. Lots of improvements for me.
Overall we had a great time and enjoyed some amazing spots in Western Utah. Places that most people will never see or get to because it takes an improved vehicle and willingness to get to those places. Some of them we discovered by just checking out that spur road.
Anyhow, thanks for the video!

What about the source for those Paleo Meals to Go items? Can't seem to locate on google.
The secret was that Gazelle tent. I can’t put that on the back of my motorcycle. If I could I would.
Tbh I dig the set up! How ever. I don’t really mind set up time. When I get in the woods I am in the woods. My set up takes about 30 mins but I am comfortable. Was your nailed down? What about the bed? I dig the set up and enjoyed the ideas! Just curious on more thoughts!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
yeah!😃whoo!!!!👍
Add that rain fly time on the tent
How does this thing do with heavy rain? I'm Sure if the wind blows hard enough it would collapse one of the sides but how is the waterproofing? Any leaking at all? Experienced heavy rain in it?
Thanks!
I've been in rain, but not heavy rain.
@@OverlandBound have you noticed if the seams of the tent have seam tape or seam sealer on them?
Observations: Setup your table first, then put your food and cooking gear on it instead of on the tailgate. Then you won't have to be careful about how you take the rest of the things out of the truck. Leave the zippers open on the tent to save more time. Also, find a chair that isn't made of Tinker Toys that's quicker to deploy.
Those chairs are comfy tho. And compact!
Now do it with the gear most people have. There is a huge difference when everything you do is based on Overlanding.
Have you ever come across a Ford Expedition Overlander that was worth taking a closer look?
I think Expedition would be cool to see set up
For you people commenting, "hey what table is that...what stove is that..." ... Look in the show notes. It's all there.
Well I didn't see a cot and a sleeping bag or anything set up?
What size is that Tepui bag? Is it the tool bag?
It is the Tepui Expedition Series Tool Case!
that was awesome, cant wait to get out soon. OB #2590
How is that tent behaving in windy conditions?
Alexandru PRICOP definitely needs guy lines attached to the hubs and staked, or they’ll pop in on ya.
What Alexandru said. I rarely use them, but I do if I expect wind.
Quick for sure but the tent wasn't staked and there's nothing to sleep with inside, so it's not done imo. Also unfair to stop the clock between activities. That doesn't truly reflect the time. But it's a nice setup!
Where was this campsite at?
Usal Beach in Northern, CA
What’s the brand/stove is that?
See in description!
I usually glamp lol I'm setup in 20min.
20 minutes would be insanely quick.
Now yer just showing off.... OB#5588
I agree he is. Lol
That is sooooooo nice, I like it! OB# 4228.
lol at "flex time"
Love the music , whats the artists song name?
Which one? Time?
@@OverlandBound 4:47 till end
I Shazamed it ... looks like Sum Wave - Gone & Found :)
Correct!
Great setup. I have some doubts about your chair though. Looks like you spent 4 min on the chair and 1 min on the rest. Ahaha
Is that tent tied down ? Just askin !
Nope
No roof top tent?
He has a video why they don't use the RTT
Now they have electric ones that take 30 seconds
Mario $$$$
Very nice, well done. #17420
I'd like to see the setup without all the editing if you ever get around to it. Thanks for the video.
This bloke reminds me of Jim Carey a bit 🤔
Having been with him for 9+ years, I have never thought this and still can’t see it. 😂🤷🏻♀️ -Corrie
That was not a fully set up camp. A fully set up camp should be able to handle any whether that might come. Tent did not have fly, no shelter for cooking/sitting area etc...
But what you have is an $800+ setup.
Yes.
