Silent Night is a 2023 American action thriller film directed by John Woo and written by Robert Archer Lynn. The film features limited spoken dialogue, and stars Joel Kinnaman as a father who sets out for revenge against a gang after his son is killed in a drive-by on Christmas Eve; Scott Mescudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno also star. Filming took place in Mexico City from April to May 2022, and marks Woo's first return to Hollywood since Paycheck (2003). - Zábava

Great review Matt.
It was strange to see how the main character looked more and more like a living corpse closer to the finale. A year of training, and he catches bullets with his bulletproof vest, feeling all the pain. In the end, all that remains is death and revenge, which has not changed anything. Godlock just died trying to reflect on the pain of losing his son. A rare movie that, consisting of stamps, makes you think about yourself even after a month.
I saw some negative reviews on this film, but being the person who I am, I decided to see it for myself. Personally, I thought a lot of it worked. Like you said, there could have been 10 minutes taken off. I didn't mind that the action was saved for the climax, and with John Woo's style, the action worked. I have seen my share of films of his, like both "Better Tomorrow" movies (the ones he directed), "The Killer," "Hard Boiled," as well as "Hard Target," "Broken Arrow," and "Face/Off." So I was aware of Woo's style.
As for anything else, I, too, got vibes of "Death Sentence," but with its Christmas setting, I also thought of "Peppermint," which I also liked.
I Also forgot to mention The Mechanic from 2011 & Get Carter 2000 Remake are some of my Favorite Revenge Movies Too
I love Joel Kinnaman. He is a good actor indeed. I didn't like Robocop remake. I loved him in Safe House, The Darkest Hour, Suicide Squad, Run Ali Night & Silent Night. I have seen the trailer of this action movie. I was mind-blowing with his badass skills.
I liked it. Glad I gave it a chance.
Happy New Years! Matt
Very solid movie. It's indeed missing some of Woos trademarks, but the car chase was well done, the soundtrack was very good too. I enjoyed it more than John Wick 4 to be honest.
Joel Kinnamen has come a long way since Rubbercop, that’s for sure.
This is pretty much his redemption arc.
I personally love Death Sentence with Kevin Bacon but it's cool you like Silent Night more.
I thought it was very good too. Great seeing John Woo again.
Glad to see someone who also liked the film like I did. I too thought it was a very enjoyable film
I Love The Punisher 2004, Punisher: War Zone, Death Sentence, Death Wish Remake, Silent Night 2023, I Spit On Your Grave Remake, Last House On The Left Remake, Universal Soldier 4, Parker, Seeking Justice, Drive Angry, Law Abiding Citizen, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Dark Man, Desperado, Cold Pursuit, Collateral Damage, Bullet To The Head, Black Dynamite, Alex Cross, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, The Wolfman Remake, & The Count Of Monte Cristo those are my Favorite Revenge Movies IMO
I Like Joel Kinnaman he’s a Good Actor, very Charismatic, Not 1 of my Favorite actors I do like him I Love The Darkest Hour 2011, Safe House, Run All Night, Suicide Squad 2016, & Silent Night 2023 those are my Favorites Of his
This was a pretty decent flick IMO and as much as I hated that awful RoboCop remake Ive really started to become a fan of Joel Kinnamen over the recent years especially after seeing in him stuff like Altered Carbon, Hanna, The Killing and The Sucide Squad.
first trailer (in what seems years) that really kicked butt and caught my interest, i never expected woo to come back tbh, last slamdunk imo was face/off .... i'm surprised too about the modest reception, tbh : all those recent revenge flicks about tough guys look very similar, this here has a a bit of style on top of it to make it stick out, so at least it shows its from the master
Great review Matt just saw it and enjoyed it I thought it was an awesome film with great Acting , Action , And style .
Looks really good. Will need to watch it sometime.
My Only Flaw I didn’t like in Silent Night 2023 was I didn’t like Joel Kinnaman dying at the end but Still Love Silent Night 2023 1 of the Best & 1 of my Favorites Of 2023 IMO
Face off is a good one
Face Off is very overrated. To each their own. I do not understand the appeal of that movie.
@@ramboraph4lifeI Agree I Like Face Off it’s Ok, I Get why you’d find Nicolas Cage’s Performance In The film very Annoying, But That’s Find Buddy, That’s Actually 1 of the things I Liked about Face Off, I Enjoyed The Action, Colm Feore, Joan Allan, Nick Cassavetes, & Gina Gershon I. The Film, But I found it Pretty Slow & Dull At Times, John Travolta Gave 1 Of his Laziest Performances IMO, But Even Though I Haven’t Seen much of John Woo’s Foreign Films But I Love A Lot Of His American Films, very Capable & Stylistic, he’s 1 of my Favorite Directors, I Love Hard Target, Broken Arrow, Mission Impossible 2, Windtalkers, The Paycheck, & Silent Night are Some Of His Bests & my Favorites Of his, Silent Night 2023 is Very Underrated, Joel Kinnamon & the Other Actors & the Villains were Solid, Great Action, Stylistic Direction from John Woo, I Enjoyed The Gimmick Of it Having No Dialogue, I Honestly Didn’t Understand the Hate it Got & Sadly it Bombed Too, I Still Thought Silent Night Kicked Shit Out Of John Wick 4 which is a Shitty Film & Sequel, I’m Glad you Enjoyed Silent Night Matt Very Underrated Film❤
I have to watch this one all the way through. I only saw the ending of it but one day I will check it out the rest of it
1:13 I agree but to me his last decent film I enjoyed of his was ''Mission Impossiable 2'' but once again that's just me.
1:46 Yes exactly which I am mixed on to be honest.
2:41 Agreed! To me his performance made me forgive him for the 2014 ''Robocop'' remake.
3:30 Yes the style is there it's very different then what we are use to seeing from Woo.
5:41 Yes! Same here Matt dough I wish the musical score from that film was put into this film instead that was done by Charlie Clouser.
6:16 I don't mind ''Death Sentence'' either for Kevin Bacon's performance in that film but it seems like the film needed to make up it's mind for what it wanted to be a either a full blown revenge film or a message film about the dangers of revenge?
7:39 Exactly that's my biggest problem with that film they keep building up the villain is to make us hate him only to have a cut away come upings WTF??
11:11 A ''Hi Lo?''
11:51 I figure people was going to start picking on that again it's like we are still not allowed to villains in a film played by latino's,afro americans or asians etc come on already yes they are some not all who have done bad things to people once again I repete ''SOME'' not all just look at the 6 O'Clock news.
12:32 Your 100% right bro! I looked at it the villains aren't a cartel it's a street gang plain and simple long behold when was the last time we had a gang as the villains in a film?
14:07 True but the female cop wouldn't be in trouble had he not caused it but him making the villain think it was the rival street gang who killed his men causing the her partner to be killed and her eventually being killed even dough he tried to save her.
14:50 Good point plus you can't see any bad acting too LOL.
16:11 Yeah sadly we have lost the technology to use bullet hit squibs in films😢😢
18:41 That really pissed me off there if a women who is shooting you up without mercy and you are able to get the drop on her? SHOOT!!! Period.
19:00-19:10 True but I still rather have seen him do some of the other stuff to him instead IMHO.
Awesome job on the review bro I did enjoy despite the problems I had with the gimmick at time's👍👍
Personally Matt, This coming from a guy whose never seen John Woo’s Foreign Films, I still consider 1 of my Favorite Directors Cause I Quite Like his Style in His American Films, I Love The American Films I seen Of his Hard Target, Mission Impossible 2, Broken Arrow, Windtalkers, The Paycheck, & Silent Night 2023 those are my Favorites Of his, I Like Face Off & Blackjack there Ok IMO But I don’t love them there my Favorites Of his
This movie definitely reminds me of death sentence alot
Excellent review Matt, I’m glad you liked Silent Night because I did too!
I saw it in the theatre with two friends and we loved every second of it! For me this was the best John Woo movie in a while. I do not understand why people whine about the “Gimmick” I mean Mad Max 2 hardly has any dialogue and people also watch Mr.Bean who hardly speaks yet no one complains. Silent Night was easy to follow without any dialogue.
I will agree that it isn’t an original story and that it’s maybe 10-15 mins too long in the middle part. But holy damn is Joel Kinnamen good, the action it tight with very little CGI and the John Woo style is there but it’s used sparingly at the right moments.
It’s not Woo’s best movie but for me it sits comfortably in his American filmography below Face Off and Hard Target but above MI2, Windtalkers and Pay check. It also decimates that Netflix POS known as Manhunt. I’d say it Ties with Broken Arrow in terms of the quality.
I thought it was a little funny. Earlier we had "violent night" and now we have "silent night."
Matt he had the rambo knife and he bleeeeeeew iiiiiit lol!still enjoyed the movie tho.
Hey matt just watched it it was ok it was type of weak because its a revenge movie and i was expecting kinneman to go ham on that gang but woo said he wanted a more realistic approach rather than the shoot em up take assholes out and i miss the ballet stuff woo used to do but it was good nonetheless
This movie is awesome. The hate I've seen this movie get is completely mental. It's not even bad, but then again these are the same people that love trash like Spiderman Now way home. I saw it on December 2nd with my two brothers and my dad, we enjoyed the film. Joel is the main reason i wanted to see this movie, i loved him in suicide squad 2016 even in that sequal that I despise.
The people crapping on this movie have no clue what they are talking about.
What's awesome about this movie? Generic, straight-to-video-esque action scenes that are flatly directed and badly choreographed, forgettable music, run of the mill villains that anybody could have played, a no-dialogue gimmick that only served to make scenes needlessly awkward and nonsensical (especially the scenes with his wife), and none of John Woo's signature flair save for a few obligatory moments of slow mo as if they were thrown in to remind you this is allegedly a "John Woo" film. Btw, I don't care for No Way Home or honestly any Spider-Man movie after Spider-Man 2
By that logic Die Hard is generic, that argument is so weak dude. Litterly any movie can labeled "generic" if you've seen a ton of them. That action scenes are great TF you talking about? Litterly Die hard had flat action scenes. And your "run of the mill" villain is awful, litterly every villain from 80s is exactly that Including Die Hard. The silent gimmick is nothing to complain about, it was executed well.
It's litterly a damn popcorn movie just like every action film from the 80s and 90s.
The movie has a lot of great scenes, Joel does a marvelous job acting, the action isn't lame or cartoony like John Wick or The Fast movies.
Badly choreographed? Disagree with that entirely.
@@ramboraph4life I Agree Matt I Love Silent Night 2023 Great Action Revenge Movie, very Underrated, Great Action, Well Written & Directed Joel Kinnaman & the Other Actors did a Great Job, I Does Not deserve the hate, very Solid Underrated Film, it's Sad the Movie Bombed cause I was hope it be a Box Office for John Woo cuz he did a Bang Up Job ❤, 1 of my favorites of 2023
I was iffy on this film because of the bad reviews and not believing Joel Kinnaman so I skipped it in the theater. Sounds like I made a mistake lol.
Solid Review Matt, I Agree Matt Solid Movie this was the John Wick 4 I was asking for, Silent Night 2023 Kicks the Shit Out Of John Wick 4 which is a Shitty Disappointing Sequel IMO, Great Action, Joel Kinnaman, Scott Mescudi, & Catalina Sandino Moreno did a Great Job, Decently Gory, Solid Villains, & Well Written & Directed I had a Blast watching it in Theaters 1 of my Favorite Revenge Films ❤
Matt I enjoyed the film though it dragged in certain places especially towards the end. In regard Death Sentence the message does get muddled towards the end, but there are ramifications for his actions we see firsthand and there's acknowledgement and a critique making the film impactful despite the rough edges.
The problem with Silent Night its serious in addtion to being emotional fueled and no dialogue, the consequences of his actions are just afterthought and try tie up in a nice little bow with the letter in the end to his wife but it doesn't work its a bit disingenuous.
For example sets up false flag operation for the gangs to fight each other, knowing good and well how destructive these people and innocent people get caught in crossfire (with his plan) just like son did but he doesn't care, the film glosses over this. Sure we see one cop die because of his actions buts its an afterthought.
There are instances similar throughout the movie. If just been simple action revenge film then it wouldn't be problem but its not.
But they were fighting each other/killing regardless.
@@ramboraph4life True but there was no need to nesscarily and somewhat contradictary
This movie is like john wick if it was more boring
'More boring'. So that means you think John Wick is boring? ok...I don't get that, to each their own.
How are they even they even remotely similar?
@ramboraph4life nope I love john wick, all 4. I just worded that weird, sorry was making paint at lowes listening to the episode.
No problem.
I would not have guessed John Woo directed this if his name wasn't on it, and I would easily rank this movie among his worst
It's easily better than Manhunt, Windtalkers, Mission Impossible 2 and I'd rather watch this than the overrated Face Off
@ramboraph4life To each his own. I think Face/Off is 10x better than this film. Better action scenes, better musical score, better actors, and characters with more depth and entertainment value
@@TotalMeltdown2 Face/off is awesome. One of the best action films of the 90’s and truly one of John woo’s best American films
Face Off is better than Silent Night so is Mission Impossible 2. This Movie Sucks Balls
Very much disagree. Sorry but I would easily watch this over Face Off. In My Opinion, Face Off did not have 'depth' of characters. I got more 'depth' from Joel in this movie than I did from anybody in Face Off. Nic Cage gave one of his most awkward performances in that one. He did better in The Rock and Con Air. Travolta and Cage did not make a good team together and were better separately (Broken Arrow and Con Air) than together. It was way overlong, had too much downtime, a ridiculously silly plot...I only remember 3 action bits (the beginning, the apartment battle, and the boat bit)...and the boat bit was just fine. I think Joel Kinnaman easily gave a better performance than anybody in Face Off. And in my opinion, I think Mission Impossible 2 is straight up trash...I think that's one of the worst/most forgettable entries in that franchise watered down John Woo PG-13 (at least Paycheck had a more interesting plot and better pacing), and had so-so action set pieces. To each their own, guys.
For me this was just an alright time waster I was mostly bored until the action kicked in. The movie felt overly generic I didn't hate it but it was just same old thing I have seen a million times with the revenge story.
Silent Night is Hot Garbage imo. One of the worst John Woo movies ever made.
maybe you wasn't feeling it
Paycheck and mission impossible 2 to me are his worst
MI 2 is the worst
