Professors Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Cornel West together at Loyola Marymount University as part of the “Global Conversation” series to discuss the prevalence of culture wars in the U.S. and worldwide. Gates, Jr. and West are two of the most renowned scholars and public intellectuals in the country; embodying the intellectual response to who we are as a nation defined and often divided by our religious, economic, and racial diversity. Drawing on African American history and personal experiences, their talk will encapsulate the way we have lived in the past in terms of race and color, the way we live now, and the ways we can engage and celebrate our commonalities and differences for a better future.

Be fair. The man gave a context to his rant about Russian aggression. He spoke about American imperialism as a provocation that may explain the Russian response.
But argued that in the context of the Ukrainians as a people, super power military politics is unjust. Surely that’s a fair point that James Baldwin might have appreciated.

Dr. Cornell West been dressed up as that one picture of Fredrick Douglas for a long time. Even in the heat of summer in the south, he wears a three piece wool suit. Young people will question, not the style, but the practicality of such a man.
I say this to persuade my revered brother to bridge the gap of shear intellectual romanticism and rationality for the sake of connecting with the young minds of the present. Otherwise, I fear such a brilliant mind fading to the periphery of contemporary social constructs. And what good will that do?
