      question would this also work with a gas engine ? or would i have to add more ?

      @@SSGTWinters This design is made for electric propulsion only. If you want to convert this into a gas powered UAV, you have to think about enlarging internal area's for fuel storage and other components (instruments) that go with it.
      But the most complicated thing would be the weight by the gas engine itself, and all the combined weight by the reinforcements needed throughout the airframe to prevent fatigue by the engine vibrations.
      My advice is to keep it electric but upgrade to a powerful electric engine that has the same CC-output/or equivalent as a gas engine.

    Stone coat , has diverse uses in wet or different temp . And many videos on you tube . When you mentioned the pink backing that is also used as well . For a light coat it can even be used on floors and counter tops . With a massive choice collection of colors that can be blended to look like different stones as well as artistic touches to diverse products and uses in and out of home and many videos free to study the easy to use coating . That are smooth as counter tops or can add fillers to allow more grip for slippery floors that are wet . The product costs only about 5 dollars a square foot . But they also allow specials that reduce the cost . And in aircraft even motor oil from engines will affect the flight . So the very low friction drag of a micro silicate aspect with counter top harness in all weather use . As well as very amazing color blends . That even radar resistant additions are what might be something to test with your flights . Thank you for your videos and for sharing in your success . And hope to see more of your videos !

    Outstanding design and craftsmanship. Matter-of-fact when I first saw your video promo in my recommendations, I clicked on it looking for a link to buy it.
    I'd pay good money for the plane if you offered it in a airframe materials only build kit. Like the old Balsa Wood kits us old timers grew up building. The correct foam and plans, for convenience because for some people, sourcing the right Depron etc. can be a hassle.

    Hi you might take a look at a plane design we used to build back in the day, it was called a “ Ben buckle” it only had rudder and elevators but could be modified to have ailerons , I built one of these about 10 years ago it was so efficient it took me ages to get it down

    With your talents, I'm surprised that you haven't built a small CNC router to build your aircraft. I've designed and built an extremely accurate desktop mill and two router and have nowhere near your skills. I understand if you like the speed and challenge of how you are doing it currently but, maybe keep the CNC in mind. There's a world of resources out there to help.

      @@jhejhobbies5850 Mostly plywood but certainly aluminum although, not being a pro, the finish on aluminum that I get could be improved. More recently I've been cutting carbon fiber sheet and it is a dream to machine. Very quick although it does eat through cutters more quickly although they are pretty cheap. For these flying machines, I'd be cutting plastic, maybe the foam that is shown in the video, 1/16" and 1/8" plywood, or carbon fiber. Here is a clock that I made of wood, aluminum and carbon fiber. The carbon fiber is really tough stuff.

      But I'd start with 3D printing instead of CNC - small things like noses, Pan/Tilt or other and extend it until printing full airframes/parts to advance in aerodynamics & flight performance

    Really enjoyed the build, but a helpful comment....the duct tape will add a TON of weight. Something like a colored straping tape or packing tape will add the rigidity you are looking for while not adding an abundance of weight.

    Congratulations on hitting the algorithm! I suspect you're pulling in the vaugely-tactical hobbyist crowd. I've never made anything like this but I want to now. seems pretty affordable, and not overly complicated. Do you have another build you'd recommend starting with or is this a good one to start with?

      Thanks! It really isn’t expensive or complicated- This is my easiest way to build something close to an expensive one regarding capabilities & applications
      I have other build-videos which are easier to build (V-Tail Pusher) - Or go to Experimental Airlines for just the basic way of building an RC plane

    A step beyond the single pusher would be a twin tractor, in terms of efficiency, range and weight carrying capacity. you also have other benefits, such as no torque, slipstream effect, P factor, gyroscopic precession, easy to eliminate power/pitch coupling, payload is protected from vibration, still a good view from the front of the aircraft for sensors, better mass distribution, larger disk area, etc. also tractors have less vibration due to clean air going in the prop arc, and have more room in the fuselage, as well as less twisting of the wings by the booms. many many advantages.
    this looks very well built, and looks great in the air. how are you getting the air to air shots?

      Totally agreed on the advantages compared to this configuration - I didn't even know they were so many besides noise, vibration torque and carrying capacity.
      I'm flying a DJI Mini 2 while the aircraft does it's WP-Missions

      Twin tractor, you mean two engines on the wing pulling rather than pushing? basically every twin recip Cessna yes? I know twins are safer in case of engine failure, which also means nothing when you run out of batter, but, I'm wondering about efficiency. is that because you have more excess power for the weight? since you are not doubling the servo/controller/infrastructure weight? since you still need the motor and battery 2x. More things to break? what bout the pusher puller concept? single slip stream? you also mentioned that the forward propellor would have better air to bite into, but, then the wings have bumpier air.. I didn't know there was a benefit there.. in that case, it would be better to have 2 pushers on each wing and get the best of both worlds no? like a jet engine would. Thoughts???

      @@gjsxnobody7534 more disk area means less pressure difference for a given amount of thrust. efficiency is improved.
      yes, you are correct about the definition of twin tractor.
      yes, there is some disturbance of the airflow over the wing, but it is almost all straight by the time that the air reaches the wing if the nacelle is long enough, as they usually are.
      in the case of an inline twin, the air is accelerated twice in the same stream, which decreases efficiency, when compared to a twin tractor. it is good for very high speed aircraft, and still flies well with one engine out, in the case of fuel powered manned aircraft, but not very great for long distance flying, with the rare exception of Voyager. This worked because of the very long distance between the tractor, and pusher, and also that the pusher was shut down partway into the flight, and prop feathered.
      prop on back of wing Trailing edge would cause intense vibration due to pressure differential of the wing hitting the prop arc. it has been tried, and can work, but not desirable in most cases, and not that efficient.
      it is undesirable for the accelerated air from the props to hit anything that is not necessary, with the exception of the wing. yes, there is some bad airflow, and some loss, but there are several benefits. most of the aero drag from the accelerated air hitting the wing is recuperated in lift. the increase in lift allows the aircraft to fly slower, reducing overall drag. and mounting the motors to nacelles on the leading edge of the wing, right to the main spar saves structural mass compared to mounting them literally anywehre else.
      it also allows for 2, 4, 6, etc. motor configurations, and reduces takeoff distance significantly, as well as lift at any high power setting.
      it is counter intuitive that more motors and props is more efficient, not less. and that is only true if the motors/props are efficient themselves, and do not have a. large aerodynamic penalty in drag from each nacelle. more motors will make a draggy, inefficient design worse, but will make a good one better.
      make sense?
      don't take my word for it. look up distributed electric propulsion. most configurations use a blown wing, although there are other possibilities.

I actually have an AE degree believe it or not.. plus about 10,000TT, just haven't used it once since I graduated. and don't think about it while I'm remembering V1 cuts. I'm also surprised that this rudimentary wing shape, is quite boxy, and still generates decent lift. obviously it works. I wonder how much more efficient it would be if it wasn't a box and not boxy leading edge. It it's only a 10% improvement, then probably not worth it. Secondly, I'm surprised this kid can get 1hr ++ of loitering time. that's awesome. 3rd, how would he do long distance? what kind of cell tower service would he user for that?

    Excellent job, and very interesting! One point I may have missed. How did the outer wings were attached to the inner wings? I am assuming you used the square aluminum for a spar and support for the outer wings. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you for your efforts.

      Great you've discovered the part I left out - The spar (aluminium 1000x10x10) is put through the middle wing and the side-wings are connected with that spar as well - To secure them in place, I simply put tape between the two wing-edges.

    WOW This is incredible, I love this shape for planes!
    I tried making something similar but made the mistake of using wood for the frame and eyeballing the 90º angles, the poor thing couldn't stay level for more than 10 or so meters.
    Perhaps I'll ~~get inspiration from~~ (completely copy) your design this summer. Thanks a lot for posting this!

    Is prop noise a significant factor for you? I'm pretty new to all this and my understanding is that tractor is quietest because cleaner airflow hitting the prop. Have you found that to be true in practice? If that is the case, would middle prop be the loudest?

      You're right. Tractors are the most quit of all other configurations because like you said, there is no turbulent 'wash' coming for the prop.
      This is very noticeable with my FPV Planes as the tractors are very quiet (you can see them fly-by on my channel after Long-Range FPV moments with cetrain models), compared to the pushers like my V-Tail builds or a Flying Wing design featured on my channel (which is the loudest FPV platform I ever built) - You literally could hear it buzz at over 800m away at +300ft up...
      With this particular design, the propeller isn't that close to the trailing edge of the middle wing so the noise isn't that loud - But the characteristic pusher noise is always present. This also depends on the type of propellers (slowfly, carbon or direct-drive props)

      I second this question. I'm doing my first removable wing build but am having trouble getting them to line up an secure them in place with too much over engineering which adds too much weight.

      That's the part I accidentally left out (but is mentioned in the flight video)
      The spar (aluminium 1000x10x10) is put through the middle wing and the side-wings are connected with that spar as well - To secure them in place, I simply put tape between the two wing-edges and that' all it needs.
      Note that the spar is square so that the outer-wings can't rotate by any force of ailerons or wind, which is more likely with a round spar

      @@droomdronen731Hobbyking or AliExpress! Just search for “14 inch propeller” or 14x4.7
      If you can’t find it, other props (dependable on your motor) will also work.
      I now have a 12x6 which is more efficient than the thick 14-inch carbon SlowFly

      Launching it (with a 14x4.7) is the closest call without hitting fingers - Side/Swing launch is optional
      But I’m replacing the 14” with a 12x6 for better efficiency and less risk of a prop strike

      Thanks! It’s a belly-lander (just lands on the reinforced fuselage - The propeller doesn’t break off because the ESC has a ‘brake’ which stops the propeller from spinning by the wind

    I wanted to pursue something similar myself but once the UK locked down flight rules for aircraft like this I abandoned the idea.

      It’s possible but it’s fine with landing on the fuselage
      landing gear would add weight and drag which reduces efficiency and flight times

    Brilliant video and awesome flying plane! I wonder what you used to film your aircraft in flight? That is some great flying footage! The aircraft felt much larger in the flight video. I am surprised that it is so compact!

      Thanks! It’s 1.6m in wingspan but can be customized to fit larger outer-wings to increase the wingspan
      I flew a DJI Mini 2 while the plane did WP Missions.

    Always wondered if it's legal or so to make one of these capable of flying across a state and using something like cellular transmitting to control it
    Like if you had a whole bunch of solar panels on the wings, decent batteries, and efficient motors it could stay in the air for countless hours, especially if you ride thermals to get lift

      Thanks! ESC has a brake function to stop the propeller from ‘windmilling’ and reduce the risk of a broken/damaged prop

    a really nice build, but I personally think that the structure would be sturdier if you used 5 or 10 min 2part epoxt to glue down the most structural part, like the booms, and the motor, elseway, thanks a lot to share the project, it makes me want to make one myself

      Maybe, but it really doesn't matter. hot glue is plenty strong enough. I've built and crashed dozens of planes like this, and usually the foam rips and tears long before the hot glue fails. epoxy would give you a slight weight advantage, but the savings would be negligible on a craft with such a massive carrying capacity. epoxy just complicates the build due to its cost, cure time, workable time after mixing, and clean up.

      @@v0id683 aluminum spars at angles to deflect radar signatures, engine cowls to reduce any radar signatures that could be picked up from the engines, low reflectivity materials such as fiberglass, carbon fibre, high density foam.
      Oh and don’t forget the blended wing body which increases its range!

    Also, pure FPV is for the Pilot not allowed 😢

      USA has so many restrictions as well. Can only fly up to 400 feet, must always see aircraft, no flying in or above clouds, etc.
