  • When I started this video at 7:30am I'd done an hour of watering and not spoken to anyone since 6am, so apologies that it took a while for my voice and brain to kick in! The plot is looking reasonable after a month of very little rain and nothing for 3 weeks. Unfortunately this has caused havoc with germination but we're getting there. At least the sweetcorn and courgettes have taken but no sign of the runner beans yet. The garlic, shallots and onions (I called them garlic in the video - duh!) are doing well, as are the lettuce. Peppers have just gone in along with the tomatoes, who have suffered a bit of transplant shock. The fruit bushes are doing great, as are the new dahlias in the orchard bed and up on the bank (very few slugs and snails thanks to the lack of rain!). The fruit trees are so-so as usual, except the apples are doing well and the gage is having its best year ever! All-in-all, despite the drought, things are looking OK.

Yes, i use the cable ties on a cane across the top of my greenhouse to stop the birds perching, i also have them over my swing chair! Nice and cheap and keeps them off

Thanks Helen! That's what I thought I remembered you doing. We've also got the feathered critters pooping on the back of our bench so we're going to devise a removable strip of cable ties that we can take away when we're there and put back before we leave. All the best, David
