Are you so sure about that? got any facts to back up this claim? Most great guitar players I know have at least some musical school background. Start going through most known metal bands current and past guitar players and you will notice this. Sure you can always teach yourself, but to truly master instruments and musical talent there are great many things you just need to learn and most effective way to learn that is to attend some school. I would say most of the musical masters have classical music background and that is because classical music is the pinnacle of all music.
Dude, it is imposible to master your instrument, without a guidance.
@@ahacks7692 do you think reading books written by fabulous guitar players is not guidance?? Do you think hanging out with other guitar players that are better than you is not guidance?? This is how a pro thinks self taught players improvise, when self taught players are often better at coming up with something new and natural instead of just scales from a book/teacher 😉
Precisely! I think having the ability to channel your soul without relying on the contrivance of scales and chords… that’s something else. It’s a magical feeling when the guitar plays you so well (which is something the man in the video clearly ain’t good at).
Unless you’re in a jam band and you have to follow a certain lead.
i was a self taught player by ear for a long time (i cant read tabs im dyslexic) i am now very on the side of learning chords, scales, and theory. this whole idea of self taught being better cause you have the ability to "channel through your soul" is really stupid. as long as you care about the music youre playing thats gonna be the case regardless of if you know theory or not. theory is just the information thats gonna allow you to be more well rounded. i care about my music, i learned theory and now im a much better player. learn that shit until you can make sense of a polyphia song and youre ready.
@@HotDogBunN2YG having both is definitely an advantage, but my original post is aimed at the video where the opinion on non professionally taught players are bad is utter pompus dog turd.
The best and most creative musicians/songwriters I've ever played with were all self taught, and often amazing at any instrument you throw at them. They picked up technical things along the way on occasion, but it came mainly from playing by themselves.
I've never had a lesson, but can play drums and guitar (and a bit of piano) by ear and sometimes tab.
I played with a guitarist that was technically amazing and was still studying 10 years in. He could play all along the watchtower note perfect, but he also didn't have a natural flare for timing or improvisation and often failed at the simplest thing you should be able to pick up by ear. 😆
His song writing was also very poor, where as I could come up with catchy melodies and songs pretty easily on both guitar and drums in a few minutes.
My teacher, was the various styles of bands I was listening to.
Technique and theory is good, but natural flare mixed with a good ear is probably much better. 😉
Even my art stuff that I do as a job, I don't know any theory and was awful at school/college, but the work I produce is far more than any actual knowledge of art theory I have... And I've been working at a professional level for years.
For music, I listen as I play and if it sounds good to people, then it's good.
For art, if I do it and it looks good to people ..then it's good 😁👍
"pros" like to jerk each other off with their guitar playing skills. You know who likes to hear pros play guitar? Other pros. That's why guys like Steve Vai and them, so maybe better guitar players than most bands have, nobody gives a shit except other guitar players.
Meh, I'd say in reality being "self taught" or "taught the pro way" makes 0 difference for ability to come up with new and natural stuff. Thats down to individual talent and musicality. Chalking that up to having a teacher or not is stupid and doesn't make really any sense. Because at the end of the day, scales and chords get learned whether you are self-taught or not, and they and the ability to manipulate them and make music with them will have nothing to do with how you learned. It's all practice and repetition. If you need a teacher for that, great, if not, also great.
But what does "self taught" mean nowadays anyway? Does using CZcams or UG count?
I'm 27 now and even my 17-year-old self who taught himself to play two scales would destroy you, pro bro. You got no soul

Yeah, ive been playing guitar for 9 years now (since i was 12). Lessons never helped me much. After a year and they were still trying to explain basic chords to me so i quit that and started teaching myself and ive gotten so much further than i would have with lessons. Ive taught myself scales, improv, music theory and ive learnt so many different techniques. Ive still got a good few years before ill be a "pro" but hey, i was teaching myself how to play piano this whole time aswell. the issue is, to be a self taught musician with no knowledge of theory, that reaches the same heights of those that do. you have to have exceptional ears and musical palette. people like clapton, hendrix or claypool are anomalies. freaks of nature, it's not fair to use them as an example because the fact is, people like this are exceedingly rare.
they are very much exceptions to the rule.
@Kzed self taught means the majority of your knowledge comes from practice and personal discovery. you can learn an instrument or theory on your own and not be "self taught".. because you can still seek guidance and teachers via CZcams, books, etc. meaning.. by definition your not "self taught".. because you didn't learn the instrument primarily on your own, you used the knowledge of others to gain your skill.
clapton, hendrix, etc. are self taught. the guy that learns on his own (without a teacher) but uses resources like youtube or books. isn't.

Fr this vid is so pretentious
To keep it simple most self taught players are tought scales in box shapes and are strictly tethered to it. Pros switch between arpeggios and scale runs to highlight specific notes in each chord. It makes your playing feel like it flows with the music and not its own thing. Your friend can probably play really well and prob shred up and down. The dooo has perfect pitch relativity. Ya he's self taught, but his brain works the same way a master musicians would. That's why he can play most any instrument without much effort. Idk he's explained all this throughout a few different videos. A few on omegle, a few with the goons, and I think he went into it on one of the podcasts. As a self taught guitarist who plays in a band at venues for fun.
You rarely improvise on stage. Improvising is cool, but it doesnt lead to cool, thoughtful solos and amazing licks/runs.
That takes time, and effort to think, and sometimes you get mad because you cant decide if going from 12th fret to 14th sounds good, or if 12th to 11th is better and more impactful.
Writing a single solo can take me anywhere from 2 weeks of constantly thinking, to a month or more depending on how I WANT it to sound, listening to different solos that I like over and over again for inspiration.
@@DrCranberry well the more you practice it the better and faster you will get.
This kids dad must be a CEO at toys r us 😅
