My brother and I have a special place for this episode. After our dads sudden death, we tried to carry on some of the traditions we had. Pumpkin carving was a big one. So, first Halloween after he passed, we were carving the jack o lanterns and this was playing.
My little bro belted out the "American dollars!" bit, utterly perfect. We laughed until we cried.
The old man had also been a huge sci fi and fantasy nerd and had introduced us to marvel, lord of the rings, and, of course, the twilight zone.

Hey much thanks for sharing. I can relate to carrying on those traditions. Same here man, in my case our dad took us to so many movies growing up and all those memories will stick with us forever. Very best wishes, thanks for posting, hope to see you in the 5th dimension again.

I think the importance of genre TV like Twilight Zone and Star Trek are a way of holding up a mirror to contemporary society to examine uncomfortable truths or facts without censors freaking out. It’s because of this framing that I can excuse the chewing of scenery by the actors and hokey production value. Shakespeare touched on themes that are timeless and universal to humanity, and so are the ideas explored in the 5th dimension.

    • @FeverDreamlandTheater
      @FeverDreamlandTheater  Před 6 měsíci

Hey nct! Very well put. I agree, Star Trek and TZ (and of course other series) still resonate because many of the themes these shows explored are timeless. For example, this episode touched on the impact of isolation, a theme that we'd see covered in future episodes. Thanks for watching, be well!

It would make sense for someone in that situation to speak out loud if only to break the silence.

Exactly! Well Rod Serling was notoriously brutal in regards to critiquing his own work so it doesn't surprise me he had issues with it. Thanks for watching man! Have a good one!

Superb video. What a pilot! It really sets the tone of things to come. Man, that Hill Valley town square really saw some action over the years, huh? Serling had such a great imagination, I can see him now, wandering through that empty lot, dreaming up this story and being inspired by his surroundings. Stellar work as always, Anthony. 4k... 5k... 10k... Let's goooooo!!!! 👍

Heeeey Greg, thanks for popping in! Yeah man, I'm always intrigued with the origins of story ideas. It's interesting to me that a mundane walk on a studio set could spark this story. And aside form Serling, there's likely a million other writers with similar instances. Something to keep in mind for all those out there seeking inspiration, it can come from anywhere. Anyway, have a good one!

As aficionados of the Zone know, the second episode starring Ed Wynn dipped its toe into fantasy with Murray Hamilton playing Death. A cute story.

Before DVDs and CZcams, I resorted to watching The Twilight Zone at the mercy of televised programming, and this episode was one I always heard about but it was never shown at times I'd have been able to watch. I was told so often how unnerving it was and I was not disappointed when I finally caught it. Easily one of the best executions of the "it was all a dream" trope. And I love those Dutch angles! Excellent review and breakdown, as always!

Wow I didn’t know about the other title and narrator. Very interesting! I’m glad Rod stepped up. Orson would have been great. His narration on a Nostradamus documentary inspired Prince to write 1999. Orson kept saying 1999 over and over. This Zone pilot is powerful. I remember enjoying it the first time I saw it. Fascinating about the movie ticket! I’ll check out the Rod book. Great edits! Awesome vid! 👍🏻📽️📽️📽️📽️📽️

Apparently the ticket stub scene was in the original script but the network axed it. However Serling did get a similar shock scene in King 9 Will Return when sand is found in Robert Culp's shoes. Thanks for this overview and commentary. TZ is one of the greatest TV shows ever produced. (The original TZ that is).

Hey Garfieldsmith, I think that additional little twist would have made this one even better. I loved it anyway, but that extra hint of something beyond would have made this one far more in line with many other episodes in the series. Thanks for the watch & comment! Have a good one!

@@FeverDreamlandTheater I agree. it would have made it a masterpiece. It is still a great episode, one of the best. It did sell the series. I guess the show was so radical and new for the time that the executives Thought it better to leave it out. Still there were many endings with a twist. If you are familiar with the movie "X - The Man With The X-Ray Eyes" look up about an alternate ending. Again the distributors thought it too scary for the audience of the times.

A darn fine episode about a darn fine episode. I'm a real sucker for isolation themed movies and TV. Where a person, or small group of persons, are trapped somewhere alone. Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Dawn of the Dead '78. Etc.

    Ah...the original. The O.G. 😂
I was unaware Bernard Herrmann did the score for this. Somehow that escaped me that he did some of TZ. It also escaped me until recently that his last ever score was Taxi Driver (though they also reused a lot of his original Cape Fear score in the 1991 remake of Cape Fear too). Both of those are films I adore.

Im curious why taking away his memory was part of the isolation test? Obviously if he's training for a solo mission to the moon testing how he responds to isolation is a good thing to test for but I think taking away someone's memory or identity is unnecessary and only makes the test inconclusive because when hes in space alone he will have his memory. Having an identity, a purpose and a mission gives people strength to handle quite a lot,I think he would have done much better with his memory in tact, anyways maybe that was mentioned in the actual episode but I thought it was a bit strange. Enjoy your videos, thanks.
