Lou Rawls had such resonance and timbre to his voice. Deep bass to baritone. Bass voices like this just dont happen in modern soul or pop now. We need more Lou and Barry White these days.

I enjoyed your reaction. Lou Rawls was a contemporary and a good friend of Sam Cooke. They both grew up in Chicago and began their singing careers in gospel music. Sam Cooke was a member of the Soul Stirrers and Lou Rawls was a member of the Pilgrim Travelers. Lou's first solo recordings came out on Capital Records and he had a couple of hits there. First one that comes to mind is called Tobacco Road. This song was a rejuvenation of Lou's career in the 70's and was probably his all time biggest hit. Signing with Philly International was a huge boost for him because Gamble and Huff were that king makers at that time.

Listen to the Trammps "Rubberband". It's been sampled a number of times. Without credit.
