Totoro, also called "a giant furry thing" or "a rabbit-like spirit", is basically the spirit of the forest. Totoro is not a traditional Japanese character, but is completely made-up from Miyazaki's imagination. However, he is mixture of several animals: tanukis (the Japanese version of raccoons), cats (because of the pointed ears and facial expressions), and owls (because of the chevron markings on its chests and the "ooo"-ing sound it makes with ocarinas at night).
