      Yeah exactly! Episode 4 is what won me over with this show, still have some flaws with it but it’s actually nice and refreshing to have such a chilled out show for the LGBTQ+ community!

    I think it’s honestly just suppose to be a love story between two boys. I believe they didn’t make it dramatic filled because they just want to share a story of two people fallen for each other, and normalize it. It’s a good thing to see I really identified with Nicks character a lot I wish there was more of these shows when I was younger. I think it’s so good that young people now have shows like this that they can see themselves in and not feel alone or like their feelings are invalid. A really cute wholesome show ! I honestly loved it even with the questionable acting lmaoo

    I think the thing to remember is Charlie is _really_ young (you don't know this yet, but he's only 14 years old here) and he's going to a party for kids essentially a year or more older than him chronologically, but probably more like two years or more older in terms of character development as he's a bullied, kind of self-deprecating/low confidence nerdy kid. As someone who is not only gay but an 'outed' gay who was bullied, this is a super-intimidating place for him as it's a predominantly heterosexual environment with older kids, some of whom are bullies. Literally the only reason he is there is Nick.
    It was a major step for such a low-confidence kid like Charlie to essentially make a first move on Nick and to kiss him, confirming his fervent (and low-probability) hopes that Nick might like him back. Having had that confirmation, it was then devastating to Charlie that Nick suddenly left without saying anything when Harry called for him. Nick was probably trying to head off an issue by meeting Harry away from Charlie, but Charlie interpreted it as Nick running off because he didn't like him and that perhaps Charlie had "forced" him into something he didn't want to do. That's why he was crying on his dad's shoulder in the car.
    Charlie will go into his thought process more at the start of the next episode, but essentially the thing to know about him is that he always blames himself for everything, even when it's not his fault.

    Obviously this story doesnt resonate with your personal history in any way, and its ok. But to say "it's basic"?! It is linear, without much drama, yeah. But for queer people it involves a lot of triggering moments, lot of memories and experiences. It appears subtle, but its not at all shallow.

    • @TrophyReacts
      @TrophyReacts  Před 2 lety +31

      100% get that, I think I just meant in terms of plot I thought it was quite a simple story if that makes sense, didn’t mean the show itself is basic

    • @greenmatius
      @greenmatius Před 2 lety +58

      @@TrophyReacts I agree. Plot wise, the show is absolutely basic. But then again, there hasn't been a "basic" show for the lgbt+ community. It is always drama and secrets and unrelatable plot twists

    • @erikperhs_
      @erikperhs_ Před 2 lety +24

      I'm gay and possibly non-binary and I think it's pretty basic. Boys like another boy but thinks he's straight, discovers he's not and they date. That's pretty much it. You don't have many plot twists, not much drama... AND THAT'S WHY I LOVE THIS SHOW 😭

    • @DIEGOSHAY
      @DIEGOSHAY Před 2 lety +1

      I'm queer and I agree it's pretty basic. But that's okay, it's a show for kids.

    • @daniloliguigli3356
      @daniloliguigli3356 Před 2 lety +9

      Ok, you can consider it basic in terms of plot but it still interesting and surprising cause normally we expect a big drama like in the middle of the story he would left Charlie to stay with the girl and break his heart, and only by the end of the series or in a second season they would figured everything out and come back together, but that didn't happen which is surprisingly good and not a cliché. I mean it's nice to finally see something more realistic and not over dramatic. Another example is when he explains to Charlie about the date with Imogen, he doesn't lie, he explains everything how it happened and that's it, they were cool. That refreshing honestly.

      @AnnekeOosterink Před 2 lety +2

      But probably also a little bit his past with Ben, like, him saying sorry all the time and calling himself annoying and clingy is at least in part caused by Ben not wanting a relationship and putting Charlie down all the time.

    • @MemphisTiger
      @MemphisTiger Před 2 lety +2

      Actually...you couldn't be more wrong with your assessment. Charlie wasn't afraid he mistakenly made out with a straight guy who will now hate him and maybe be violent...he was upset because he simply thought he ruined his friendship with Nick.

    The way every episode made me want to punt Harry into the next universe I swear... the worst character ever.
    I liked the series because I don't think it did all the typical cliches? Like Nick was pretty clear on his feelings early on, not denying and having major homophobia or pushing Charlie away. He also stood up to the bullies and didn't ignore Charlie because of their pressure. They kissed, when most shows would have interrupted it too... I like that it kinda does these unexpected things.
    I also love how we see supportive parents.

    actually 3 dozen serious real-life, current cultural challenges went into the storyline; it’s handled in a supremely realistic, low-key, naturalistic way and thus makes doing the healthy and effective and right thing RELATABLE while acknowledging the situations are tough, but there’s that ‘we can get through this’ message throughout the show, and it was really thought out: that gay men (and any one who’s lgbtqia+ or otherwise) doesn’t have to settle for being used physically instead of being loved as the person they are and can be kissed as an outflow of that appreciation instead of kissed for physical pleasure only-you don’t have to be lonely,

    • @erinh9267
      @erinh9267 Před 2 lety

      the sidelining or unwillingness to acknowledge bisexuality, a gay person being supportive of a bi character on his own sexuality realization rather than allowing it to feel like a threat and then try to pressure him to be exclusively gay, girls and boys can be friends, forced kissing even by someone who is in a tough situation is still sexual battery;

      a gay teacher can be a non-pedophile who is clearly ONLY interested in a wholesome way in the life of a gay student, *communication*, that supportive friendships are huge in life and that friendship is an element of healthy romance; a hetero boy can be dramatic and moody and caring, that a Latin dad can be hetero and wear his fancy pinky ring and be loving,

      that we have to reach out from our partly ‘self-made isolation’ to give love more room to take root, a parent realizing they could have made it harder for their kid to come out based on their framing of heterosexuality to the kid, asexuality and aromance exist, subtle allusions to the plethora of pain and trauma in many films on lgbtqia+, trans kid having highly relatable childhood/teen experiences, an asian mom being accepting of and supportive and demonstrably loving toward a trans kid friend of her kid’s;

    • @erinh9267
      @erinh9267 Před 2 lety

      violence of a verbal or physical nature isn’t the most effective nor kind choice-the bullying can increase; that authorities need to step in, that we can confront cruelty as what it is-abproblem in that person’s self-management, and that de-escalation is powerful and heroic tool (see Nick consistently throwing aggressors out and standing between victim and aggressor rather than beating aggressing people to a pulp-remember Nick could have been suspended, too, if he hadn’t had the self-control to back up on the field with Harry after he pulled Harry off the other student, and then Nick would not have been there for key scene on Sports Day);

    I can’t wait until you grow up and don’t have to make a self consciously cynical or pretentious comment every seven seconds. You might actually be a competent critic someday if you ever learn to shut up for more than a few moments at a time. As well, it might behoove you to at least make an attempt to remove the ridicule from your voice and overall attitude. It detracts from what could be a more professional and objective critical stance. Rating: 3 out of 10. The reviewer is literate and possesses a modest breadth of cultural experience. He probably needs to get out more and actually live his life a bit rather than sitting at home subjectively ridiculing every little morsel he deconstructs.
