    Kit Connor played this role amazingly, he brought such a vulnerability to it that makes it so authentic and endearing. The way he subtly is able to portray the array of emotions here is such excellent performing. You can feel the terror, confusion, yet excitement, joy and love. I think what is especially nice in this show is that instead of these characters pulling away from each other or getting angry, they actually take the chance and open up to one another. Nick especially, as the "straight" character with the societal pressure could easily become the typical repressed and angry guy when confronted about the truth of his sexuality. Instead, the characters allow themselves to be completely authentic and vulnerable with one another and Kit really embodies that in this character. Show had me bawling like a babe!

    20:00 not only was that interaction awkward, it showed what a wonderful human being Nick is, and that's why it's my favourite scene.
    He goes to check in on Tao, and then Tao humiliates him by not giving him, the rugby star, the ball back. It's like he's challenging Nick to take it from him, and all of Nick's teammates are waiting to see what Nick does. But he just shrugs and goes away.
    But then Tao hits him with the ball, which was just so upsetting (he also does it while Nick's back is turned, which is a low blow). He shouldn't have thrown the ball at Nick, who's done nothing to him. I get that Tao is taking his anger out on Nick, but he should've just thrown the ball at Harry, aka the guy who hit him in the first place.
    Nick has all the right to confront him about it too, since that was uncalled for on Tao's part. But he just looks hurt, like a kicked puppy. And then he calmly takes the ball and goes away, proving what a peaceful, bigger person he is.

    • @coena9377
      @coena9377 Před rokem +37

      Honestly I think that was one of Nick’s low points. His friend picks on Tao completely unprovoked and not only does he not call Harry out, he *doesn’t* “check in” on Tao, he just asks for the ball back. If he’d said something like “I’m sorry he threw that at you, are you okay?” that would’ve been completely different and probably would’ve changed Tao’s view of Nick entirely. Instead he just asks for the ball back immediately after his friend used it to attack Tao. Harry was starting a fight and Nick wasn’t calling him out and really wasn’t doing much to deescalate.
      If I was in Tao’s position, I wouldn’t have thrown it at Nick like Tao did, but I probably would’ve told Nick to piss off when he asked for the ball back.
      Ultimately Nick made the right choice by dumping his old friend group but in that scene he was still mostly being a passive bystander while Harry acted like a bully.

      Imogen always was iconic, to be fair. She, Tori, Darcy and Isaac are some of the funniest characters in the show. People didn't like her because it seemed like she'd get in the way of our boys, but actually, Nick was using her as a beard and giving her mixed signals... I can understand why, but actually it's Nick who's at fault here, not Imogen. And all things considered, she took the rejection like a champ, covered for him when he was confronted by the lads, remained friends with him and was happy to figure out that he and Charlie were together.

    • @graphiquejack
      @graphiquejack Před 2 lety +122

      Yah, really her only weird flex was claiming they were together solely on the basis that they agreed to have a date, and to go up to Tara to basically tell her to back off. For why Harry and the gang are so invested in Nick's dating life, I have a potentially baseless headcanon that I've been ruminating on. I think Harry sees Nick and Charlie getting close, and while he probably isn't clued into their romantic potential he is seeing a new best friendship developing, so he is actually feeling the same things that Tao is feeling. He doesn't want their friend group to change, and maybe even thinks that without Nick's positive energy to balance the dynamic that he'll lose the rest of his friends if Nick ditches them. But while Tao voices his concerns to Charlie and mostly just scowls from the sidelines, Harry tries to just bully Nick into a heteronormative relationship so that he's more tied down to their circle.

    Nick, and the actor who plays him Kit Connor, is such a precious perfect little bean. His tears at the quiz are so relatable, and i think its more that its inconclusive than that he might be gay. But then that giant grin while he watches Tara and Darcy be so openly themselves. The way he answers with uncertainty until Charlie asks him if he'd kiss him, bc all he really knows for sure yet is that he wants Charlie. When Charlie's mum points out he's still in pajamas, Nick gets a cheeky little grin and covertly checks out Charlie before going back to looking sheepish and apologetic. Every time their secret is hard on Charlie, he looks just so wrecked with guilt, making him the total opposite of Ben.

    This show made me cry of happiness for them but also of sadness for realising that the fact that we didn't have shows like this as teenagers to tell us that it's normal to feel what we felt really affected how we have relationships. I'm 32 and I've only had one relationship in my life that lasted a year and a half when I was 21 and it was extremely toxic and it left me scarred for life. Never had one again after that. However, I'm so thankful that three years before that happened, when I was 18, I got to experience pure innocent love like that of Nick and Charlie's with a different person. It was magical. I wonder if I'll ever feel the same way again for someone. The electricity of the hands touching, the heart beating fast when talking to them, the first kiss...

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo Před rokem

      You are so right.
      I have often said that many, many adult gays’* emotional development is stunted because we couldn’t start testing the waters, practicing, etc. at the normal age. When other kids were having what I call “practice relationships” (and learning to flirt, etc) as young teens, many of us a) didn’t necessarily understand yet the feelings we were developing, and b) couldn’t have dared act on them even if/when we did. And if we did things that other kids did - like a first kiss with someone of the opposite sex - it didn’t feel right, and we’d wonder what was wrong with us, why we don’t enjoy the same things everyone else does. I think that, and the bullying that was commonplace, sowed the seeds of the self-doubt that plagues so many of us gays throughout life.
      And coming back to your comment, and why this show is resonating with so many adult gays, is how when we were growing up, backhanded homophobia was still really commonplace, and that included how media portrayals of gays were invariably tragic, depraved, or as comedic relief. What we never saw during our adolescence - and it’s not even the slightest exaggeration to say _never_ - were portrayals of gay people as normal people, nor anything even vaguely resembling an upbringing we could identify with, emotionally at least. I know I always felt like an outsider observing at arm’s length, without seeing myself in any of it. Only in the past few years have there been stories like that truly portray our experiences, and Heartstopper by far comes the closest.
      *by which I mean LGBTQ+ people who are now adults

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo Před rokem

      As for your hopes for the future: you and me both… ::sigh:: But it will.
      Just try and make sure that negative relationship doesn’t define you - you don’t want to have that monkey on your back. And frankly, the a-hole who hurt you doesn’t _deserve_ to have lasting impact on your life, especially not a negative one. They aren’t entitled to that kind of power over you. This doesn’t mean pretending it didn’t happen, because it did, and that does shape you. But remember that you deserve to be happy, and that what others did to you does not change who you are at the core. If someone treated you badly, that says something about _them,_ not you.
      What I can say, as someone who’s had a few relationships is that when the right person comes along, it feels _totally_ different. In me, one way I notice this is a very particular way: Despite being a very sociable person, I am a strong introvert and thus have a very high need for “alone time” to recharge my emotional/social batteries, and even my closest friends intrude upon that. But in my longest relationship, that simply wasn’t the case. He could be around and (provided he wasn’t throwing another tantrum 😒) I could still recharge. And I think, had he not had his own demons to deal with, we probably would have stayed together. I’ve been in a few relationships since then, but none so far has felt as deep.
      I can also say this: every relationship teaches you something more about yourself. You learn that some things you thought would be important aren’t, and you’ll discover things that are important that you hadn’t even realized before. You’ll learn what things to do - and not do. You’ll learn about patience, anger, forgiveness, boundaries, and joys. About puppy love, infatuation, and true love. So even “failed” relationships are actually a win for you, and kinda necessary. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
      So good luck, take care of yourself, and big hugs!!

    I’m really enjoying watching you react to this show! I had such an emotional reaction to it, immediately rewatched it, but haven’t had the chance to watch/discuss it with someone else who had the same strong reaction. Even some online/distance solidarity is nice! It’s wild, I feel like protective over the characters as an adult, but also like I am the characters, and also teenage-me just loooves them! This pure joy to morbid depression and back again is quite the emotional journey, haha.

    i still haven’t come out as bi properly (only to like 4 people) but i’m honestly so scared of how people will treat me differently especially in school and when you said “bi is fine” it honestly made me feel such a sense of love and relief

    I could SCREAM of how accurate this is! I reacted almost the EXACT same. This series gave me so many emotions. I laughed, cried, and was angry. Everything at once sometimes lol. I smiled, almost the whole time, because the series is so wholesome.
    I remember crying for 5 minutes straight at the end of the series! Just because it was soooo beautiful.
    Such a masterpiece and a absolute relatable Reaction

    As someone who's watched the series 11 times (yes, I have issues), I have yet to through the whole thing without crying at least once (again...issues). But I have to say, it's comforting to see someone have exactly all the same reactions I did when I watched it the first time 😄

    I wish I could be younger again with the experience and “confidence” I have gained now! Being 15/16 and making your first experiences not really thinking about consequences, I would have loved being so true to myself back then. I have the feeling that now I’m in my 20s everyone just expects you to have yourself all figured out when really I’m just looking for these experiences bc I missed out on them.

      I feel this too and I’ve just turned 30. When you’re queer it’s so hard to have those typical formative teenage experiences that heterosexual teenagers get to have and then you grow up and sort of play catch up.

    This series was so special to me watch, it’s insane how much I related to multiple characters. I’m bi and questioned my sexuality for 3 whole years (between the ages of 13-16) before finally accepting I was bi and it was so stressful and overwhelming at times and being bi can be so frustrating because so many people including my own mum think people only say they’re bi because they’re confused but I didn’t come out until I was absolutely sure of my sexuality. The scene where Nick does the am I gay quizzes is so relatable for many of us, I know I did them 😂 I also relate to Elle when she said she didn’t even attempt to make friends and closed herself off because she assumed no one would want to be her friend, I moved school for A Levels and did the exact same!! 😅
