Serotonin Hypothesis of Depression: Is It Accurate? | Neuro3

  • In this episode of Neuro3, we at Psyched! discuss a paper conducted by Moncrieff, et al. (2022). In this umbrella review, various meta-analyses, reviews, and other large studies, on the topic of the serotonin hypothesis of depression were analyzed. This well-established hypothesis argues that depression is associated with the lower concentration of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain,
In this review, hundreds of publications were initially gathered in the literature search, but ultimately, 17 studies were included in the final analysis. This analysis yielded findings that seem to contradict the serotonin hypothesis of depression. Specifically, the authors failed to find convincing evidence for an association between the availability of serotonin, serotonin receptors, and serotonin transporters (SERT), and depression.
Despite these findings, it is important to note that, although serotonin levels may not directly correlate with depression severity, this does not mean that serotonin is irrelevant in the context of depression. Effective antidepressant medication, such as SSRIs, specifically target serotonin reuptake, which points to serotonin at least playing some role in the etiology of depression.

USE OF STOCK IMAGES AND VIDEOS
Occasionally we make use of stock images and videos (pixabay.com or pexels.com). We use these to make our videos more lively (better than looking at a blank screen). These stock videos should not be taken as an exact scientific reflection of the discussed content. In some cases they are not fully accurate. We try to have a high viewing pleasure, while at the same time create as little confusion as possible. Thus we aim to only use them when it is clear that they are not directly related to the discussed content.

A bit confusing ending, but great work and editing. The term "effective ssri's" is perhaps not the way to end the video? Great that this topic is lifted up! Thanks
