Seen it a hundred times but it never gets dull
They don't play this sort of music anymore. Love the bass & drum groove.
Sounds like a 70s Soundtrack
Oh yes! Real dirty bass for Dirty Harry. Outstanding music.
Lalo Shifrin, check his work, some of the best soundtracks ever.
Clint is just the coolest dude ever. Respect is due for a career that spans over five decades. A real icon of American culture.
Un fenómeno joderrrr.
Un fenómeno con un físico como nadie ....
No argument there👌
Cultura estadounidense, no americana , América es un continente y, en éste continente hay muchos países con diferentes culturas y lenguas. Saludos cordiales.
@@Nito654I'm from Brazil and this movie is part from MY culture , BRAZILIAN CULTURE IS A PIECE 0F SHIT
This track influenced me to become a drummer when I was a little child.
Isn’t the drumming top drawer stuff👍🏼
@@harryrammer yes it really is!!😁
I can see why. Awesome drumming in this piece.
👍👍
John Guerin.
The amount of swagger Clint is carrying in this scene, movie and all his life is enough to make any man wanna be a badass just like him.
Don Siegel was such a great director. Love how he has Clint coolly work his way up to the top of the building but cuts off Lalo's brilliant fast-paced frenetic score just for a few seconds so we can hear that giant fan and the footsteps along the metal walkway with that great camera angle looking up at Harry.
Shane Anthony I agree, that was a brilliant editing move
Not to mention the sirens in the background.
Yes. The editing, timing, music, suspense. Movie has it all.
This was when Hollywood listened to the experts and allowed them to make a great movie. Now it's all "it's our money so you do as we say" - the suits. The soundtrack always matched the mood of the story, also.
Imperative to watch Coogan's Bluff too - same star, same director, three years earlier but showing the same sensitivity to a city-as-character (New York there, San Fran here)
It’s such a simple title sequence but it’s so flawlessly shot and scored and edited that it’s impossible not to enjoy and Clint Eastwood is so insanely cool and charismatic.
Far from "such a simple title sequence," it's actually quite complex, not only visually but thematically as well, foreshadowing what's coming in the movie proper.
Shifrin has been a genius rock star for almost 60 years. His music can make any movie a lot better. Sometimes it's the best thing in the movie. An amazing talent.
Chaz Sanford he was more in jazz, in fact he was probably the first acid jazz componist
that's jazz
TOTALLY AGREE!
Lalo Schifrin, Henry Mancini and Ennio Morricone....great movie score composers...
Hell yeah
Don't forget John Barry
Piero umiliani
Bruno Nicolai
Piero piccioni
Stelvio cipriani
That panning rooftop shot just before Harry finds the shell case is very well done.
One of the best movie openings. It's all dramatic and fast paced one minute, laid back the next.
Not to mention fantastic score....
i love this film its a masterpeice, the sound track is just something else, realy nitty gritty dirty innercity kinda sound that sets the pace to the movie.
No fancy CGI, just great cinematography, a soundtrack that conveys the suspense and seriousness of the storyline and an actor that's never done a bad film. Like with music, it's getting rarer and rarer to come across anything that's in the same league as stuff created in the 60s, 70s and to some degree the 80's.
I just love the music score in this opening credit. Great composition of music. A classic.
San Francisco was just as much a star in this movie as Clint Eastwood.. love watching these and being immersed in San Francisco in the 70's.
Always liked the ambient noises fitted so well with Schifrin's groovy score; a good example is at 2:18, the ship's horn hits the perfect note!
The coolest character in movie history.
+Bruningable Wel, there was Steve McQueen. But Eastwood had meaner roles. "Make my day" was a chiller.
Nah, Steve McQ was a real 'try-hard' - desperatate to be top-bill, insecure, an ass to work with apparently. Whereas Clint is always just 'Clint'. And then there's the truly amazing run of critially acclaimed films Clint has produced... no comparison.
Hit the nail right on the head with that one. 'Try-hard' sums McQueen up perfectly. Eastwood 'Fills up the screen,' whereas SM doesn't even come close. He needed cars and girls to fill gaps, Eastwood did it with a pair of sunglasses.
Idk Hans Gruber is pretty damn cool
@@joechaos13 he is a Villain lol
Why can't they make movies like this anymore.
quatz1981 it would stir controversy... like people would argue Scorpio did have rights
Because, my fellow 1981 brother, men of today have lost their balls and feminists and SJW'S are holding them. Deep down though, men and the good women of today wanna see a movie and character like Harry come back into our lives. We need him now more than ever.
@@mp5362-i1pYeah! All these Me Too Chick flicks my two lady friends try to drag me to.I like my flicks with style and substance.
quatz1981 And the cool cars! 50s-70s. .

Truer words have never been spoken. Liberal's suck.
Lalo Shifrin made an amazing job to individuate such a strong drummer and bass guitar man!!!
Love that piano riff and bassline
Interesting that Schifrin did this great opening score and Bullitt with both films set in San Francisco.
Eastwood and McQueen knew each other well, probably a recommendation.
cool city - cool groovy times....
Nice. Both those films are mentioned in 'Zodiac' (2007).
He did Cool Hand Luke too. Great, great scores..
The coolest soundtrack ever, and Dirty Harry is the King of Cool!
Rock on, Big Guy!
Officially released in theaters on December 23, 1971. Happy 50th to Dirty Harry!
👍😮
Lalo Schifrin is sheer brilliance and talent.
Beautiful score by the great Lalo.
Some people can make the argument that "Bullitt" was the catalyst of the loner bad ass undercover cop movies but I would say that this one, Dirty Harry really set the tone! :) Awesome classic trilogy!
terrorofsesameST I would argue that the focused, single crazed villain, better music, more brutal protagonist, interesting camerawork, better use of humor and no romantic component make Dirty Harry the better film.
And I would say " You are Correct " the only thing that made Bullitt good was the Car Chase and Lalo Shifrins soundtrack , cuz McQueen was a terrible actor , Clint could at least deliver great one liners and have a venerable side and still be cool
Although not a cop, Lee Marvin in Point Blank, 1967.
1.10 those drums ! ....The coolest introduction to any actor in any film ever made :)
Agreed!
Double yess!! Groovy n funky as fuuuuuuuck!
Clint Eastwood and Lalo Schiffrin..... It doesn't get any cooler does it? Let's face it 😍😍😍
The " Malpaso" was actually a good step here.
Whenever I see the opening score I'm amazed at the shot taken from such a distance considering wind speed, height and gravity.
Perfect motion picture opening.
You can tell this is 1970's music from conga drums, bass guitar, piano, trumpets, eventually the beginning of 70's music from movie themes would make it pop music made into disco, funk, etc after the psychedelic rock music from mid 60's ended in the early 70's.
Sends shivers down my spin everytime I watch this 😊
lalo’s music is bad ass
Siegel and Schifrin masterpiece: best opening ever, iconic and immortal
Yeah I remember I rented the movie in about 2001, and was amazed at the opening music. I watched the opening credits about 10 times in a row.
Bloody hell clint looks ultra cool & badass
I was able to take a film class in college 2 years ago and one of the notable parts about late 60s/70s movies was the huge transition from generally filming on set to filming outside, at least with crime films. The 70s Neo-Noir genre is personally one of my favorites
3.13 wow that transitional change up with the electric key board , just transending momment, and quite ironic when finding the bullet casings ..........a moment etched in time by great music writers, and movie producers, such master piece !!
lalo schifrin es argentino y uno mas de los tantos genios nacidos en argentina
When on holiday in San Francisco a while ago all I could hear was this theme music....too cool
I couldn't agree more...from 3:13 to 3:30 is sheer heaven.
Clint never gets old. I’m gonna miss him when he passes.

REALLY TIGHT SOUNDTRACK DUDE,MAN I CAN DIG THOSE GROOVES BABY!
I remember trying to watch this as a kid at a birthday party but an older guy wouldn't let me. Saw it on my own eventually anyway.
I remember the first time I watched the movie, the music (and the scene in general) at 1:57 gave me chills. It still does. Incredible.
3.13 oh that key board is spine chillingly brilliant, I play it many times truly amazing
"Now you know WHY they call me Dirty Harry...EVERY dirty job that comes along!"...CLASSIC!
Sometimes when I try to listen to this from start to finish, without interruption. I just am compelled, and can't resist, to skip back to 2:40. The way the tone drops to a foreboding, haunting beat. And seeing Scorpio's perfect sniping view, this brings you back to realise that this movie means business. After the twangy, catchy, infectious, foot tapping, psuedo porn music that precedes it.
Perfect use of direction, editing, timing, camera and music. :)
Don Siegel was indeed an A 1 director. And you'd be hard pressed to find a better Director of Photography than the great Bruce Surtees.
wannawatchu66 And of course a great composer in Lalo Schifrin.
1965-1977ish good period for film. Gritty, and relatively realistic action and not weighed down with laughable 80s action heroes, present day superheroes and militant, juvenile, “leading nowhere” left wing politics.
Amen. The recent unnecessary and self-flagellating left-leaning trade interventions in the USA would make a good case-in-point.
Wtf, leftist politics were present in hollywood. Infact dirty harry was so warmly received due to not being liberal shlock
Shifrin at his best.
Thanks for this.
Whats produced in Hollywierd now days doesn't hold a candle to this?
I guess people are as not enthusiastic about movie making anymore...
More like those that still go have forgotten what a great movie really consists of!
Those session cats cut such a groooove that day, man...Lalo bought 'em some grass and they smoked it like tigers on vaseline or eatin' a piece of fried chicken, y'dig? Funky music sho' nuff turns me on...shamone!!
I saw this movie the day it was released I was 13 years old I've seen it at least 200 times since then my favorite movie of all time
So glad I visited the bar at the top of 55 California St (whose lobby and frontage were also used in Towering Inferno) when I did/you could - it closed a year or so later.
😮
Fantastic opening with Clint being the king of cool and with amazing music. Wow.
Clint, Don & Lalo..... a Holy Trinity right there..
This is about the coolest of Schifrin ever. The truest golden vibe of the '70s, these exact sort of comps. got me curious about jazz, in particular Fusion. Jazz rock. "Electric piano" was it. ✔
the best ever Clint Eastwood
Out standing !!
Great 70s funk jazzacid.
Theme from Street of San Fransisco is fantastic.
I read somewhere years ago that John Wayne turned this role down because he was ill. He did McQ shortly after this movie was made. Fate had played a role in Clint getting this movie.
Phew. Thank @$^#% for that. I've never made it all the way through a John Wayne movie in my life.
For whatever reason this song to me is San Francisco's theme song it always reminds me of San Francisco
It’s jazz, groove , deep funk and house at a same time, with jazzy drum and and bass, but in percussions… LAlo is soo good
Perfect soundtrack for this movie. Lalo Schifrin hit it right on.
This bullitt and kellys heroes are the best sound tracks of the seventies!
stuckintraffic?getabike!
I wish somebody would load Kelly's Heroes full soundtrack on Tube...
Schifrin's music is so cool and unmistakable.
The opening credit sequence inspired both Shaft and Enter The Dragon's credits sequences with a character walking through a major city scape.
The music is just off the scale, pardon the pun!
Just the coolest possible soundtrack for the best film, still blows me away with smiles!
Thank you. I've loved this scene and music for years. A great movie :)
The best part of the music was yet to come, especially that bass line.
Always laugh at the annoyed cop at 0:01 that Harry almost hits with the door. Even in the first few seconds he's onscreen, it's already established that the character of Callahan really doesn't give a shit about anybody.
Just the coolest intro to a super cool film.
This is my go to theme in my head, .. even if I`m only going to the local shop
This is the soundtrack in my head when I'm walking through North Beach or FiDi.
"Dirty Harry" was a hard core movie, with Clint Eastwood playing a much less sympathetic character than in the later films of the DH series. There was huge potential to continue the development of the "rogue cop"character as first conceived. Eastwood actually played really villainous roles very well (as in "White Hunter, Black Heart" ) and should have done it more often.
Acid Jazz!
Outrageously groovy, Lalo AF!!!
love the abrupt "Jesus"
I wonder if Carol Kaye did the bass work in this opening theme. Sounds like her style.
Clint Eastwood in my opinion the best actor in the world a pure genius god bless him
"Yeezus..."
👍👍👍
bullshitmrhanman who knew Harry was a Kanye fan
I used to think he said "Jaysis".
3:40 “Yeesus”🕶
50th Anniversary of Dirty Harry (1971-2021)
:-O
Greatest movie of all time.
Don siegel ,Clint Eastwood,...etc and the debut of Andy Robinson was so great
Back in '95 I actually got all the way up to the roof door but it was alarmed so I decided not to try it.
What‘s so great with this 70th movies and music, they have a suspense bow.
They take their time to build up suspense - and you know it will end in a crescendo or an outbreak of violance.
Modern movies and music don’t take that time anymore. It’s all fast cuts or music with every tone pressed to maximum loudness.
That is the reason that modern music and film is bullshit.
ha ha. If you ever see one of those "reality TV" shows like The Amazing Race, Globetrotters, Race Across the World, etc, but turn the sound off, you discover that the exciting and high-tension music and sound accompanies a couple of people standing on a street corner discussing a map.
One of the best movies ever made crime wise
you can hear the dirty harry type music in lalo schifrins COMMANDO OPUS from kellys heroes. 1970.
To this day, the absolute epitome of cool 😎
2:43 the swimming pool crime scene still has the victim's blood, viewed from the building where notorious Scorpio made his sniper shot. Don Siegel's attention to detail as Inspector Callahan is making his investigation.
Absolutely cool stuff.. 😊
Watching this when i was 13 changed my life 59 now clint is the man
The movie that launched Clint into the stratosphere of Mega stardom.
I love seeing blue skies and natural colors like these in old movies. We just dont get these anymore.
You'll get them back. About 10 years or so after you all stop blowing smoke all day and all night.
@@elgalloazul Wow man. Thanks. You're talking to someone who doesn't know how to drive a car haha. But yeah. There's cars that can run on hydrogen. Each time someone finds that technology, government shuts them down. So yeah.
@@youarelife3437 I think we in Australia are the second worst smoke-blowers in the world, after USA. It's only the relatively low population density that allows us to get away with it.
Happily, we are no longer stuck with 19th-century technology to power cars, nor 18th-century technology to provide energy in general. It's merely a question of starting to use current technology.
@@elgalloazul I hear you. Much of the world's problem is from a conflict about letting go of the old and accepting the new, be it on the individual level or the collective.
@@youarelife3437 Yep, human beings innately avoid changes. ie. are conservative. Conservatism seems to go up and down in waves. The western world has been high on the wave for the last decade or so.
The music is excellent.
What a bummer. It's the one day that it's warm enough to go swimming on a San Francisco rooftop, and Scorpio had to ruin it.
You don't know that. It MIGHT have been what the mousey-haired woman in the yellow swimsuit wanted.
:25 -1:30 John Guerin is filthy on the drums
