    There’s no denying that it is quite remarkable what a small com-any like Leica has achieved over the past 5 years with the SL system. And I know you don’t like to talk about products outside the Leica brand, but what for me really converted SL into a true ‘system’ over the past few years is how the cameras are getting support from other manufacturers. Full tethering with live view in Capture one, various very good macro options up to even 2:1 (Laowa), adapters (sigma, novoflex) to harvest the full EF-mount Arsenal (tilt-shift, super tele, etc), super wide-angle (Laowa), very affordable and light weight primes (sigma), advanced video cameras (Panasonic), etc, etc. Still holding hopes up on Profoto….

    I just ordered the SLS-2 with 24-70 (can't call it a kit lens because calling this a kit lens would be an insult 😀) and with this channel, I think I have found "my people". Love your passion and the geekiness (and I say this with the highest praise) for Leica and photography.

    I just took the quiz. Kristen is a genius. First, the questions were wonderful. Second, the quiz answers picked the camera I bought befor going to Paris!

    You really should make a part 2 of this episode, talking about the L mount alliance. It's a bit restrictive to only limit the SL system to Leica. It's so much vaster. There is plenty of very interesting and qualitative lenses from the two other members (and some third)! 😉

    End of 2020 I did an extended side-by-side trial of different high-res mirrorless cameras to replace my previous Fujifilm gear for fashion and make-up portrait work. I ended up with two finalists: the Z7II and the SL-2. Both are exceptionally good stills cameras. I decided to go with the Z7II to go along with my H6D. The main reason was the lacking Profoto support. When I mentioned this to a Profoto account manager, he smiled mysteriously and told me to ‘wait and see’. So, that lead me to the conclusion that Profoto support is on its way. Professionally I am by no means disappointed with the Nikon performance. It’s a great (small) camera and dito lenses, but personally my heart lies with Leica and either my M10-R or the Q2 Monochrome are always within reach.
    By the way, thanks again for a great show. Entertainment and valuable insights go hand-in-hand.

    Sorry I am commentating late - this is one of the best shows you guys have ever done. You have really helped convey the incredible performance of the SL camera and lenses and what it represents in both the Leica world and photography in general. Your perspective - which you objectively test - on the differences in performance is right on. Wide open SL lenses are fairly unique and though I own tons of M lenses, only the 35APO and 75mm Noctilux truly compare in absolute performance. There are many other goals you guys well note for lenses, but at least the air has been cleared on this front. The SL is still the most “under-appreciated” of the major Leica camera lines and you guys helped remind everyone of just how amazing this mirrorless system has become. Kudos!!!!!

    You're a Leica CL.
    You are just a straight up cool cat. You're the MINI that dominated Monte Carlo. Although unassuming at first, you are a quiet force to be reckoned with. Don’t short change yourself.
    Thanks for this Quiz!! it was fun!

    Great video. Positioned the zooms vs prime selection very well. The 90-280 is more versatile than a 70 200 f2.8 with a 1.4 teleconverter that become a f4, 105 280. If you need more length Sigma is the only option.

    I would have liked to have seen David carrying all that equipment in a backpack on a hiking expedition. I love the concept and design of these cameras and I am planning to move into the system next year but the size and weight of the zoom lenses is ridiculous ! I expect to be using mostly M lenses.

    The quiz was fun and apparently I am a M3 man which is unreal. I haven’t shot film for eons and I said to a friend just a couple of months ago that I would never shoot film again for all the uncertainties, waiting, costs and what if I missed (very likely) the shot and never have the chance to travel back to this distant spot to shoot it again?! But thanks to your show on M Analogue cameras, I am now eagerly waiting for an M3 to arrive 😜 Thanks for sharing all the knowledge in a very entertaining show👍🏼

    I hope there will be an SL camera with the Monochrome sensor out of the Q2 Monochrome. This should take minimum
    R&D dollars and give us an Mirrorless interchangeable lens camera in L mount so we can utilize our L mount glass.
    Is this even something Leica is working on?

    It will be amusing if SL3 can go back to the SL 4 buttons layout plus front 2 buttons. That 4 button layout design is so Leica original, and easy to use. If one know his camera.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  Před 2 lety +1

      Even though we used (and liked) the four-button layout since the launch of the Leica S2 in 2009, the new unified thee button interface with long-press customizable function buttons is an improvement. Faster and more flexible in real use.

    Focus on the main important thing!
    In a video about a stylish camera the most important thing is .... correct the cam.
    If the main aspect on your video is too dark, because it is black on a black background ... raise the exposure. We do not care if your hand will be too bright or your shirt.

    Bit of an odd question perhaps . . . I've got an SL2--S (came with an M adaptor as a package deal) . . . I use four vintage R lenses I just LOVE with the SL2-S and I have a 75 SL Summicron lens I love also for the SL 'native' and autofocus experience. With the M adaptor, I am thinking of getting at least one M lens just to diversify my experience . . . . so I am looking at the M 50 mm Summilux lens. But I am also considering the 'native' SL 50 Summilux. Now, OBVIOUSLY the two are radically different experiences . . . radical weight and size differences and autofocus versus manual focus . . . of course!! . . . BUT BEYOND that . . . putting ALL of that aside . . . any thoughts / insights / wisdom on the differences between the optical capacity, image output / quality / characteristics of the M 50 mm Summilux and SL 50 mm Summilux lenses on the SL2-S?

    Is there a roadmap for future Summicron-SL lenses? Are they designing a 24 or 21? Also, in considering the Vario Elmarit 24-70 f2.8 I'm wondering if it is weather-sealed as you mention with the 24-90mm?

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  Před 2 lety +1

      Here's the link you're looking for:
      www.reddotforum.com/content/2018/09/leica-adds-three-more-sl-prime-lenses-to-roadmap/
      You can see that the 21 and 24 Summicron-SL lenses were originally slated to be launched by the end of 2020. Of course, there were global extenuating circumstances which pushed back the original timeline. Given the recent release of the of the 28mm, we are hoping that the 21 and 24 will be coming soon.
      Yes, all of the SL lenses are weather and dust sealed, including the 24-70mm f/2.8.

  • @eis-bl4xw
    @eis-bl4xw Před 2 lety

    Money without object, Noctilux-M 75mm versus the Summicron-SL 75mm? Same goes for the Summilux-M 90mm versus the Summicron-SL 90mm? Both paired with an SL2-S. Are the Summicron-SL that much better in terms of performance? Which would you guys personally take?

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  Před 2 lety +1

      The differences here are about ultimate sharpness (especially in the corners), autofocus, weather sealing, electronic aperture control and lighter weight (75/90 APO SL are 720g, 75 Noct/90 Lux are 1,055 grams), versus a more unique rendering wide open, faster maximum aperture for more light gathering, and more vignetting and soft corners for more Leica "magic". The photographic objectives you'd have with each of those sets of lenses will be different, with some overlap of course especially for portraiture. Using the 75 Noct/90 Lux really slows you down because of how precisely you need to dial in the focus, which can be a good or bad thing. Using the 75/90 APO SL still results in the highest optical performance, which is something we simply cannot say enough! Plus autofocus is really nice to have sometimes (often).

      @eis-bl4xw Před 2 lety +1

      @@RedDotForum hi again, I went to my local Leica Store. I got to try the 75 and 90 SL lenses and the Noctilux 75mm (my friend's). The shots from the summicrons are unbelievably clean and pretty. As much as it hurts for me to say it, they are indeed sharper than my 50Lux-SL (even at f2.0). Theyre on another level. I may be biased but I like the colors and bokeh from the Lux-SL.
      As for the Nocti...well, it is magical...it isnt perfect like the summicron SL lenses but it is spectacular nonetheless. Is it 10K USD extra more special? Personally, no...not right now anyway. Perhaps, some day when Im more skilled and have a better eye. The difference between the 75SL and the Nocti 75 is visible enough but that may be because I got to see them side by side.
      Wow consider me blown away and a believer of the Summicron SL lenses...not that I ever doubted it. My question now is if I should swing for the 75 or the 90.

    • @thomastuorto9929
      @thomastuorto9929 Před 2 lety

      I don't own one but, I seen another video (maybe Leica Australia ) . With the M-L adapter and an M lens mounted, you can push one of the buttons on the back (probably on the top right) while looking into the EVF & the view zooms to 100% if understood it correctly. If you own one of the other or thinking of getting into the Leica ecosystem, call the store or Leica support.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  Před 2 lety +1

      That's correct. When using an M-Adapter-L, the rear thumb joystick will magnify to 100% with a single press. You can then scroll around the image with the joystick.

    • @RedDotForum

      Yes. The camera must be powered on for the sensor to stay in place for cleaning.

    SL2 in aps-c mode, raw, with full frame lens- approx 1.5x increase- is that the same as taking a 'normal' FF image and cropping later in post? Or is there something else magical happening in the body?

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  Před 2 lety

      Nothing magical as the camera is applying a sensor crop, just as you would in post. But, importantly, the cropped image is filling the viewfinder, which makes composition much easier.
