- Zach Miller is one of the all-time legends of trail running. Unfortunately, he's been dealing with injury for the past three years, which has prevented him from racing an ultramarathon since August 2019. After a nearly three year hiatus, Zach made his triumphant return to racing, winning the Andorra by UTMB 105k, punching his ticket to UTMB Mont Blanc.

This is totally not meant as an insult, it's the highest compliment but zach reminds me of my grandma, if my grandma were a super bad ass freak of an athlete. It's just something about his energy.
2 of my favorites in one video? Yes please! Zach has always been and is one of my inspirations…when I don’t think I have anything left to give. Thinking of him and how he runs reminds me that there is always more to give. And you Dylan…you are a world class athlete that seems like a genuinely world class person (as does Zach). 2 athletes that are head and shoulders above the field but make it easy to root for them! Well done boyz!
Appreciate that so much, Eric! So good to catch up with Zach and see him back on top. 😄
So keep in mind I'm a total amature and really don't have any idea what I'm talking about but that training method of Francua (Sorry about the spelling) I think what that does is gives his body time to really heal. He goes hard out for a few week(s) and then basically shuts it down for a week or two. I actually started doing that about 2 years ago and it's been great. I used to think "you have to run every day" but now I take a week off every 5-6 weeks and just focus on laying around and eating healthy and I have never felt better. The other thing I do now is take a mandatory 2 week full break once per year. I pick the time on the calendar and just lay on the couch for 2 weeks. Think of the time you miss during an injury. A week (or 2 weeks) here or there is nothing. Awesome POD by the way. I love Zach so much and can't wait to see him return to UTMB this year. Going to be so fun.
I am delighted with your empathy Dylan and compassion for others, thank you also for this great guest
This is such a great conversation. Thankyou for being vulnerable, Zach. Injuries are often not talked about, or just skimmed over with sponsored athletes and it often gives the impression that they are invincible. I have struggled with injury for a year and have reached the point that Zach mentions of just praying and asking for help, and have felt so defeated and have weekly thoughts of just giving up on running. Then you have the sadness that comes with that knowing that you are going to give up something that brings you so much happiness. It's very inspirational and has given me hope to know that you can recover with perseverance and support. Thankyou for this conversation
Thanks, Anna-Lisa! I hope you continue to recover and persevere.
In May last year, I ran a 24 hour trail ultra in Maryland. Being a Pennsylvania lad myself, I wore my "Run PA" hat all day. (Also of note: I had/have a mustache and am of the short king/sparkplug body type.)
Because of those similarities, throughout the day, several people stopped and confused me for Zach (I know, humble brag much?). With that also came the questions of, "I thought you were retired/injured! What are you doing here?"
After hearing this podcast, I realized the immense pressure I would have felt if I were, indeed, the legendary Zach Miller. I can't imagine what it would be like to be constantly in the spotlight as a sponsored athlete, and one of the best in the sport at that, and to not simply heal and recover at my own pace without constant scrutiny.
All that is to say, glad to have you back, champ. 💪🍻
Wow, thank Carl! So true.
Great convo! I’m dealing with months long injury right now and it’s such a good reminder to trust the process and be patient. Totally relate to being sick of talking about it and wanting to DO something about it.
Good luck, Evan! Thanks for watching.
Amazing man! Can’t wait to see your next races and Congrats on your Top 5 UTMB finish, Zach! Your fans here in the Philippines. 🙌🏼🏃🏻
Thanks Mr. Bowman. Great interrview. Love Zach.
Thanks, Matt!
Thanks for curating this, Dylan. Keep hammering!!
Thanks Zak!
What a great athlete! Ever inspired since I witnessed his grit in 2016 scrambling down to Vallorcine in so much pain but determined to reach the UTMB finish line. That same year on Thursday night he was so kind to accept chatting for a while with me at the restaurant although he was with the whole Nike trail team.
Wishing all the best to Zach for this year race, will be cheering there for Sage and Zach! Both so inspiring journey in the last 2 years. Come on guys 🌶️🚀💣
That 2016 race was amazing! Thanks, Stephane!
@@Freetrail Another great interview Dylan!
Such an awesome conversation between two awesome personalities. Love the genuineness right through all of this. So good. Love hearing Zach talk about his spirituality as well. Such a great dialogue... RESPECT 🙏🏼❤️
Love zachs energy!
I love the you don’t see excerpt.
Much love from Finland! Really loved this episode! Thanks to you both! Zach es numero uno!
Great stream!
Thanks!
Such an inspiration, didn't take pain killer to endure the pain......Can't imagine.
Is it just me or is Dylan getting better and better at interviewing? Keep up the good work dude!
Thank you!!
Apart from cutting his guests responses mid-phrase or liking to hear himself talk. He has learned that it's about letting the guest speak and not all about his headspace.
I am also from Lancaster also and we froze corn every year too 🌽 ✌

Great conversation. The pancakes in Silverton tasted great!
Epic convo. Really appreciated his sharing of his faith and practice. Good stuff Zach!!! Thanks Dylan!
Foot pain is so frustrating. I’ve been running on PF and Achilles tendinitis for a while. It’s such a slow process that it gets mentally challenging
One thing I dislike about this episode; it should have been an hour longer.
"Did you feel like a loss of identity...?" Not every athlete is wrapped up in their own ego and fixated on only one aspect of their life to the detriment of a healthy, well-rounded personality. This interviewer wouldn't understand that balance.
