His family should know that even though they can have good days where they seem like their old self. They will never go back to normal. Eventually, he will have to make the decision to place his mom in a facility where she can receive 24 hour supervision.

I understand that caring for a relative with dementia as a kid was probably traumatic and potentially having to help do it again would be difficult, but this is your husband's parent, so I think they could've come up with a better plan. Instead, she dipped out. It seemed like a sincere case of values not aligning until she mentioned abandoning her kid at the first sign of issues. Now its a pattern, it seems like what ACTUALLY happened was that OP ran away at the first sign on trouble in the relationship. Especially because she is soooo over the top with her comments about "doing whats right for my kid." It seems like she's trying wayyy too hard to defend herself there. Also, let's assume that the husband is a good person... His comment to the kid about mom not wanting to take care of grandma was the honest truth, although a bit blunt. It seems like he's hurt by OP's actions and was just a little too honest with the kid.
