    Learn Why Illustrator is Better than Photoshop for Logo Design and Text Layout for Packaging Design, Posters, Brochures. Learn to Beat Your Addiction to Photoshop and Make the Switch to Illustrator.
    Note: There are many ways to achieve the same highlight and shadow bevel effect from outlined text. Others include Pathfinder/Trim and Pathfinder/Knockout Back. The method in the video is kind of a clunky way to do it but I just keep doing it out of habit. Whatever works for you is fine, experiment and have fun.
    See the tutorial on my blog: www.claytowne.c...
    Or download the companion Illustrator editable PDF file: www.claytowne.c...
    See real world examples of these techniques in my product package design portfolio: www.claytowne.c...
    Tech Specs for people who are into this stuff:
    I use a Wacom Intuos 4 medium size tablet. If you are a serious artist you MUST have a tablet. At the very least get a Wacom Bamboo. They're like $50. I'm running a custom rig that I built myself back in 2009. It's a Windows 7 64 bit box with a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard. It's got 12 GB Corsair DDR3 RAM, a Pentium i7 920 CPU, a Nvida GeForce GTX 280 graphic card, six WD Caviar Black 1TB drives in a RAID 1 configuration. My OS and programs are on one RAID array, and the other two RAID arrays hold my files. I also have two RAID 1 external drives for additional backups. Rounding out the system is a Corsair XT 750 power supply, two 1000 watt UPS backups, a USB 3 PCI Express card, an eSATA PCI express card (I ran out of SATA ports with so many hard drives) a HD Pro Logitec webcam and a pair of DVD burners.
    There are a lot of excellent ink and color tutorials on the web, so what is different about this tutorial?
    1. Real time. Unlike those speed drawing tutorials that blow your mind but teach you nothing, this one is a true speed drawing tutorial as it's in real time. No cuts and no sped up sections to hide the true time it takes.
    2. Learn a simple and easy technique for making text look cool in Illustrator.
    3. Vector. In the print industry vector rules the roost so those Photoshop text tutorials aren't very helpful for someone who's primary concern is clean reproduction in all mediums including brochures, t-shirts, posters, trade show booths, video and packaging.
    These methods are limitless in there application and manipulation so with mixing and matching a few basic techniques you can create an infinite number of possibilities.
    These techniques look particularly good on logos, packages, posters, banners, and brochures.

    I got my first computer in 1998 so that was my first introduction to the entire digital art world. I won a scholarship in high school (I won the nation portfolio division in the Scholastic Art Competition) to the art college of my choice in 1984. I went to the Colorado Institute of Art for year and then dropped out because I was frustrated with the program. This means sometimes, for good or bad, I do things differently than people who went to school to learn these programs.

    Clay, you are a fantastic teacher. Your style is personal and engaging but also clear and concise. I like the fact that it's "never good enough until it is"...from a fellow perfectionist. Most appreciated is your clear enunciation and recording of the dialogue. I just learned a couple new tricks--thank you.

    You can if you like. I mainly use Photoshop for web but will create certain elements in Illustrator and then cut and paste them into my Photoshop layout. Like the header on my Beats Digging Ditches Dot Com website header was done in Illustrator.

  • @claybutler
    @claybutler  Před 11 lety

    Simpler is harder because every line counts for so much more. I would recommend that you choose your fonts carefully and then do something with the letters to give them a brand appropriate twist. Like the middle cross bar on a capital "E" could be manipulated into a leaf shape. Something very subtle. That's an option for a nature/natural bases company. But you'll probably blast though at least 2000 fonts just to find a few respectable capital letters that look good together.

    I just eyeballed it. An easy way to do it is to activate Smart Guides ( View > Smart Guides) and that will guide you to the middle. I'm sure there must be another way, but that's how I do it if I'm concerned about it being perfectly bisected.

  • @claybutler
    @claybutler  Před 11 lety +2

    InDesign is a pretty lousy program for anything creative. It's text abilities are very limited. That's why no one uses it for anything but catalogs. Designers usually use Illustrator for logos, posters, postcards, book covers...anything that requires more than basic layout.

    hey Clay thanks for the tutorial. Can I ask a specific question? When you were adding anchor points to the rectangle shape, you were just eyeballing. If I wanted to add anchor point at a perfect midpoint is there an easy way to do it? On top of my head I could think of subtracting the two Y positions, adds an anchor point, then assigns the Y position based from the subtraction's result to the new anchor point so it would be perfectly in the middle. But that's really tedious...

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 8 lety

      So, when working always make sure you have the Appearance Pallet open ( Window > Appearance). In the appearance pallet you can see all the stokes and fills and effects you have for any selected object. Since I already had some good gradients and strokes created from my lettering, I selected the lettering, then selected one of the appearances that I like, and then dragged that over to the box shape I had just created. Instant transference of the selected appearance to the new box. You can do that will anything in the appearance pallet.

    Hey Clay, I'm a fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl and I'm still learning the many facets of Illustrator.... Where you can't fly by the seat of your pants at all! LOL I'm loving this video, but I'm finding that when I follow the steps, it doesn't always work. For example. I tried to do what you do above EXACTLY. The first thing that goes wrong, is when I try to change the color of my text, it stays black. (this doesn't always happen, but sometimes it does) So I got frustrated with that part and I thought I'd just move on and learn how to use the knife tool to make the line through the word. After I created the outlines and had my text selected, i chose the knife tool and succeeded to draw about 9 squares near the word with one swoop. No line through the text. I think I must have something set up improperly for it not to follow orders. Ack! Love it, but I get so frustrated sometimes. What am I doing wrong with this Knife tool? Thank you! Stephanie

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 10 lety

      To add a new fill color go to the Appearance Pallet, clink on the little window expander thing on the top right, and select "add new fill". You can then do what you want with it. For the other issue, you are probably using the slice tool (which is for web design) and not the knife tool.

      My favorite way is to drag the effects from the Appearance Pallet to the object you want to take on those effects. Just select the very top level appearance on the pallet and it will drag the entire list of effect over. You can drag just about anything, Swatches and Brushes too. Boom, instant change.

    And then we discover InDesign and realize, wow, Illustrator is really not for layout. Illustrator is for illustrating :) Both photoshop and Illustrator are for creating graphic assets for your layouts, but illustrator really shouldn't be used to create a layout. Utilize the whole package kids, you are paying out the ear for it :)

    • @claybutler
      @claybutler  Před 7 lety

      Correct but I'd still never use InDesign for a logo, cool text of any kind, or simple layouts like brochures, postcards, banners and business cards. It's way too clunky and limited when you want to be clever. And like you said, you'd be offloading all the cool assets creation onto Illustrator or Photoshop anyway. It's great for catalogs though. Anything that has multiple pages, InDesign shines. But for smaller collateral (one and two sided documents), InDesign is a bit too clumsy in my opinion and adds an unnecessary third step that Illustrator can complete just fine alone.

    Nice work. I've been trying to get an etch look as if engraving into metal or stone or some other object, but can't seem to get the same effect as if I use Photoshop. Any suggestions?

      If you don't need it to be vector, Photoshop is superior for that etched look into wood or steel. I recently did a logo that needed a natural wood background with shapes embossed into the wood and the lettering burned in like a branding iron. Photoshop was the only way to pull off a photo realistic look. So I set up the file at two feet across at 600 dpi just to make sure we could blow it up the size of a trade show booth no problem. Of course the very first thing the box printer asked was "where is the vector file?". It really rare I use PS to do logo/layout/print work but sometime you have no choice. You may be able to do it in Illustrator though. Download some vector metal patterns. Using masking, multiple layers, shadow effects, transparency effects ( multiply, color burn, etc) you could probable get something that looks pretty awesome and keeps all the advantages of vector.

      I'll play around with it. I've yet to see anything within Illustrator that conveys an etched look with text. Just thought and hoped maybe you were able to pull this off. I just love vector over pixels.
