Battle of Britain Dogfight - Spitfires clash with He-111 Bombers! IL-2 Sturmovik Historic Flight Sim
Vložit
- čas přidán 23. 04. 2020
- This video follows a historical simulation of an RAF pilots experience flying the Spitfire in the Battle of Britain. These Spitfires are scrambled to intercept German He-111 bombers and Bf-109 fighters of the German Luftwaffe. This video was made using the combat flight simulator IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles series (Kuban, Stalingrad, Bodenplatte, Moscow).

That HE-111 crew member might have pulled his rip cord a bit on the tardy side!
Splat!
I guess the Bf-109s were sightseeing during the battle.
Maybe they were avoiding a fight since, being in E-model 109s, which are true to the Battle of Britain time period, they were outclassed by the late model Spitfire (IX's?), which came much later than the Battle of Britain.
Andrew Kessel do you know anything about the bf109 F-1?
PedroMBelite I know enough to know that the F-1 doesn’t have the supporting spars on the horizontal stabilizers whereas the E models do. Go to m.czcams.com/video/njW53PAqnm4/video.html and you’ll see that these 109s are clearly E models.
@@amkessel2014 Mk IX's wouldn't be in this battle either. I think they're from 1943-ish. BoB Spitfires would be Mk. Is and Mk. IIs.

I loved this video, I like it when you upload this type of videos like missions or bombings, I love it, keep it up ...
Very cool! I enjoyed the multiple angles of the action
Stunningly beautiful video. Realistic depictions. Couple of oversights, like the missing BF109s' but perhaps you'll do some follow-ups on the same theme.
Very nice stuff.
Cheers.
Thanks for posting, just a historical note, during the Battle of Britain (1940) RAF was using Spitfire Mk I's (armed with 8x .303 guns) not the Mk IX's (twin radiators, 2 x 20mm Hispano Suiza cannons and 2 x .50 cal guns) as shown.
I was just about to say they were a late variant and not mark 1's
The game doesnt have the Mk 1 sadly
Also, the camo color-scheme is wrong... Spits in 1940 would have had a brown/green pattern, not gray/green one.
I agree with all the above, MK IX . Cheers
With one notable exception: 19 Squadron had two 20 mm guns (Mk IB) during August of 1940. The results were so abysmal, by September, 8 gun Mk Is had replaced them.
You're work is outstanding.....Thank You.

AFAIK this is new damage model
That poor bastard's parachute opened *after* he hit the ground.

Brilliant camera work. Shame about the wreckage!
Spitfire Vb wasn't around in the Battle of Britain, but very nice video anyway.
tommi atkins Hopefully we see the Hurricane soon enough so ppl can make BoB scenarios :)
It's a mk IXe
@@Riccardo_Silva It is. I only glanced at the fishtail pipes, I just went by the cannon and the merlin. Cheers.
I mean the BoB officially finished on the 31st of October 1940 and the Spitfire Mk Vb first saw service with the RAF in early Jan 1941, given the Spit V, limited to the first Merlin engine, isn't a giant step up from the IIb I'd say it could still feature in a late BoB situation on the new Normandy map.
@@Riccardo_Silva think it's a later marque even than that. Maybe a XVI even. Definitely an 'E' wing variant though. 👍🏻👍🏻
excellent vid. Thanks
It IS a good video. Thanks indeed for sharing!
Great video!!
Beautiful ! Exciting !
In frontal pass it's extremely difficult to aim correctly because of the sheer speed... I wouldn't waist effort, time and ammo to do it. But with 3 victories, you did very well indeed and came back alive to fight another day ! Congratulations !
Against gunners though? It is well worth it if you can. Shooting straight at the cockpit without giving their gunners much chance to engage is far better than lining up on their six at least.
@@mckseal Easy said .
It's called "armchair historian" . Just try to do it in real action... You would be lucky not to crash on the airplane you are shooting at... or the one next to it.
@@didierdenice7456 Fair call. However it was historically valid, and used widely. That said the most common approaches were the high side and low side. If we just look at youtube for sources, not including the many memoirs that describe this type of attack, we can find instructionals from the period that discuss this approach.
czcams.com/video/kRVFQs2XYy4/video.html
This is USN, so against enemy planes with few gunners. But the tactic is more worthwhile when attacking large bombers. The Germans relied on it heavily, if they could climb up in time. First pass head-on then slashing high side attacks.
Not saying that I'm skilled enough to do this in reality, mind you. Just that it is a better option in the sims than coming from right behind them and that it was used in reality. This rebuttal is mainly against the point that this was "a waste of time", if you feel that way then invest some time into practicing - it is situational but can be the best approach.
For further reading: Buchner's "Stormbird", Lipfert is also good, though mainly about fighters.
Great video! That poor german parachuting out but hits the ground hard. And that Spit at the end! At least the pilot got out. Great action.
Yeah this was awesome I want more of this please.

I enjoyed this video.
Great vid, needed the music from the Battle of Britain movie
Love it overall. Like many have said 20mm canons, but did not take away from the enjoyment of watching. I would have liked to see more 109 on Spitfire action. Good job
Yes and no...i liked the video too and watched it more a time. If i like somethig i enjoy it and bugger the rest! Well, i don't want to pose like an expert, let's pretend the action took place during the Baby Blitz! Er, early morning?

The video was great! Just a heads up Spitfires during the Battle of Britain were mostly Mk II they had -Dark Earth /Brown and Dark Green camouflage scheme three blade propeller and 4 machine guns per wing.
Actually a mixture of Mk.I, Mk.1a, Mk.II, Mk.IIb, Mk.IIb and the rare Mk.IIc (with cannons).

While the BF 109s are, correctly, Emils, the Spitfires are a much later mark than those used in the battle of Britain: I weould guess Mk IXs, also, they are armed with 2x 20mm cannons. Battle of Britain Spitfires had 8x .303 machine guns and the later "B wing" variants carried 2x 20mm cannons and 4x .303 machine guns.
Is it just me or did the bombardier at 4:39 check his charts? Also the Spitfire pilots recovery on the ground after landing in his parachute was a great touch. Authentic flight gear too. Nice job!
Spitfires are Mk.IXe Circa mid 1944 to end of WWII or Early Mk.XVI ( Packard built Merlin) introduced end 1944, Armament is 'E' type 2x20mm cannon and 2x.50 cal. MG in the inner stub. the pointed broad cord rudder was introduced early 1944 on new production aircraft but could also be retrofitted to earlier production aircraft( I've seen a broad cord rudder on a Turkish Mk.Vc ), All Mk.XVI aircraft had the broad cord rudder fitted. Good video thanks for posting.
Good job

For the Great Britain BANZAI ! 😆
the Heinkel 111 is my fave plane
I heard Sirens in the take off part
7:43 Poor guy
For history : every time a Sptifire crashed , it wasn't necessarily the end of the pilot ( if he managed to bail out , he could be in another plane the next day or even the next hours ) ; on the other hand , every time a german plane was shot the pilot and the entire crew - if it was a bomber - would be lost for Luftwaffe . Some historians say that Germany never recovered from the losses of the battle of England .
The Spitfire during the Battle of Britain was not fitted or equipped with canon. The Canon was fitted during 1941. Nice video.
La hélice de este Spitfire es de 4 palas, el de esa época su hélice era de tres palas
The bf109s: change da world, my final message, goodbye... 🛫
so close to the channel ther esould be some 109s around ;)
You know, the sister game to IL-2 Great Battles - IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, actually has accurately modeled Battle of Britain aircraft... just if anyone really wants to recreate the battle.
I read somewhere during the actual Battle of Britain Spitfire and Hurricane pilots were surprised how many .303 rounds the German bombers could take before they were shot down.

What a hell of a way to die! /x3
And he ain't gonna jump no more!"
:)
Jumping to a conclusion...
This was fun. Spitfires in the Battle of Briton had 4 Browning .303 per wing. The 2 Brownings and 20 mm weren't fitted until after that battle.
no, no, no Spit with cannons on a BOB battle .. no, no .. use "cliffs of Dover"
Later brand of Spit, in the grey and green paint scheme not in use in 1940. And of course the cannon are not authentic.
Those Spitfires look like Mk V or Mk IX, definitely not BoB Spits.
Also Cliffs of Dover has Ansons, Wellingtons, Defiants, Hurricanes, Beaufighters, Battles, Whirlwinds, Hampdens , Condors, Fulmars, Gladiators etc etc :D
A few (30) Spitfire IIc fighters with cannon were in service at the time of the Battle of Britain. They were a player flyable fighter in IL-2 Birds of Prey. The aircraft was underpowered for the extra weight of the cannons.
There were Spits with cannon in the BoB, a few mkIICs, but they had drum feeds for the cannon which was unreliable. It was one of the reasons Douglas Bader flew a MkVa with an eight machine gun wing instead of a VB or VC with Cannon and machine guns. He didn’t trust the cannon for reliability.
The Battle of Britain Spitfires had 8 machine guns not cannons
The colour scheme, roundels and lack of squadron codes are also flaws.
@Alexander Challis Yep experimented with patchy results in the MkI "B" wing, but only mass produced after the newly designed "C" wing on MkV's
WOW
Yes g if I had a decent pc i would be flying the multilayer Bob servers :)
That guy hit ass first then parachute 🪂 pops up after impacting the ground….. 😂🤣🤪😜
That's good....
I don't believe this model of Spitfire had 20 mm cannons as shown in this video. They actually had eight 303 caliber machine guns.
Quite good indeed but why spits without squadron markings?
Just a question, which is more effective? The 6x. 50 calibersof the spitfire or the two 20mm auto cannon messerschmit? Thanks you im new to ww2 topics and i still have a lot to learn.
Depends on the scenario I think. But really tough to match the damage that those 109 cannons do.
Dude....the only 20mm was brought by the 109's. Face it....the Spitfire was way undergunned for the fight. As well as the Hurricane. So, really, can you call this in anyway historical?
The 20 mm cannon was a real game changer. Hispano Suiza for the win. Decent flick, but....the fact was that the only way to shoot a 109 down was to get really close, and the hose them down. Later on, after they figured out how to keep the cannons from freezing up.... different story.
The Americans used the 50 Cal to great effect at 3-500 yards. The .303
Are those SpitIXs or XIVs? :D At least you should fly the SpitV
Funny upper wing roundels! The sim is great, the video is great and...such a GLARING inaccuracy? I repeat, funny!

A little question: at 5.43 you are close on the tails of three 111 and a fourth is a little farther. In such a position (In old Il-2 1946) one would hopelessly find himself blown out of the sky 10 times out of 10 within 2 secs. It seems the AI gunners behaviour has been duly revised! Or was it just a big piece of luck?
Probably a little of both! Haha. Also tried not to hang out there for too long.
Battle of Britain and spirtfire mk9 vs messerschmit 109 E? Interesting.
well shit, now they gotta fill in the craters. The krauts have struck a mighty blow
You know, id love to see some full video ace duels, where you just take on single ai fighters or even players in your own fighter, i haven't played this game before, but thetr should be an ai skill setting right?
Yep, of course. At this point they are working on advancing the AI skillset a little. But if you want to see aces I can play online because I basically get blown out of the sky everytime I play online lol. Those guys are really good

Now you just need to learn how to talk properly when you are having a conversation with adults, because, no kidding, as a conversationalist, you suck!
did i miss something? there is no Battle of Britain in IL2 Great Battles. Not even the Planetypes are presented in IL2 at the moment
Achtung.... Spitfeur
Check the video at time point 3.00. It shows a twin radiator and 4 gun wing. The exhaust stubs are single ejector but should be paired with 3 each side. This plane is more like a much later Mk9 with an E wing. Well made video otherwise.
Why is it that in IL-2 1946 you never get to choose to open your parachute by pressing a button on the keyboard, or whatever? IN CFS2, you could do that. It would have been nice in 4.07, considering that the damn anti-aircraft gunners always shot at you, while you're floating down in a parachute!
Did any Mk2s with the hispanos fight in BoB?
Wow didn’t know Britain had MKXI spits in 1940 🙄.
The markings on the Spitfires are totally wrong for 1940 and the Spitfire model is anachronistic. That Spitfire wasn’t adopted till well past 1942. 20mm cannons were rare on Spitfires of the 1940 period. So much for “historical” accuracy!
Whats a MKXIV Spitfire doing in the Battle of Britan?
*Sad hurricane noises*
Fucking hell wow
The Spits might wish they had cannons in the Battle of Britain ... kinda brings the thing down imho.
The Spitfire colour scheme should have been green and brown (not grey), and the wing roundels are wrong. Otherwise good effort.
