  • This video follows a historical simulation of an RAF pilots experience flying the Spitfire in the Battle of Britain. These Spitfires are scrambled to intercept German He-111 bombers and Bf-109 fighters of the German Luftwaffe. This video was made using the combat flight simulator IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles series (Kuban, Stalingrad, Bodenplatte, Moscow).

      Maybe they were avoiding a fight since, being in E-model 109s, which are true to the Battle of Britain time period, they were outclassed by the late model Spitfire (IX's?), which came much later than the Battle of Britain.

      I mean the BoB officially finished on the 31st of October 1940 and the Spitfire Mk Vb first saw service with the RAF in early Jan 1941, given the Spit V, limited to the first Merlin engine, isn't a giant step up from the IIb I'd say it could still feature in a late BoB situation on the new Normandy map.

      @@didierdenice7456 Fair call. However it was historically valid, and used widely. That said the most common approaches were the high side and low side. If we just look at youtube for sources, not including the many memoirs that describe this type of attack, we can find instructionals from the period that discuss this approach.
      czcams.com/video/kRVFQs2XYy4/video.html
      This is USN, so against enemy planes with few gunners. But the tactic is more worthwhile when attacking large bombers. The Germans relied on it heavily, if they could climb up in time. First pass head-on then slashing high side attacks.
      Not saying that I'm skilled enough to do this in reality, mind you. Just that it is a better option in the sims than coming from right behind them and that it was used in reality. This rebuttal is mainly against the point that this was "a waste of time", if you feel that way then invest some time into practicing - it is situational but can be the best approach.
      For further reading: Buchner's "Stormbird", Lipfert is also good, though mainly about fighters.

Some historians say that Germany never recovered from the losses of the battle of England .

      Depends on the scenario I think. But really tough to match the damage that those 109 cannons do.

  • @Plumpplumberbalding
    @Plumpplumberbalding Před 3 lety +1

    Dude....the only 20mm was brought by the 109's. Face it....the Spitfire was way undergunned for the fight. As well as the Hurricane. So, really, can you call this in anyway historical?
    The 20 mm cannon was a real game changer. Hispano Suiza for the win. Decent flick, but....the fact was that the only way to shoot a 109 down was to get really close, and the hose them down. Later on, after they figured out how to keep the cannons from freezing up.... different story.
    The Americans used the 50 Cal to great effect at 3-500 yards. The .303

    A little question: at 5.43 you are close on the tails of three 111 and a fourth is a little farther. In such a position (In old Il-2 1946) one would hopelessly find himself blown out of the sky 10 times out of 10 within 2 secs. It seems the AI gunners behaviour has been duly revised! Or was it just a big piece of luck?

    Check the video at time point 3.00. It shows a twin radiator and 4 gun wing. The exhaust stubs are single ejector but should be paired with 3 each side. This plane is more like a much later Mk9 with an E wing. Well made video otherwise.

    Why is it that in IL-2 1946 you never get to choose to open your parachute by pressing a button on the keyboard, or whatever? IN CFS2, you could do that. It would have been nice in 4.07, considering that the damn anti-aircraft gunners always shot at you, while you're floating down in a parachute!

    The markings on the Spitfires are totally wrong for 1940 and the Spitfire model is anachronistic. That Spitfire wasn’t adopted till well past 1942. 20mm cannons were rare on Spitfires of the 1940 period. So much for “historical” accuracy!
