If I recall correctly, many of the pilots of the 357th Fighter Group of the VIIIth USAAF were former pilots of the Royal Air Force Eagle squadron, made up from Americans who had voluntarily joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the start of the war in 1939 or later in 1940, some of them having flown and fought during the Battle of Britain in 1940. My country is forever indebted to those brave men who put their lives on the breach and defended her in her most desperate hours. England and Great Britain will never forget them or the pilots of orher nations who fought for Britain in those darkest days.

This story shows the difference of how allied airmen shot down over Japan were treated compared to those shot down over Germany. Despite accounts of airmen being beaten and some even killed by Germans, the great majority were treated well as POW'S and deceased airmen were normally buried with full military honours. In Japan, we hear, the dead airmen were trampled upon by civilians and the survivor executed. The Japanese invariably treated POW'S in the worst possible way, but this kind of treatment was just disgusting, to say the least.

The number of 'kills' claimed by bomber gunners were ridiculous, they were so over the moon high that the Luftwaffe would have been severely hampered if they were true. The real purpose of the gunners in a bomb group was to break up the ability of the German aircraft to maintain a stable attack run on the bombers. In this they were indeed highly successful - limiting the time fighters had to hit a targeted bomber to a matter of a few seconds. But in the age of Spielberg and CZcams the Luftwaffe lost scores of fighters on every single mission, after all, the Americans were near-mythical superheroes, the Germans just a clump of incompetent chumps. Cheers!

But yet a lot of the things we see on CZcams are way worse than any comment, and what we're seeing here is history.. It's like they don't want the history of WW2 to be taught. I have 5 kids and my oldest daughter who's 21 yrs old, said she had heard a little bit about WW2 in school and my other 4 were never taught a thing about the WW2 or the Civil wars. It's ashamed

Of great use would be an index of time-frames/locations where filming occurred; potentially indicating unit identification. Have always held the hope of seeing my father (yes, first generation) on film. He landed with Battery "A", 32nd Field Artillery Battalion... 18th Regimental Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division... (where he was amazingly awarded a Bronze Star w/"V") Generally, the 32nd landed mid to late afternoon, where filming would be more realistic/probable.(he died, 1964, when I was 7). Also, is there a project digitizing The landings at Gela, Sicily? (June 9, 1942); where he also participated (same unit). I have one photo of him "somewhere in France '45" as well as his WD AGO 53-55 and complete set of replacement awards and decs.

No, this really matters because many people served, and many people were wounded and tied in the battlefield. Myself included. One uncle shot down over the English Channel. When he arrived back to base, they gave all his belongings away because they thought he was dead. Another cousin Was a sailor on merchant ships and beginning of World War II you had two ships underneath one in the battle of Malta and the other one the Caribbean. The world is full of heroes. And does it really matter if Trump father never served in the army. But it does matter that he cheated stole from the people that he supposed to provide service to.
