If you notice that the pans are sticky as you open them, put them in the freezer for about 5 minutes then they should come out cleanly from the packaging

I love Roman Szmal watercolours. If you're looking for further recommendations:
    - Aureoline Hue. It's a bright yellow, but more natural than Aquarius Yellow and gorgeous in light washes.
    - Pyrrole Red.
    - Azo Red.
    - Misty Morning. A unique colour that has shades of blue-grey and purple. Can't recall the pigment info but it's a beautiful colour. Reminds me of thundery skies.
    - Lazurite (Lapis Lazuli). This is one of the more pricier paints, it's very pale and takes some building up to see it enough, but I love the texture of it and it's very reminiscent of the overcast skies we get here so often in Wales.
    - Malachite. Again a pricey colour, but a gorgeous pale mint green.
    - Green Earth.
    - French Ochre.
    - Aquarius Black. Very granulating and I love it for the texture alone. Great to add interest in mixes.
    - Przybysz's Gray. A dark gray that granulates to purple shades.
    - Nickel Titanate Yellow.
    - Ginger Red.
    - Cobalt Coelin Blue.

Thank you for swatching the masstone and dilutions separately. I hadn't realized until now how helpful that is. I think I'll do that from now on! Have a fabulous day! 🌜

I just bought a selection of Roman Szmal for the first time, too. (Thank you Jackson's for the sale...and RS for the half pans!) Of course, now I see some you chose that I want, too...but I'm going to try to wait a bit. I found the Zecchi site a little hard to navigate from the States, although after seeing your video there are colors I'd love to have. I'd happy watch any mixing video you offer, but if I had to choose it would be Roman Szmal. Thank you, Lily!

Its the first time I have seen one of your videos. I do love the colours you have chosen, and bought four of them. yes please could you do a video mixing these Roman Szmal colours, that would be great. I bought the lovely Cherry Quinacridone, I have been looking for a soft pink for ages. Its so hard to get a nice naples yellow that is not opaque and muddy looking. The small brush you are using lilly is that a winsor and newton sable brush ? Subscribed !

Thanks for this lovely swatch! I immediatly added the cherry quinacridone to my favorits list. I have the Quinacridone Maroon and maybe its the light or paper, mine looks very much more orange, and I love it! Super vibrant. All the ones named Quinacridone seems specially nice. What does that mean? Do you know? The word quinacridone I mean. Quin gold from WN is also very beautiful!
Would love to see you paint with theses Roman Szmal!

Warm greetings from the wintery Mediterranean! ❤️I think Quinacridone is the name of a synthetic/organic created family of colors that were initially used to paint cars! Thankfully they found their way to art materials like watercolors and oils and I am so happy they did because they have unrivaled qualities 😊❤️

Hi! Watching with interest..,although after getting my Rosa single pigments (and ordering a few more of their single pigments to complete my set)..I can’t imagine…or afford…yet another collection right now. Rosa’s WERE affordable for what you get, and especially for what I need them for. But looking at some of these…🤩. My ONLY issue with RS…I believe they have honey? The biggest reason for Rosa’s is they insist it’s only pigment + arabica gum. (Although..,I’m questioning that because some of them act so similar to QOR, and they have the sheen and stickyness as some of my handmade with honey). BUT, so far, they mix with my mingjiao (a glue in Asian paints to get them to sit on top of ripe (sized) paper; and absorb much slower on raw and semi ripe Xuan paper.) Mingjiao, called something else in Japanese, is what makes Kuratake paints so shiny and pliable.
Anyways, both for our Asian and western painting, I’m looking for paints, mostly single pigments, I can use for mixing..oh, I prefer transparent colors. The few paints I have with honey, don’t mix well with mingjiao and or peach sap gum, to use on Xuan. Ideally, I’d like paints that can be used for BOTH Western & Chinese painting. A lot of one of my tutors students in China, want to paint in both mediums-something we can’t do with Chinese chips (which, like Marie’s, are also suffering in quality)..you CAN get the high quality chips, but at the equiv of $35 for less than 5g..they aren’t affordable for the thousands of art students in China…but the chips also come with other issues like molding and they don’t work on Western paper…unless, of course, you’re going for a very chalky, granulated look.. I tested some new “Natural crimson” chips I got last week…yikes! 😢 They we’re trying to make up for Marie’s deterioration in all their red shades, but especially “peony red”, the supposed equiv of alizarin crimson. Most artists and professors are now using WN A Crimson.. Also, my new chips grew mold within 24hrs…something I expect from my natural gamboge..but NOT these. I spritzed them with 99% alcohol and put the plate in an airtight container. Overall..I was VERY disappointed and glad they sent it for free. One of my tutors is helping me write a review to the company…I can understand most speech and writing..but speaking or writing myself…😖🤷🏼‍♀️ I just don’t understand how..when western companies are constantly improving their paints; how these companies could be so neglectful of a 2000yr old tradition. (Even after the Spring Gala gave them a not so subtle hint). Prof Chen said it’s because they’ve shifted their marketing to the western market and expanded their lines..ie: Marie’s had sold ONLY Chinese paints until about 6years ago. I still have some of my original set from over 8yrs ago. You can’t even compare to the set I bought for my best friend last Fall, they’re so different and so bad. In the past 5 years, not only have they expanded into Western WC…acrylics, pastels, oil paints, pencils..Prof Chen sent me pictures from their Taobao (like Amaz) store showing everything from furniture, accessories..and a whole line in school supplies..in English. Obviously NOT geared to professional Asian artists anymore.
Ahh well, we WILL find alternatives! Right now, my “brushwater method” (adding mingjiao, sometimes peach sap gum, to brush water, and using single pigment western paints)..preferably with as few additives as possible, is working best and give students, artists and professors the ability to use them on either Xuan or western paper. Until traditional paint makers chose to focus on the artists and schools that made them the ONLY choice for 400 years…some western paint companies are going to get their business.
I wanted to add because a well-known Chinese American artist and teacher has switched almost exclusively to QOR. Unfortunately, there’s a huge drawback. They can’t be wet-mounted. I’m not going to write more.
Suffice it to say, the search for alternatives will continue unless or until, traditional companies get back to the basics.
Meanwhile, so far, ROSA’s is checking all the boxes…

The packaging is the worst I have ever seen for any product I have ever purchased at any time. I did put mine in the freezer overnight so the paint didn't stick. But I had trouble getting the pans out of the package--I tried using a mat knife, a screwdriver, and eventually, I gave up and handed them all to my husband, who had to resort to pliers to wrench the pans out of the plastic and cardboard corset.
Worse, the plastic they used for the pans resisted all the markers I tried to use to label the color names. I ended up having to write the names on strips of tape and sticking those to the pans. I am so angry at these paints that, after weeks of sitting on my desk, I still haven't swatched them. I had been buying full pans, cutting the paint block in half, and tamping them into half pans. This is a lot less trouble than buying the half pans in their customer-proof packaging. It's probably cheaper, too.

    • @lilymoonart
      @lilymoonart  Před 10 měsíci

Oh no! 😞I think they may need to rethink their packaging, hopefully as their halfpans are a relatively new release they will correct all the problems soon! Buying full pans is cheaper I would think and I like your idea of cutting them into two to create two halfpans! 😊

No thank you. Is rather spray my paints than scrape them from their packaging and pray the fruit flies don't make a meal out of them, and the mold that honey based paints grow... no thank you.
