I love books lying around the house. Coffee table books are like non verbal communication. Every time someone comes in my home they pick up one of my books and enjoy them. Even children! It's a must!
When there is a fabric lamp shade with a plastic protective cover and people don't remove it. 🙄
Ohhhh, that 90’s look. It was that Italian look, complete with faux walls, wine art….. brings back memories 😂😂😂 I still some things like at places like Kirkland. Wonder what we will be regretting in another 20years?
This is a good show. It’s like wearing a dress with bad accessories. Or the wrong type of shoe. Deal breakers. It’s the details that set the tone in our home. Can you imagine looking at your beautiful home and the sheets are wrinkled, phone cords across the floor in a tangle. Or if the art was too low. Its these things that make a home look so exciting and peaceful like Valentina’s. I so respect that. And what a great thing to remember today. It’s really just raising the bar by looking at our home through the eyes of a designer. We don’t want to blow it on the simple details after buying all the wonderful things we have placed in our home. Thank you for the reminder. ❤
I don’t care if people get mad at your comments. If they don’t like your decorating advice, why do they even watch your blogs? Your advice is great and haters can suck it.
You cannot always agree with people a 100 percent of the time. It is not humanly possible.
Guilty of hanging wall art a little higher than recommended. Right now, I’m adjusting it. Husband looking at me like I’m crazy. 😢😂
😅
It always cracks me up at how offended people get when I say I iron my sheets, as if I’m casting judgment on them. 😂 All I know is once you iron your sheets, you never go back. And it really doesn’t take as long as you think it will, especially if you implement a few hacks (fold the sheet in half or just do the top half 😮). There was like an outcry the last time you said you were an ironer of sheets, and I was thinking-do they not know this channel is about interior design? 😅 Even when I was into shabby chic, I ironed my sheets before strategically making them look undone, lol. 🤓
I love to iron. I iron my sheets.
I iron my sheets and pillow cases as well. My daughter and friends think I'm nuts! But I hate that just out of the dryer look.
I love to iron. I find it therapeutic. I iron my clothes, sheets, pillow cases, curtains. I don’t do towels or underwear which my sister in law does? I also have a steamer that I travel with.
Spot ON on your tips, Valentina, and I like how you’re gentle with telling us, because it may be an eye opener for someone who just didn’t look at it with a current eye. Your genuine laughter is great!!
Hei Valentina. Instead of pull backs...because we want as much daylight in as possible, I let the curtain rail run longer on both sides so the curtains cover the walls instead of the windows. Thats also tricking the eye so the window looks larger.
Those are basic tricks that all designers recommend to do, actually.
I use pull backs on our curtains for our back patio. The curtains get sucked out and caught in the door otherwise. I tried it without and function won. It's better than vertical blinds for sure! 😳
My coffee table also has art books, a sculpture, and a decorative dish.
One of the first things I had done when we moved into this house built in the 80's was change to rocker light switches. The old ones were ugly, dirty, and dated the whole house.
There were a lot of them. Took the electrician 2 days. Worth ever penny! Great advice!!
Your definitely spot on with these “dont’s.” I just don’t understand when people buy really cheap looking prints and hang them practically at ceiling height. Or those really small floating shelves and hang one below the other slightly off angle and fill them with small junkie looking knick knacks. And don’t get me started on those tacky word signs. 🤦🏻♀️ I love your style, humour and candour Valentina.
Preach!
If I see the Tom Ford coffee table book one more again I will set the whole room on fire
Wow. I have what I can afford and I like. Most of these aren't mistakes. They're preferences.
@@3Julzs same here! So many home decor channels have that book, like they they all have to run out and get it whenever they see it on someone’s channel.
I was OBSESSED with ivy in the late 90's. Every other thing in my house had the ivy motif. 🤣
@MCourt76> Me Too!! I've gotten rid of all of it now of course, but I do still have and use everyday, my Correl Ware "Ivy" dishes😂🤣😂
All of these are very simple changes! I actually had one faux plant on top of my kitchen cabinets in the corner that had been there for years (not ivy) but when we recently painted, I got rid of it. Just that one little change and it looks so much more current. It wasn't even ugly....but to me taking it away made a big difference. IMO the top of cabinets don't need stuff....unless of course you like it, then that's all that matters.
Marie Kondo says it’s important to have things in your life that spark JOY. For me, Valentina Fussel sparks JOY ❤
I agree on everything. I put big crystals on my coffee tables and have my remote in an Ikea remote holder.
On point with it all! Especially an empty coffee table.
I am obsessed with ironing and steaming my clothes, linen napkins and curtains, pillow cases etc. It just feels so much better and people think I’m OCD but I’m far from that. It’s something I don’t compromise on.
Haha V! I just took down my Ivy today because you said it was outdated. I agree. I just didn't realize it. And now I'm ordering some faux Hydrangeas ❤ for my new vase from Afloral! We just built a new house and if it wasn't for you, I probably would have decorated the Same as my old house. Thank you for all the insights!
Too funny, I got rid of ALL the wine pictures. I wish I could post a pic of them. Thanks for this great video! Lots of good ideas.
I like the the tie backs! They're just practical to me🤷🏾♀️
I don't know anyone would get offended. Its like having a dated hairstyle or dated clothes. Nothing lasts forever in terms of it looking fresh and current. Even if you like antiques or vintage, if your whole house is that it looks old and dated. So I appreciate these tips and tricks since sometimes you get so used to seeing something its like you're oblivious to it being so past its prime or just looks really bad. Great tips and if you don't want to get rid of things maybe figure out how to upcycle.
Agree - it's hard to notice your things are dated sometimes. I take photos and then look at my rooms when I am at a different location. Much more noticeable then.
You just cracked me up. I got a new coffee table last week, lived with it for a few days to make it feel at home, and this week's project was to find the right tchotckes for it.
Quit with the WINEING all ready! Seriously, toss the winey stuff! 🍇🍷 Super adorable when you realized what you said! XO
For me, I figured out that it was my popcorn ceilings! After 19 years, it's also discolored. I'm currently sanding it off, then I will paint the ceiling and hopefully add crown molding. Pray for me as I work through this process!
You with cords and fruit stickers!!! 🤣🤣 I agree but.. 🤣🤣
My cat thinks she's embellishing my coffee table. I keep telling her no. She insists she does.
Just decorate the way that makes u happy! Life is too short! Enjoy!
I always match light switches to wall paint color.
I don’t mind ironing either. Makes such a difference.
❤️ you V for posting this! One phrase to add: “Let it go, let it go!” 🤣
Hi Valentina, I love your energy, personality, and style! You always have your beautiful hair down, but you look lovely with it up in a pony too!
I like your tips! That said, you have a mirror over the fireplace, which is a total don't, IMHO. What can be seen is your stairs and ceiling fan. I do like a simplified mantle, tho.
Love you Valentina thanks for bringing joy to my life watching your videos and that laugh
Hanging things at the proper height in our house is a massive challenge. i'm 4'11", so there's that, and he hubs tends to put things too high (and just wants to hang it and go, no do-agains). Great tip on the electrical; our next house is from the early 70s, and i don't know when the electrical was last checked, so that's definitely on the to-do list. Fab video, as always 🙂
One of the main goals of house decoration is create a harmonious, and inviting space. These tips can help us achieve it. ✨😉
I agree with all the things you mentioned. Although, I can see why someone may need to still use the tie backs. One thing I personally am tired of seeing is initials on decor. Love your videos ❤️ Angela
I love my curtain tiebacks! I have a gorgeous set from Anthropologie that purposefully look vintage, but I agree that the basic-looking ones are outdated
With a heavier curtain/drapes I have to use them (Really one on each set) because the drapes cover my forced heating vents.😩
Great decorating advice. I love love love your sense humor. ❤
Yes.
Open the curtains , or close them. Smooth verticals.
Also out take down all those light blocking valances and swags.
100% Valentina! Right on! I’m happy to say I have not done any of these mistakes for a very long time!
I cant wait to one day live in our own house because right now we live with my mother in law (idk if it’s just an Asian thing where there’s multi generations in one household) but you can definitely tell who has decorated what rooms. And it drives me crazy. Like she loves the look of luxury, but the things she ends up buying hinders the potential of what she wants because someone gave her something and she can’t say no. So then she’s obligated to display it. Lol you probably didn’t expect my comment to be like a therapy session. Should I give my copay to Jack? 😂
😂
You are wonderful. Thank you for sharing your brilliance!
I love books 📖 on the coffee table.
Your tips are always spot on. Love your videos.
I prefer to leave my coffee table empty. But lately I’m starting to put things on it. 😂 I’m more of a minimalist so is hard to see things on a surface
Ha! Got me! I have one wine art because I love wine! ( I agree it is slightly outdated) Could you ask Jack where I should ship it?
Excellent content V! It never crosses my mind but I’ll seriously consider your tip about curtain pull-backs. I love all of your tips today. You look very pretty as always. Keep up the good work! ❤
I ran and unhooked the curtain pullbacks! 🤣🥴
I love to wash my sheets every week and iron them. Love how they look so crisp!
🤣 🤣
Thank you for the “A HA” moment. I installed new linen panels that I had purchased to upgrade my bedroom window treatments a few months ago. I just couldn’t get the tie backs (that match the valances I had made long ago) to look right. After watching your video, I immediately went in and removed the tie backs altogether and my world was right again. Thank you!!
I just took everything from my top cabinets!! I didn’t have wine or olive oil but I had greens , I think you are right, now you don’t really put things there!!
Thanks for all your decorating tip’s
Agree with all tips!! Want to know where u got the white ILET SUN DRESS???? Perfect for me in pensacola fl. Can u reply please!!! Thanks 👍
Love your tips...and delivery!
You are right on the mark, Valentina. Thank you.
I can't agree more with these dated items. One question however, will you share where yu purchased that beautiful shell shaped coffee table bowl. Gorgeous!
Hai Valentina , I love your tips a lot. Could you please share where you bought that beautiful marble bowl .❤
I agree with you on all! Love the music at the end!😊
I luv how you decorate the best!!
Terrific tips V!!! Blessings!!!
aaaww u killed me with the Ironing ha! :) I despise it :) can't wait for the Ironing robots :)
Good morning could you please share where the bathroom mirrors are from?? I am renovating my kids bathroom and I just stumbled upon your this video and loved the mirrors . Hope I can get the info about mirror in right time . Thank you so much for all the videos and always positive 😊
I keep books on my coffee table. I am in a Paris phase, so I have books on Paris and France out. It is a lovely thing to do.
Thank you for another great decorating video. You are so graceful with any criticisms of style or personal taste. I studied photography decades ago and still have some of the art work framed and on my walls. I really believe what you hang on your walls should truly move you. As you so nicely stated, wine art has to go!!!!
Thanks so much. Electric cords trip me up ( haha) all the time. How do you manage the lamps on your sofa table and floor lamps next to your sofa? Also some back to basics.. every day things like tissue boxes and magazine storage..help!
Just built open concept and went with floor outlets that fold down to match flooring when not in use.
Agreed! I don't iron pillowcases though as they crease once you've slept on them, oh my the creasing my husband causes when he props up against his pillow 😫 x
Yes! Everything you said is the truth.
Regarding drapery pullbacks ... they can be an asset if hung at the right height. When trying to create rhythm for items at the same height around the room, tiebacks can be used to draw the eye to the right eye level on the side of a room that doesn't have anything else to fit the need. Perhaps align to the height of the backs of dining chairs or align with an architectural feature if nothing else is available. Generally I found other ways to get that rhythm in my home, but I would not be mad if I saw it in someone else's.
New subscriber I like this video but your laugh you made me smile everytime with you I feel your positive energie. Greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina
The biggest decor mistake I've made is having things with sharp angles that you have to walk around a lot - like coffee tables or a platform bed.
I prefer softer, rounded edges over constant bruises & cuts.
The same goes for pulls (push-pop latches FTW!) on cabinets - especially the one with hard edges that can kill or severely injure you if you happen to fall & hit your head on the way down - especially where kids are involved.
I really enjoy these videos and usually agree with all your points. The "winey art" is sadly still for sale in and around Napa and Sonoma.
I don't think there is one electrician out there that will tell you that you have to have your switches updated if they were done in the nineties...LOL! As for the plates, why? Most ppl follow trends, and are changing over to the gigantic white modern switches and plates. Some of us think they are an eyesore. Why one earth would we make larger something like a light switch? I live in a 1930's English cottage, I kept the old toggle, and changed all my switch plates to brass. I'm not sure why there are so many of these "don't do this" kind of design videos out there. There are design rules, that is for sure, however, they always lose me when they go beyond that, into what is personal preference.
Wonderful and informative. Is there a link to where you bought your coffee table? As well, the reclining sculpture behind sofa. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing all this tips
Hi Valentina! I NEED your opinion on my bedroom redo!!! I have an off white upholstered bed and black dressers. Will it look ok to put the IKEA Pax Bergsbo dark gray in my bedroom. The walls will be a light crème. I’m debating putting them on a white wall or painting that wall gray to match but it is not a focal wall. Or should I just go with the white PAX? I hope you can help me!!!!!
I agree on every point except painting the electrical switches/covers. I really dislike painted covers and (back in the day) wall papered covers. LOL I am 100% on board with buying new and updating for safety with looks being a benefit.
I like those type of videos very very funny yet educational 😂 revive them taste Ms. V
Superbbbbbbb
Loved ur ideas n surprised to have same thinking to your idea
Just catching up on some videos and loved this one too … so looking around kitchen (cabinets to ceiling so not a problem there😅) but I see some small art over the doorway to dining room and some decanters with beans layered with different types (oh yes, you read that right 😮) and probably have had for 20 years so in the trash they went (kept the great jars) .. goodness what a difference with a few simple items removed …❤
Great tips.... Thank you Valentina.
Totally agree about the pullbacks, for drapery…especially the matching fabric ones. I think it’s an outdated look.
Hi Valentina, I nodded this time, I guess I am guilty of not steaming things, like the table cloth when I have dinner guests... 😅 I would love a video on how to "dress" the coffee table.
great advice👍please tell me where to buy planters just like the grey one u have for the fig tree ( options that are not expensive)
Valentina I loved this video and was laughing just as much as you were while talking about the wine art😂 I hate to see those in people's home. It reminds me of the big fork and spoon that people hang in their kitchen.
Hi Valentina … luv your content as always it truly is very educational for those they want to learn how to upgrade our homes. My question is can you give some tips and tricks in the kitchen on how to fill in that ugly space above the cabinets. I’m planning to do a kitchen remodel in the next 2 years but in the meantime I have to work with what I have. In this video you show kitchens with the old school ivy and wine bottles above the cabinets but you never said unless I missed it what can be done in place of that! I know back in the day people did that to fill in that space. BTW I never care for that old school trend😆.. I’m definitely interested to know or maybe you can give us some context only that🧡🤩… Thanks for sharing!
Pinterest has a lot of ideas too, I believe she suggested looking on Pinterest before.
Can you extend the cabinets to the ceiling? Ours go to the ceiling.
I think in the video, she mentioned just leaving that space blank if it has to be there! But maybe there are some good options.
I love tassel tie backs (or pull backs). I think it gives a classic, timeless look, not dated. It’s more traditional while straight down curtains is more modern, contemporary decor. I personally don’t like modern or contemporary, but that doesn’t mean dated. If you see any of the grand manor homes you often will see pull backs, because the style is more traditional. Even if you have a modest small house or apartment, you can still decorate it like a grand manor house.
My coffee table is definitely too plain. I only have a tray with a vase and greenery. One of my dogs thought the coffee table books would be good to nibble on during her puppy stage, but I think she’s mellowed out enough and I should try again. 🙂
Same. My coffee table is bare. My kids use it daily after school to play on their laptops and it’s where they eat snacks so I just don’t bother. Definitely wish I could dress it up a bit!
Where did you get that black marble bowl ? On the coffee table. It’s beautiful !!❤
I have a Lego grand piano, that my son helped me put together, with moving keys that plays music on my coffee table, Mad et Len (thanks to Valentina’s influence😂),an all black and white family photo book I custom ordered, and a stack of drink coasters. So yes, people have stuff on their coffee tables. 😂 Also, can you please make a video on different ways to decorate a mantle?
Thank you for your inspiration
Omg I’m guilty of the curtain pull backs 😮, I’m going to take it down and see if I like it. 😊
For some reason the kitchen decoration from the 90s you have in minute 19:47 is so nostalgic :).
They’ll be back “in style,” and people will be scouring the resale shops for vintage items rather than replicas. People will be aghast that anyone would have painted over or thrown out that beautiful decor. 😂
Any ideas for decorating a coffee table when you have small children who will make off with anything within reach? All I can think of is a bowl of nice looking wood blocks that the kids can play with and put them back on the coffee table when they’re done
I raised 3 boys and your idea of unique wood blocks is a great one. You could even put things like Legos or Hot Wheels in rattan or wood display boxes with lids that look great but are less breakable - they clean up quick and conceal toys nicely. I was always looking for unusual things that my kids enjoyed - it was fun to have unique things that were different than what all their friends had.
I had five kids in 7 years and believe it or not, I never had to keep anything off of the table. I just let them touch things but taught them to be careful and I never had an issue.
I also, taught my two boys not to mess with the items on the living room coffee table. I only had one issue ever and it was the neighbors 2 year old who took a Swarovski crystal swan for a swim, lol. In the family room, I still to this day, just keep a decorative tray with books, a small candle and bud vase. It is cute, also holds the remotes and my boys enjoyed reading the books, mostly travel books and homedecor with beautiful photos. I love the tray because it is easily moved and all my friends and family who visit usually end up enjoying a book or two during their stay.
Decorative Tic-Tac-Toe or Checkers.
Spot on love this advice 👏
the coffee books - im still confused about them. im 25 and i put flowers in my coffee table and coffee 😂
Yes! On all your suggestions! 💯
I do like the tie back bars to use when it is breezy and I want my windows open. Otherwise they are hidden :D
My house was built in 1902 and the windows are original. It has the crown molding around them, so we have to use the curtain backs because there is not enough width space to open the curtains fully otherwise and blinds would give us zero privacy. Luckily, I love a traditional style, so it works for the house.
I think with beautiful older homes, it’s great to go with more vintage or traditional styles. I think those styles are harder to pull off in a new build!
Regardless of how beautiful ur home is artwork too high ruins everything
Love your home!! Beautiful 😍 Question... Are you supposed to decorate on top of kitchen cabinets? If you do, what is the best decor to use and how much lol
I would say nothing that will collect dust or look grimey. If you have matching baskets and need storage for seldom used things that would make sense to me.
@@HR-re6mr I collect a lot of dust up there! It does get grimey too because of the stove and microwave. I hesitate putting anything up there unless it's something that is washable. Like a decor piece covered with a cloche.
Over the cabinet accent lighting looks nice, too.
Nothing. Decor on top of cupboards seems so 80s-90s to me. Hidden strip lights would show off the walls/ceiling better w/a more modern look.
@@fhlfssrecognition love this idea!
