  • Colorado Schools are failing. This video is just one story of many where schools would rather do anything but teach our children how to read and write. Harrison School District 2 is the topic of my video today.
District 2 wants to spend $6 million to build 20 tiny homes (That’s $300,000 for the poor souls who attended District 2 and can’t do math). These are going to be 325 square foot units that they can rent to teachers for $825/month. However, 75% of their students are failing math according to 2023 CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success) and 60% of them are failing when it comes to reading and writing. Many of these kids live below the poverty line and education is their best chance at a vbrighter future. The superintendent of this district is Wendy Birhanzel and ultimately she is responsible for the success of her students. Her focus is on building tiny homes for teachers though, not improving test scores.

The problem in these situations is more about students coming from dysfunctional families which fail to support their children's education, schools and teachers.

Thanks for saying something. I have a friend who just left his high school history teaching job and his stories are tough to believe. District 2 had 75% of their 3rd graders proficient or advanced in reading in 2014. 55% were proficient or advanced in writing back 10 years ago. Now these two scores are lumped together and only 40% are proficient in English. If you value education, send your kids to a school that also values education. There will be new standards in the coming years and I am expecting the standards to be lowered so proficiency looks like it's improving.

More funding doesn't work either. My school where I worked for 30 years in an inner-city neighborhood was extremely well funded.

The new proposal being worked on in Colorado will cost $474 million. We have increased student funding by almost 50% over the last 10 years and have seen reading and writing scores fall by 30+ percent over that time. This isn't specific to Colorado either. People have to be more involved in their child's education or they will get left behind.

Why do you think so many teachers want to leave their jobs?

Colorado imploded after becoming the first ones to legalize recreational weed. A million weirdos moved in. The entire state is now manitou/boulder.
