BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO EDITING WITH LIGHTROOM - My Process How To Create Great Black and White Edits

  • In this black and white photo editing tutorial, I share my method in Adobe Lightroom for processing impactful black and white images. We take a colour photo and I walk you through all of the steps I take to ensure a quality black and white conversion.
    In Lightroom we look at the basic panel and the key adjustments needed to bring your black and whites to life. We explore the benefits of the contrast, clarity and dehaze sliders for use in a strong black and white conversion. We then delve into how changing the luminosity values for individual colours can enhance your image and how it gives you greater creative opportunities.
    From here I show you how I work with local adjustments within Lightroom to fine-tune the black and white to my personal vision, and lead the viewer's eye through the photo. In this case dead centre towards the mist and fog further down the path.
    I demonstrate how to use curves to control the contrast and to give a slightly vintage/faded look to the black and white process. And the very last piece of the puzzle for me is a quick finesse using Luminar 4 as a plugin. Here's a link to the software and if you want to get a copy you're welcome to use the code ATSKY10 for a $10 discount at the checkout. bit.ly/2vxUi2b_Luminar4

    It's a 33 minute video, but my hope is that if you stay with me until the end you'll learn some new techniques to improve your own black and white editing.
    Thank you for your time watching. If you've got any tips you'd like to share please feel free to leave them in the comments. :)

    One of the best tutorials I’ve seen where the photographer works through each decision and shows all of the effects of different sliders but how you evaluate it’s impact on the image you are looking to achieve

      @@AnthonyTurnham I did - I ended up skipping the OS X App Store and purchasing directly from Skylum. Luminar 4.2 is markedly better than 4.1, though the export speed is still far slower than I expected. Still a great editor, though.

    Interesting that you mentioned double clicking on the blobby arrow on the adjustment lines (or whatever they are called) but didn't mention that the same hack works if you double click on the name of the adjustment as that is a bigger target...

    I take my photos in black and white. I’m interested in your option as a professional photographer why you don’t shoot your photos in black and white from the start ? You said at the start of this video i knew this was going to be a black and white photography. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪 andrew

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 2 lety

      Hey there Andrew! As I shoot digitally, regardless of the in camera settings it'll still record in colour to three separate channels that make up the colour images. IE red, green and blue. This is useful for black and white because we can set the brightness values of each channel, giving a lot more flexibility than just recording in greyscale.

    My version of Lightroom doesn't have a 'dehaze' slider.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 3 lety

      Hmmm. Yes I remember when that was added - although not which version it was. It's a useful slider but not an absolute must have. Similar results can be achieved with a combination of other sliders.

    Why don't you shoot in camera Monochrome?
    Converting to B+W in Lightroom is easier than trying to get B+W right in camera.

    • @AnthonyTurnham

      More control. I always like to give myself more options in post production.
