  • Layers are powerful. They allow you to build your creative vision systematically. They give you greater control over elements in your image and they allow you to combine different photos into a single image known as a composite. In this video, we'll take a look at how to use layers in Luminar 4 and unleash a new world of potential for your photo editing.

    So what are layers and how do they work?
    Layers act as a stack of images or adjustments layered one on top of the other. You see through one layer to the layer below via a mask. In this tutorial, we also take a look at how masks are created and how they work. Basically where the mask is white, what's on that layer becomes visible. Where it's black the layer is concealed and not seen. Variations of grey control the opacity (or the level of transparency of that layer) the closer to white the more you see, the close the grey is to black, the less you see.
    It's pretty simple but does take a little while to get your head around.
    Layers come in a couple of types. You can have an image layer that is an actual image (photo, graphic, or other pixel-based layer) or it can be an adjustment layer which enables you to make changes to the look of whatever is below. Masks are available in both layer types to allow you to control where you reveal what's on the layer.

    Not to long for me because you can go at a nice clear pace which especially in this instance has helped me fully understand for the first time layers and methods of use. Your teaching style is perfect, mostly because it's not at break neck speed. I often thought can a video be longer so I'm not forever rewinding because of going to fast. Look forward to more. thanks for posting.

I've gone over it again and again and looked on my version of Luminar (Neo) and there is no plus sign. Hmmm.... goood question. In short, not as easily as L4. If that's what you're after doing then Luminar 4 would be a better option (you can use ATSKY10 for a discount). This bit of tough love advice may not be what you want to hear, but going forawrd I'd be doing everything I could to nail it in one shot in camera - even if you have to take 5-10 shots to nail it. It's still quicker than fixing it up in post production. 😀

      I don't think it's my hardware that's slowing it down, since I'm using a brand new ryzen 5800H laptop. Luminar is the only program with this lag. Do you have any suggestions to help this matter?

  • @ThePikkujaska
    @ThePikkujaska Před 3 lety +1

    Do you know if this can be done in LuminarAI?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 3 lety

      Yes - and no. So Luminar AI did away with layers to simplify the workflow and speed up the AI engine as a whole. A tick box on both of those. However, layers have a valid place for more hardcore editors. But there's a way around it in Luminar AI and that's to add the layers you want to add via the texture tool. IE you load the layer as if it were a texture. You can then mask it in, change the blending mode etc. etc. It's a bit of a hack but it works. The only thing that you're currently limited by is the ability to resize and reposition that layer.
      Nice blue hair by the way. I love it when people rock their own uniqueness!

      The version with layers is Luminar 4. The newer version, Luminar AI utilises local masks rather than layers.

      I haven't worked with 360 images and haven't come across this myslef I'm afraid. Perhaps the Luminar helpdesk can give some guidance?

      @@AnthonyTurnham Np , yea i contacted skylum & they solved my problem . Actually luminar can only save max size of 15000 & my file was over 20000 , so i had to reduce the size .

    I cannot find layers in Luminare AI, have i lost the ability to add a logo to a picture?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 2 lety

      Hi Gimbalair. Luminar 4 and the upcoming NEO have layers. Luminar AI is more akin to Lightrooms workflow and doesn't feature layers. Don't worry you haven't lost them. They're just not there.

  • @andrewhillphotosvideos2909

    Must admit I find Luminar 4 harder to use than Luminar Ai.. So same effect is easier to me in Ai.. great video but Luminar 4 is now history to me. maybe the same when I get Neo not sure yet. they are defo improving but money spent in the past is in the past.

    This is one of the most complex and difficult to understand layers and how to use them to polish-up your photos. Can you simplify your videos in small steps, so you can grow up and you learn the different steps? This is way too much to understand this stuff. I thought Luminar was a lot more intuitive. Not at all, I might say.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Před 4 lety

      It's an intuitive bit of software. Sorry that you disagree with the other viewers about the delivey of the info. I may make a more simple video breaking it down further in the future. I appreciate the feedback.

      AT does some very nice video presentations but also many other creators offer good ones too so be sure to just do a search for Luminar tutorials and you will have a need for a lot of free time to view everything. You could save the links in bookmarks but I like to create folders and then save by category for future use. View everything you can and then the process becomes easier until an update comes and then the learning begins again or is added too lol.
