    On a slightly different subject , Luminar neo automatically colour grades my raw drone footage even though it notices its a DJI drone and the camera settings I used. I also have the Adobe converter installed as mentioned in one of your previous videos. Keep up the good work I've learnt a lot from your vids.

    I'm not sure the before/after of the hair, for example, on her forehead looks very good. I think this is one of the many reasons I've moved away from Neo to Evoto for portraits/headshots. Evoto is much more intuitive with these types of photos. Evoto is faster and cleaner in so many areas of touch up. Photoshop of course does this better too, albeit slower at times. Thanks for your wonderful work.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham Před dnem

      Yeah, To be fair I put the forehead hair removal squarely on me rather than the software. I didn't do a great job and rather than re-recording that bit and doing it correctly I just ploughed straight through. But, yeah, totally get where you're coming from. I think Luminar Neo does an OK job with protraits but it isn't portrait specific like some other more targeted programs. I think that's why Skylum are developing their new portrait app (Project Barcelona - pretty sure that name will get a revamp b4 launch!)

      Hi mate. I've used ON1 a lot in the past. I'm hoping to get into ON1 2024 and dig a bit deeper. They're both very able programs. For beginners I still think Neo is the better choice.

      @@AnthonyTurnham Thanks Anthony for your prompt response. I am planning to buy Neo. I have ON1 2024 but finding the learning curve quite steep besides it freezes my computer. A few in a ON1 facebook group told me to "be very careful with Neo as it has a lot of bugs" besides the photo turning out to be quite amateurish post editing. Not sure if this is something that you experienced.

    As of today, June 10, 2024 this is the BEST Panorama stitching technique I've ever seen. This is because you demonstrate how to adjust the RAW files to my heart's content first. Then export them as TIFF files BEFORE stitching them in Luminar Neo to get the best result. The only thing missing is you don't mention if this video is sponsored or not. Thank Anthony for such a HELPFUL video.

    Great walk-through as usual. I noticed that you didn't touch on shine removal though. I was hoping you may have some tips and tricks with this as I struggle with getting the tool to actually work on portraits that obviously have shine that could be reduced. Its pretty hit or miss with whether the tool decides to work or not on any given portrait. Either way, enjoy the content and looking forward to your next one.

    Sony RAW PICTURES CAN WE EDIT 😊

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham Před dnem

      It should load Sony photos no trouble. Due to the way the app works it'll load the raw file and run a conversion initially so the iPad isn't crippled by trying to push around huge amounts of data. It's great for on-the-go editing but I'd still recommend saving your final edits for its big brother ( bit.ly/NeoSale ) on your main computer.

  • @DarleneHildebrandt
    @DarleneHildebrandt Před 3 dny

    Hmm I have to disagree with you on one point - Luminar Neo is not doing destructive editing because it never alters the original file or saves over it. All the edits are in the catalog or database and you can always go back or revert to the original. Unlike Photoshop for example, if you open a raw file, use Develop raw, then open that as a JPG and apply any edits directly to that JPG like curves, etc - how you're doing destructive editing.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham Před dnem

      Yeah, I get your point and I could have elaborated on exactly what I meant but kinda just glossed over it in the vid. To break it down there's two ways to look at whether or not something is editing "destructively". The first and most simple way is can I return to my original state, and if the answer is yes then and my file is still in tact then the editing is non-destructive. If that's our criteria then yes 100% Neo is a non-destructive editor. But I look at it in a slightly different way, from the perspective of am I losing data as my edit evolves. So in Lightroom for example, I could boost my exposure to +5 and blow out everything. BUT I could then add a curves adjustment that recovers that data. This isn't possible in Luminar. Each subsequent tool bakes a new iteration of pixel data that is the base point for the edit from there on. That's what I'm referring to when I said it was destructive. On another note. Thanks for watching Darlene, and also commenting with a thoughtful response. I appreciate it and appreciate what you do on the tube too x Best regards, Anthony 😀

    just on the edit alone, perhaps it might be suggested to crop the image to a vertical or even rotate the image so the subject is on an angle -- not overly aggressive. This will get rid of the heavy amount of brightness of the background. Alternatively, keep in mind about selection of the background at the time of camera exposure. Move the subject in this situation to her left and that will change the background and also increase the contrast between highlight and shadow. Additionally, if one uses a feminine attitude which means to turn the subject beginning with a 2/3 body position and with the body facing to her left and then turn the head toward the light which results in a nice S curve shape to the subject. By turning the subject to a 2/3 facial view this gives a nice look to the subject. The 2/3 view contains the eye inside the orbit when the nose is rotated one direction or the other and the nose will not pass the inner edge of the eye toward which the nose turns. Next one can address the use of the hand. In this image, it appears that there is 2 & 1/2 fingers amputated and the back of the hand is showing and there also is a strong amount of highlight on part of the hand. It is a good idea to use the edge of the hand and also based upon the direction of the camera the posed hand or "show" hand generally looks best if it is the hand closest to the camera. Make the fingers long and tall with a slight curve to them. A good method of learning how to pose hands is to take a pen and place it between the thumb and the index finger and just let it rest there while holding it vertically while also bending the hand at the wrist back toward the forearm of yourself and then just translate that to the subject from her position. Keep in mind this idea is for females and men are posed somewhat differently. You are likely to find that women will say that they don't have nice hands and can't pose them very well. Assure then that with the technique you know and understand the use of, the subject will be pleasantly surprised at the result. Practice on yourself or a family member or friend. For older subjects, don't try to get too creative with hands and try to use a masculine pose rather than the feminine pose. As usual, AT does a nice job of showing how and why various tools available in NEO will assist the final result of a portrait.

    Thank you Anthony, an interesting approach, I will give it a try. I usually played around with the saturation sliders of the B&W tool after the color grading with a LUT. I can also recommend the High Key tool after the B&W conversion, nice effects there. Great video!

      Hi Carl, pop your insta details in here and I'll add you and go take a look :) I'm @anthony_turnham_photography Regardless of my "advice" of consistency with a look, I think it's more important to first explore different styles to help find your creative voice and the look that resonates with your work.

    Anthony As ever interesting but don't you get the same effect by using the Black and White tool and varying the luminosity and saturation? Are there any pros and cons to either route. Hugh

      No infact it's quite different. The B&W tool will help you get a better conversion than just desaturating but you'll still have a lot of work to make your B&W sing. This'll give you a better result much quicker. (But don't discard the other B&W tools as they still have a valuable place in a more refined b&w workflow)

    Today My MacBook air had the profiles in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/Adobe Standard Press CMD-Shift-. (point) to see hidden files. Reboot!

    Looks like one way to get Agfa Portriga. I am going to try that. BTW: What camera are you using?

    How is a LUT different to a Preset in this instance?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham Před 8 dny

      Look Up Tables perform a remapping of colour and tonal information in the underlying photo. A preset can include any number of tools that manipulate the photo in a variety of ways. A preset can contain a LUT within it along with other tools. A LUT is great fro colour grading but lets say you wanted to add a soft glow, then it can't do that. That's where a preset that contains the glow tool, for example, would step in.

      Hi. Here's the link to the video I did on setting up profiles in Luminar Neo but if you follow this approach it should make the profiles available to lightroom as well: czcams.com/video/7JFjFyotHpE/video.html

    Genius, thank you! Have to admit that I've been finding Neo a bit confusing lately so I'm all for the simple approach.

    Superb demo, thanks. I have lens question/opinion: Given that tele-lenses tend the flatten a subject and compress - and wide tend to do the opposite and enlarge features that are close to the camera - what are your go-to portrait lenses or “mm” if using a zoom lens?

      @AnthonyTurnham Před 8 dny

      Hmmm.... I don't have a go to as such. For example this was shot on a 50mm but I usually prefer between 85-150mm as a portrait sweet spot. 105 prime is a particular fav focal length but unfortunately my version doesn't focus as quickly as I'd like.
