- In this video, I'm going to teach you how I photograph a landscape in the harsh midday sun. By following the tips I share, I hope you'll be able to get out and start capturing your own stunning sun-drenched landscapes that will leave your viewers longing for more!
I visit Lindis Pass in New Zealand and share my approach to improving my composition until I have the frame I'm happy with. We'll look at why you should probably avoid the "look-out" spots and try to find your own unique angles and I also describe how I set up my shots and why I choose the camera settings I do.

❤ this was epic. There’s so much practical information to unpack here. This is exactly my travel experience. Sure those sunsets and sunrises are great but 90% of travel photography is dealing with crappy light.
I really appreciate u spending the time and $ to show us how taking images isn’t all fun and games but really requires immersion in the scene.
IMO what u showed are the skills that are the most difficult to master. Neo isn’t going to correct a bull crap composition that lacks interest and creativity.

Instead of doing a faster shutter speed, which I don't think helps that much however you should use mirror up mode on a DSLR (if it ha the feature) and also EFCS. Those will help more than just using a faster shutter speed. Better yet, if your camera has something like an "Exposure delay mode" then you could use that too (many of the Nikon Z mirrorless bodies at least have this feature, which tells the camera to wait X number of seconds before taking the shot - but it opens the shutter first and then waits X number of seconds, so you reduce or eliminate shutter shock using Exposure Delay Mode. I don't know if the DSLRs had it or not).
Great points there. And yes, the D850 does have those options. Funnily enough I use all of them when I'm on my architectural shoots. I think I was just being lazy in the field as I didn't want to go through the explanation of the menus and settings. I probably should have though. Thanks for the comment.

I’ve utilized Nik editing software for years, now owned by DxO after having been rescued from the clutches of Google. It’s basically the same as it was ten plus years ago, just updated for the newer OS Apple went to. I never had got the hang of PS or LR, then when Adobe went to a subscriber platform I completely lost interest in Adobe, I just couldn’t justify paying for something I might not use for a couple of months. I’d tried Luminar and its predecessor names but became frustrated at the continuous barrage of new versions I needed to purchase, thus my return to Nik as its simple to use and not constantly evolving…
I’d appreciate seeing more of this type of video explaining the whys and why nots of a shot.

Looks like you are using a D850 and if you use live view when taking brackets you don't have to worry about mirror shake. It's kind of like a mirror less camera at that point. Allows a bit less ISO. Really enjoyed the video though.
Great point about live view. I use it for my architecture shoots but not so much in the field for landscapes... but im going to try to do it more now. Thanks 😊

@@AnthonyTurnham Yeah, that's kinda my concern. You marketed the whole video as how to shoot in harsh light with uninteresting and unepic skies. Which is why it astonished and baffled me that for the final edit you changed the sky. Feels a little bit like it cheapens the amazing video you had going. I dunno, I guess I've got a more documentarian approach
Question for you. You said that you turn off the vibration. Are turning off the lens vibration or the camera vibration? Or both? Great video!
Just in my lens. The D850 body doesn't have in-camera stabilisation .
Just curious...why not use a lens hood instead of blocking the light with your hand?
Ah. Good question. When the lens hood is on I can't rotate the circular polariser. It's a pain.
Also because I like the option of combining polarised with un polarised shot in post I want minimal risk of camera movement between shots. Taking of the lens hood and then the polarised and then putting the hood back on just adds to the potential of disturbing the camera position.
Another excellent video but just a comment on using polarising filters with wide angle lens or when creating panoramas.
I think you have to be careful as the colour of the sky can vary across the width of the image.
I think I observed this in one or two of your images.
Of course with Luminar Neo there's always sky replacement. 🙂
Hi Dave, yes indeed it is an issue on the capture side of things, but it's usually a really easy fix with a feathered radial filter brightening that area, so I don't really let it concern me when I'm shooting. You'll also notice I took one set with the polariser and one set without, that gives me the option to use the polarised foreground with the non polarised sky if I want. I like to give myself options when I get into the edit 😀
9:02 why would you not mount to the lens instead of body when you are using such a long and heavy lens? Apart from potentially saving your camera body from ripping apart you also potentially have more stable overall system which could add to reducing vibrations if you worry about them.

True. But the thought of lugging around anything bigger, especially now I'm also carrying video gear and a tripod for that too isn't appealing. I need my own sherpa 😄
