Silly challenge. 10% of what? You can't compare it between two models, if they don't have identical battery sizes or miles per kilowatts. It's almost as bad as the how long does it take to get to 85%. Lol. 85% of what? I have old laptop that charges to 85% in a couple minutes...because the battery in fact has degraded so badly. lol. I don't stop driving my car because have only 10% battery left, and in a gas car you typically can't even tell 'where' 10% of gas tank remaining is...because that metric is so useless.

@@summertyme5748 It’s actually the best test to show what normal people will experience on road trips. Most people feel safe arriving at the next station with 8-15%. So 10% arrival and 15 minutes charging is a great way to test a car’s road trip capabilities.
Maybe you could argue the starting point of the test could be a few percent different across different cars (so that they match each other in miles left in the battery as a safe buffer, like 20 or 30 miles) but that won’t change the results too much.

Battery far too small for a truck with that consumption and price. Together with poor charging it's close to unusable for real work and roadtripping. Put a trailer on this one and drive 150 miles or what 😅

    • @kenhiett5266
      @kenhiett5266 Před měsícem +2

@@herrnaico 240 miles is not bad at all for a 7 passenger vehicle. Especially one with the squared off design that many people like me appreciate. Keep in mind that LFP batteries are made to be charged to 100% regularly. EV's in general are not good for towing heavy things at long distances (which the vast majority doesn't do anyway). GM overcame it by throwing a massive battery at the problem, but then you're forced to lug all that extra weight around for all of the other uses. Diesels are the correct tool for that job until battery technology improves.

The efficiency is the biggest improvement with this Gen 2. 2.64 m/kwh right when you got off the highway at 70mph is much improved over Gen1 R1S and the R1T has always been even more efficient than a R1S so the range tests in the large and max pack in the Gen2 will be interesting to see. Also this is not even on the range wheels. Would be interesting to see what those range wheels would add to the 2.64 m/kwh efficiency.

I am impressed and hopeful that Rivian will continue to improve and evolve its vehicles. I am not impressed with 241 miles of range. I perceive the R1S as an outdoor enthusiasts road tripping car and this version, loaded with a family and rec gear, would likely only get 225 miles, a far cry from range freedom.

  • @dugintexas7908
    @dugintexas7908 Před měsícem +1

So realistically, you are going to road charge to 80% because the charge curve really drops off there. Then you will run it down to 10% or so before charging. that is 70% of a battery LFP pack so about 165-170 miles of range between charges on a road trip. Take a dip for really cold or really hot and about a %15-20% loss... about 140 miles of range on less than ideal weather days. That is about two hours of driving between charging stops assuming that range makes the next charging station you need. Not a road trip warrior but certainly is serviceable for most people who will use it around town etc and occasionally road trip it.

I recommend that you make sure that your tire pressure setting procedure gives you optimal tire shape and load carrying capacity for optimal efficiency, treadwear, and traction.
I always set tire pressure to factory recommended for the load, in the cool of the morning, in the shade. Sun light on the tire sidewall can heat up the tire considerably and increase the pressure so that you get an incorrect pressure setting.

241 miles for an 80k EV is not that great. The efficiency of 2.6 miles per KW is also very poor. In this weather, my Model 3 will get approximately 4 miles per KW driving at 70 mph. This Rivian is the RWD version of the Model 3 and it just isn't that impressive. I don't like the look of the Cybertruck (it's sort of growing on me), but it appears to be a much better truck for the money. I do give this Rivian some credit for getting 241 miles because these are all highway miles, and that makes a big difference. It would probably get 260 - 270 miles in mixed driving, if you kept to the speed limit in the city.
I like Rivian trucks, and if I were going to buy an EV truck, it would probably be a Rivian., but I would look very hard at the Cybertruck first because it does appear to be superior to the Rivian in almost every metric. I would like to see how the two trucks compare off-road because Rivian has gained a reputation for being a great off-road truck with its four-motor truck (one motor for each wheel).
It appears that Rivian is still cutting its teeth with its vehicles and is going through the mandatory period of refining a new vehicle. Of all of the EV manufacturers, I believe that Rivian offers the most promise to raise itself up to a place where it can actually compete with Tesla. But that's not going to happen anytime soon. It's probably going to take Rivian at least five years to even begin to catch up with Tesla.

Not bad but this car only serves city needs at 240 miles full range at the best conditions.
Hauling a family, going 80 mph, weather not being perfect (hot or cold or windy or rainy) the full range will be 180-200 miles. So at every leg of the drive charging from 10% - 60% you can only do like 90 miles.
Paired with the slow charge rates on Rivians, it makes it difficult to even do a round trip from Dallas to Houston.
I wish they manage to get the large pack below $80k and do the updates necessary to get the tax credit and put NACS on the car. Now that would be an all round vehicle.

Depends on what you compare it with.
The car will do 2 miles per kWh in a normal road trip and has a 106 kWh battery and costs $80k.
Cars with better efficiency and a smaller battery have better charging curves at a cheaper price point.
So if you want to charge 120 miles or so to your next charging stop, you will be at a charging station way longer than most other cars at this price point. I think comparing it to a similar priced Model X Long Range, it would take at least 1.5 times. The 10% challenge would be a great metric to test this.
For the “new gen” of a high end EV, the charging performance leaves a lot to be desired.

So the real highway range is closer to 230 or so. At 75mph is might only be 200 which isn't great. But it's usable and this should charge a lot quicker than the NMC battery

It only discourages police further from doing anything about the issue with the "well at least it won't blind other drivers.
Plus matrix headlights still blind pedestrians. Unless they have a light on them it will turn off those areas and again, encouraging people to drive with their high beams on all the time is just a bad idea.

does everyone on out of spec ramble? you could trim this video 30-35% just sticking to what the point of the video is and cutting out some of the driving video.

10 minutes into the video just to get to the drive part? That's ~10% of the video. This is a video about range of the rivian. This video needs some serious editing to get it down to ~5 minutes. Way too long!

I disagree. I appreciate this channel’s commitment to giving a deep dive into all the details and a longer video is a byproduct of this.

The only thing that matters is how long to go from 10-80% at max charge rate?
    Everything else is noise.

241 miles ummm nah not for that kind of money. I really like the Rivian but couldnt justify the price of "filling up" the big of battery as well as the extra time to recharge on road trips For me it would actually be a going back a step from my 23 ID 4 awd. If you want to spend 45 minutes -hour at a charger just buy a Bolt.
Seems like we are going backwards instead of forwards on charging times.
Jordan can you take the Fancies VinFast out for the next 70mph, probably be pretty close to the Rivian, whats it going on 2 years old now, probably get 220 miles or so . Yes of course not nearly as nice quality wise but does have some great features including pet mode

2.2 kWh is terrible. How does Tesla and Lucid do it? Lucid is now 5 kWh. Sorry but if I am going EV I want the most efficient EV. Plus it must have a built in NACS. Thanks for the info. I will hold onto my Y for another year. Tell Kyle to quit using the wet rags on the chargers.

Good question! Per Forbes rivian has now burned more capital in total just since 2019 than tesla raised in its entire existence!
Over $21,000,000,000 rivian under rj has evaporated. For about 110,000 vehicle's produced. 😀
Back out rivians debts? And they are now completely worthless! Vs tesla has over 30bill in the bank and only 9bill in total debt.
I bet rivian tries to raise 3-5 more billion as soon as the first rate cuts happen later this year or next?
Even that still won't be enough to ensure they can reach the r2&r3 launches+build out the GA plant as rj himself in late 2023 publicly said the GA factory would cost rivian 10-15billion to build out&Fully staff! I wonder who buys rivian up for pennies on the dollar in 2026 Or 2027?
