    Great review Tom. Was really particularly interesting to hear from the Rivian engineers. I took a Rivian R1S for a test drive in 2022 and the harshness of the ride and the noise in the cabin turned me off the vehicle completely, so I am very happy to hear that they have made a very significant improvement in that area . I ended up buying a Tesla, which I have been extremely happy with especially after the suspension changes that occurred in early 2023. I was also really glad to see you mention the issue of an ATM at home charge capability. This to me is the only really big miss that Rivian made with the GEN 2. When you have a battery of over 100 kWh and your super off peak rate is only for six hours a night, having an 80Amp on board charger will make an enormous difference to the cost of charging the vehicle at home. I would really encourage Rivian to reconsider for at least the large pack and max pack versions to have included an onboard charger of 80 Amps.

    Tom, excellent and in-depth review with the Rivian engineers including upcoming software updates for our Gen 1 R1 vehicles. For the price we got our R1S before the March 2022 price increase, it's an absolute steal and we are going to keep ours for a very long time. The only thing I wish we could have in the Gen 1 is to be able to use the Driver+ on roads with divided roadways, not just 'mapped' ones. I would have liked a little bit more resolution on the front and back cameras, but not a big deal. It would come in handy for post incident issues. Love where Rivian is heading and their future is even more brighter than ever before.

Much better than some other instrument panels I've seen on other EVs. What we see here might seem cartoonish or a bit childish, but look again. If this were an ICE vehicle, would updates to CPU processing power, a new offering of engines, and more refined suspension be enough to consider it a new generation? For example the 5th gen Ford Mustang ran from 2005-2014. Even with the exterior changes that occurred in 2011, changes to the suspension, new transmissions and Ford dropping the 4.6l V-8 in favor of the 5.0L engines, they are still considered a 5th generation Mustang. I'll admit it is smart from a marketing perceptive to brand these and Gen2.

    From driving the gen 1 RS1 I have one minor quibble. Since Rivian seems to be listening to feedback here, I figured I'd mention it. I wish the cruise control speed set was the roller instead of the buttons. Sometimes I need to rapidly adjust the speed and the buttons require a ton of clicks. If we're about reducing clicks, that's an easy way to gain some back. Rolling is so much faster. The Tesla works this way, so I know it's a better input device for this purpose. I'm hoping Rivian adopts that mapping.

    I’m waiting for my Gen2 R1T - 2 motor standard battery. (August/September) As a first time EV purchase, I can understand why people hesitate. Other than cost, they should simplify the choices. One battery for the two motor, and a bigger battery for the Tri/4 motor, simple. Paint and Interior options should be across the board. Not limited by model. I would be better off with a Honda Ridgeline, but wanted to try an EV before checking out. I paid the $2,000 for Ocean Coast, but have to accept Dark Ash for wood trim, when I desired Driftwood, with my very light grey interior. Can’t get the Dynamic roof. Too many expensive Nickle & Dime options. Take care of your entry-level market; it will be your most significant newbie demand-high volume, low unit pricing. If you keep the R2 at around 50k, you’ll achieve it. Though priced right, I can see the R3 could be the VW Bug of the EV world-high School and college parking lots filled with them.

      I’m not sure about Rivian’s glass, but Tesla’s glass roof holds up to hail better than steel roofs of other manufacturers. We get hail here in Austin a lot, and Tesla’s roofs don’t typically require replacement… but other vehicles’ metal roofs and hoods do require a lot of repair work.

I have been complaining to Rivian almost from the beginning about the "squishy" suspension sound on any bumps under 30 mph (along with all the other noises and rough ride). Obviously they were well aware of these issues, particularly suspension, and there is absolutely no way i would have taken delivery had i known about these noises and even more insulting that with all my contact with them, they never acknowledged that they were working on these "normal" deficiencies. Finally after many, many conversations (the last one fairly heated), they are going to use some parts on the new generation and place them on my vehicle, but the fact is that i would have sold my vehicle and waited had they just been honest. Very dissapointed in a company/vehicle i wanted to love.

      Rivian's system is called Driver+. Similar to Autopilot, it's not a hands-free system, but it's not as advanced at Autopilot or FSD.

      Tesla self driving sucks in my area, I really wanted to like it, but I constantly had to keep taking over. The newest version was a lot better, but still drove worse than a teenager that just got their permit (in my area). So if Rivian self driving = Tesla, I still wouldn’t pay for it.

      No non-Tesla will have NACS before 2025. It wouldn't have been possible for anyone to do it before then. It's not like they just order the hardware and stick it in the vehicle. Changing the vehicle's chargeport takes at least 2-2.5 years for supplier contracts certification and homologation processes.

      Tesla had the most to improve over the years, so it made sense that they would make updates to the vehicle under the hood mid-cycle such as improving suspension, road noise, dual pane windows, etc. Though there are examples of other vehicles in the industry that don't change much of the exterior styling for years on end but will offer improvements to the suspension, engine, trim, etc. The Toyota Tundra exterior went largely unchanged from 2007-2021.

      The big thing that stopped me from trading in my Grand Cherokee for an R1S was the ride quality. My Grand Cherokee with it's air suspension system was much, much better than the original R1S, so if Tom is saying that this new model is much better, then I really need to go test drive one to see if it can indeed be a replacement for my Jeep. So if that's the sales pitch, I'm okay with it and eager to experience the changes.

  • @rohanb79
    @rohanb79 Před měsícem

    Again Rivian missed the mark by omitting the North America Charging standard NACS connector that Teslas use . Who wants to dongle up at home if you have Tesla wall charger and on the road where Tesla’s dual connector not available. And forget about charging at charging America and others.
    To the respected gentlemen interviewing the Rivian engineer, dude are you European? And if not why didn’t you ask about NACS? The CCS connector is clunky and sometimes can pinch your thumb-index finger skin webbing, happen to me frequently at ChargePoint at my work location.. that Euro junk connector needs to get out of USA. 🇺🇸
    You’re a charger focused guy and you missed asking this really?? Should have grilled him hard on it. Don’t buy any EV unless they put NACS. TILL THEN BUY TESLA.
