Why do Academics fear Luxenberg & Luling so much?

  • Why are Academics so critical of Christoph Luxenberg's "The Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Koran", and Gunther Luling's "A Challenge to Islam for Reformation", two books which prove that much of the Qur'an was derived from previous Christian Aramaic Lectionaries, Homilies and Hymns?
Western Academics like Angelika Neuwirth and Francois de Blois are scathing against Luxenberg and Luling. Yet, as academics themselves, this makes no sense, since what Luxenberg and Luling are doing is simple textual criticism of the Qur'anic text, which is an exercise that they employ themselves with other texts.
So, why do the Academics dismiss these two scholars so quickly?
It seems that academics like Angelika Neuwirth, one of the leaders of Islamic Studies in Germany, though they use the same textual methods Luxenberg and Luling use, they don't go nearly as far as them, nor choose to come to the same conclusions as these two scholars, and so simply nit-pick by suggesting that they wouldn't agree on some of their interpretations of certain Aramaic words, and suggest that what they do will upset Muslims needlessly.
But why make such nonacademic claims such as these? Isn't that the remit of scholars, to find out where certain mysterious texts came from and prove their antiquity from earlier sources?
Possibly it's out of fear of upsetting the Muslims in Germany, or in the countries where they still need to go to continue their research, or maybe it could be that their departments where they work are dependent on funds from the Muslim countries which sponsor them.
Others, like Francois de Blois, who don't have the academic credentials of Luxenberg & Luling choose to simply criticize them without using any textual analysis, possibly because they really don't understand what they have done, or choose not to delve into their theories too deeply, so employ 'ad hominem' to try to shut them down instead.
Whatever is the reason, similar areas of studies in other non-Muslim religious texts do not show such fear or hatred towards individuals who are breaking ground in new and exciting areas of research, suggesting that only in Islamic studies is this type of censorship evidenced.
Nonetheless, the younger academics who are now coming into universities in Europe and the US are beginning to look at Luxenberg and Luling anew, realizing that they have something special and substantial, which can't be simply dismissed with vitriol and personal opprobrium, laced with fear.

This is true in all disciplines especially medicine and science. When somebody has been teaching or practicing something for 30 years and they have a mortgage and kids in college, they have a financial stake in maintaining their current beliefs and vehemently or violently rejecting ideas that might prove them wrong thus hurting them financially, their reputation, in effect, shaming and embarrassing them, causing them to be ridiculed. It’s always the younger generation that doesn’t have any stake in the current viewpoint that is able to look at things anew.

In my layman's view, an academician who discredits others or fears to be critique is not worth the title because KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT REST IN ONE PERSONS HEAD.
it's unthinkable to think that only one view is correct and must be accepted by all, when NO MAN IS GOD.
it's unfortunate that, when we listen to especially Muslims in any arena they thinks their point is the most authentically correct and must be accepted by all.

This is not just a problem in this particular field but in other areas of modern science too, and it reflects a change in European civilization. European civilization (including its diaspora in America and other places) used to believe in the existence of truth and that truth was more important than social conformity or social harmony. Nowadays, most people believe that all truth is relative and every individual or community has its own particular truth that everyone else should respect. Now social conformity and the avoidance of offense are a higher priority than truth, which has been devalued. Feelings over facts is the new "value" that many people are trying to live by, and it affects scientists (and their funders) too because they are embedded in the larger, relativistic culture. This all started with G.E. Moore's "emotivism" movement in the early 20th century and now it has swept most of the broader culture, with some reinforcement at the popular level by the Hindu - influenced New Age movement.

I can tell you from first hand experiences, that science was never free. Besides clear state censorship, as a young scholar one had always to fully adapt to supervisors. A professor of mine studied under Heidegger who offered 0% freedom. There are only few exceptions. There has always been a fight for the power to define "truth". There is no truth but opinions - also in natural sciences.

Indeed, even scientists (if we can use that word at this early date) who completely agreed with Galileo would not come to his defense. The Jesuits were going to defend him at first, since they agreed with his theory, but then Galileo found a way to offend them. After the trial, one of the bishops told him that the trial was not really about Galileo's theory but Galileo personally. They saw this as their opportunity to give him his comeuppance. Keep in mind too that this happened in a small geographic area, so it was a matter of local politics where a small group of influential people can often get their way quite easily. Although Galileo's case has been repeatedly used in the post - Enlightenment period to illustrate a moral lesson (usually presented as science vs. religion), it is really not a good example of that; a better lesson to derive from Galileo is that "it's hard to fight city hall," especially if a lot of people don't like you.

@@abdillahijalalkhan2128 You are just a historical illiterate. Galileo was sentenced to house arrest, and the reason, as one bishop admitted openly after the trial, was because they just didn't like Galileo personally. The Jesuits, who supported Galileo's theory, were going to defend him, but before the trial he managed to offend them as well, so his conviction was a foregone conclusion, but he was just forced to stay home, where he continued to refine the mathematical basis of the same Copernican theory that has supposedly gotten him in trouble, although his friends had to sneak the finished manuscript out of the country to get it published. To spare him humiliation, he was not even required to make his own official retraction. Instead, his daughter, who was a Carmelite nun, was allowed to make the official retraction on his behalf. Galileo was 67 when he published the book which offended the Pope (who thought, perhaps correctly, that he was being represented by the unflattering character in the book who lost the debate). At that time, Galileo had already had health problems for years (which was why it took him 6 years to finish writing the book that got him in trouble), so he was probably not leaving home very much anyway. He finally died at the age of 77 from his health issues, still a loyal Catholic in spite of his legal problems with the Pope. Even though Galileo provoked his own problems to some extent, I do not disagree that he was treated unfairly, and that this was another outrageous incident in the long and outrageous history of abuses by overbearing rulers, a difficulty man has somewhat ameliorated with liberal democracies, but certainly not solved. But let us keep this in perspective: what would have happened to Galileo if he had lived not in Christendom, but in the Muslim world, which was still insisting for theological reasons (as were the Jewish rabbis) that the earth was flat?

Sadly one generally cannot support oneself or your family as a scientist/engineer/etc. without a position, whether an academic position or a job. Thus most scientists are greatly influenced by their paymasters, as telling the truth makes you poor. It does not matter what field of study or manufacturing you are in. When I was in pharmaceutical formulation development 15 to 25 years ago, I saw that the drug I was developing a generic formulation for (an emulsion) did not need the oil at all, but the drug itself could be emulsified without first being dissolved in the oil. Doing this would minimize the risk of bacterial growth, which is an issue with most emulsions. I took this to my bosses, and suggested that I do a quick study with an expired batch of the drug raw material (only kept for studying break down products or impurities) to see if my idea was feasible and if the resultant emulsion was sterile filterable, which the oil based emulsion was not, which would eliminate the heat sterilization process which caused the formation of impurities. I was told to drop the idea, not even write it up at all. Five to ten years later, while having to reformulate the product due to the new requirement of bacterial inhibitors, I was asked if I still had the study on the product I proposed, as some other company had filed a patent on it, which we could break if I had done the research. I told them that I was told to drop the idea and to not waste the two hours on it. It turns out we had to do all of the clinical trials on our new formulation that we would have had to do on my proposed formulation, so they thought it would be a good idea to go back to it. Too bad, so sad, we could not because we only had my emails and responses. Not even a lab notebook page as I was forbidden to waste any time on it.

Two other such areas are genetically based group differences and Holocaust research (and really anything that angers a particular ethno - religious group whom I am hesitant to mention in this context on youtube because of "the algo," even if the offending research is conducted by a member of their own group), and to some extent "climate change" research has been moving in that direction as well. Climate science researchers who reach the "wrong" conclusions have a harder time getting published, have a much harder time getting funding for additional research, and sometimes lose their jobs as well. Any field of research that gets heavily politicized has to deal with this problem, and a paradoxical informal alliance has developed between Islam and the powerful political & cultural Left.

Essentially when a new theory is proposed that upsets the establishment apple cart the "old Guard" who were invested in terms of status and thus economically as well, opposed the new theory, because accepting it would damage their prestige and thus their financial support. Only when they died off and younger people who had been mostly shut out of the prestigious positions by the old guard, and been investigating the new theory on their own time (outside of their official low grade positions), took over the "establishment" would the new theory be considered. Now with Islamic sources doing the funding of many of these positions, this mechanism is mostly broken.

No one has asked a simple question about Arabic and Allah! Arabic, we are told, is the language of Allah. The eternal version of Al Qur'an - the Mother of the Book - sits on a jade table on the right hand side of Allah in Paradise, we are told. In that case, why does Arabic grammar have a past, a present, and a future. Allah is eternal. He exists in one, ever-present moment. So, why is it possible for Allah's language - Arabic - to express past actions, present actions and future actions?
    Can anyone explain?

    • @peterleadley
      @peterleadley Před 2 lety +1

Because, if you read it, you will find it says in Ayah Yusuf 12:2 "We have revealed this Qur'an in Arabic, so YOU (an Arab speaker) may understand it." It is the language of Arabia, not the language of Allah. You will also find that the word 'Qur'an' interprets as 'recital' not 'book'. The Arabic for book is 'kitaab'. It is referred to as the Holy Qur'an, not the Holy Kitaab. The recitation is God's, the written word is human, and subject to human failings. That is why the message never changes, only the local version of writing it down. Better? Glad I could help.

@@peterleadley You haven't answered the main thrust of my comment. The so-called 'Mother of the Book' - the eternal version of Al Qur'an, sits on a jade table in Paradise on the right hand side of Allah, so we are told. That implies that Arabic, like Allah, has always existed! Therefore, Arabic has no beginning, no present and no end - like Allah! It is an 'uncreated' language, in the same way that Allah is uncreated. So why does Arabic have a grammatical past, a present, and a future?
And as for your lecture in language: the word qur'an ("reading, lectionary") is a rendition of the Aramaic word 'qeryan-a', a book of liturgical readings. This is unsurprising as Aramaic is the language from which we get Hebrew and Arabic. Aramaic pre-dates Arabic!

@@angusmcfarlane1225 Here it is in simple terms "so you may understand it".
The Qur'an is not a book, it is a spoken message. Therefore it cannot be anywhere physically. A 'recitation' is not a written message, (your own interpretation of the word Qur'an) it is a spoken one.
The book we know is that message written down by humans.
If you can tell me to whom you are referring when you say 'we are told' I would be interested. Or is it something that you assume is correct because you heard it somewhere?
The fact that the angel tells Mohammad he is revealing the message in Arabic so Mohammad can understand it, would imply that the language of the angel's home is something OTHER than Arabic. If someone says otherwise, I would seriously doubt their claim. Unless of course they have visited the realms of angels and of God.

Translations are typically steeped in interpretation, an interpretation which is informed by centuries of the standard Islamic narrative. Honest translations are riddled with parentheses which include all the additions that the translator brought to the text.
If you read the Quran without parentheses and without the context of the Islamic narrative (Sunnah & Sirat), it’s very opaque. And as Gabriel Said Reynolds pointed out, Sunnah & Sirat were written after the fact in order to provide the context that was missing. In reality, the true context is of course the Bible and many apocryphal texts.
As for the defective script, that was likely not a deliberate choice. Robert Kerr has written about the origins of the Arabic script and he argues that it is indeed based on Eastern Syriac where there are less phonemes which explains the ambiguity. While the Quranic texts were only used by a small group of experts, that likely didn’t matter. Only once it spread did. the need for diacritics become apparent.
