  • #Snowflake and #Palantir are making big data happen! What immediately sets them apart: their respective valuations and public recognitions. Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway led #SNOW to a smashing debut. Buffett has been able to thrive in all sorts of market environments and economic conditions by adapting his investing strategy over time. Does #PLTR stand a chance? It's a close call!

I bought some PLTR after researching the company and watching some interviews of Thiel and Karp. One thing is abundantly clear. Peter Thiel is a genius savant when it comes to creating software companies that can find a niche. PLTR has already been proven in the most demanding and rigorous environments, the military. Word is they absolutely love the software. Karp didn't believe in having a sales department, but now that they are pivoting to the private sector, they created one about a year ago. This stock will be a mega cap in 5-7 years. They will redefine how businesses interact with their ERP software and databases.

I don’t know why everyone is comparing Snowflake with PLTR. People: Snowflake is a cloud data management company. They build software that allows companies the ability to manage their cloud implementations better. Therefore, they compete against the big boys: AWS, Azure, Oracle, IBM, etc. PLTR is a BIG DATA ANALYTICS company. They have created a couple of platforms that allow their clients to make better sense of their data quickly and without too much CAPEX. PLTR sends in its engineers and analysts to see how they can help clients with specific problems they might have using big data on their software. PLTR has literally dozens of competitors. Two VERY different companies. In my view long term, snowflake is scalable, but, as I said competes with a few big boys. PLTR’s story is yet to be written. Remember, they are a 17 year old company. And still government accounts for over 60 percent of their revenue. I don’t think they can scale as much into non-government verticals.... because each vertical has its own specific big data issue.
Finally, you may want to repeat your analysis after excluding the “stock based compensation” numbers from PLTR’s numbers. That will give a clearer and more Apple to Apple comparison between Snowflake’s numbers and PLTR and will account for the “cliff” you observed in their last financials.

SNOW isn't similar to PLTR at all, their only similarities are data science sector and stock market listing time. SPLK is much better comparison point, as both companies started about the same time (2003 and 2004) and have similar market cap (30b). SPLK has almost 2x revenue and 3x assets of PLTR, if somewhat lower growth rate. As for direct competitors to PLTR, it's big guys like IBM, AMZN, GOOG, MSFT and ORCL. They have similar (if less specialized) tech and positioned to secure government and big biz contracts.

PLTR takes existing static unformatted data and converts it into usable data where you can do interesting analytics on it. The way they do this is unique and is not being done by anyone else that I am aware of. One of the early common misconceptions of PLTR was that they do data mining to augment a company's existing data, but they simply dont do this. They create an Ontology of a company's data which allows analysists and business people to draw insights. Snowflake on the other hand from what I know is in the cloud business and they seek to produce analytics on data by adding some intellisense when people share data. PLTR also does this but Snowflake is trying to be more like B2B lets all share data, where as PLTR hasn't gone down this path because they have been focusing on conserving the authenticity and security of a company's data.

Personally i believe SNOW is focusing on the data lakehouse business. Being a data cloud within the cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS). PLTR literally is a big data analytics as a service (BDAAS) where they provide the data integration and analytics. As they are not a data warehouse, I believe PLTR focus is bringing real value of the data - by providing their stellar service with software.
So its tough. From a maco perspective, SNOW is an data cloud ; a structure for all other players in the ecosystem to thrive. While PLTR really focus on analytics and providing real end value.

Thanks for this video: Palantir looks like a better reward/risk potential. However, I must admit, I don't know the difference in their products? What is the difference in their product offerings? Thanks!

Palantir is more focused on helping users make sense of big data, with products like Foundry and Gotham. Snowflake is also in the "big data" business, but seems more focused on cloud computing, reducing the operational burden for companies. Both of these will be needed, and I can see a bright future for both companies. My money is in Palantir though. Sure, PLTR is expensive based off of multiples, but Snowflake's price/sales is insane.

They're definitely Not competing... Snowflake is about aggregating and distributing data across networks, while Palantir actually does this, but provides decision making power via AI based on established business rules...

PLTR has been around for 18 years, where SNOW is was founded approx 9-10 years ago....hence, the revenue numbers are going to be larger for PLTR.

PLTR revenues are 40+% govt and 50+% commercial and they are trending towards the commercial side. The opportunities are endless on both fronts (domestic and international). There aren’t many competitors that can match PLTR’s software. I would HODL as they say in the crypto space!

The two companies are not comparable. Snowflake is like a data warehouse in the cloud. Nothing more. They have an abstraction layer over the existing cloud services, but still, users need to choose, for example, which kind of instance of a virtual machine they want to start (some kind of experienced cloud users targeted?). See their demo video - it's a fail, if you understand how it works. I think, only with much amount of marketing Snowflake will be able to win new customers. But one of the big cloud companies could easily create a little side project to allow users to do the same things Snowflake offers.
Palantir seams to offer more, but I have to see a demo first. The fact, that customers from the government use Palantir for about 15 years now shows, that their software is useful and they were able to stand against competitors.

Why doesn't Palantir use its tech to play the stock/ commodities market and make tons of money to reinvest in itself and expand their business operation... they seem like the type of company to outcompete and outperform the market in every way...

Operating expenses will rise for Palantir since now they started ramping up their marketing to reach other clients than the government. I do think Palantir seems like a better investment though. The CEO seems to be more of a visionary and the experience they carry..

I'm missing the connection. Palantir in my mind is more about creating a digital twin of a business or environment and modeling an outcome based on the data inputs, including predictive data. Snowflake is more about throwing a bunch of existing data at it and trying to make better sense of it. Both involve data, but Palantir seems to have a more methodical approach to help business make decisions with known, modelled outcomes. Palantir will tell me the answers as the data inputs change. Snowflake an others will show me trends and information clarity on existing data. Both have a place in the world, but they're NOT the same.

Big Picture prediction: with the rise of digital yuan and ant financials, pltr is positioned to help build fed coin infrastructure! This is the play. They sued US Army and won. No one in history went to war against US Army and win but PLTR did it. This applies to every levels of government and I’m hoping they get the federal reserve contract! This is the ultimate play!
