- There are just a few weeks to go until the national and provincial polls that will impact the lives of 62 million South Africans.
The Western Cape is home to 7 million citizens with a registered electorate of 3.3 million whose vote will decide which party runs the province. For the last 15 years, the province has been governed by the official national opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA).
In 2019 - the DA won 55% of the vote in the Western Cape, taking a majority of 24 seats in the 42-seat provincial legislature. The ANC returned as the official opposition.
Lester Kiewit hosts a debate with these five largest parties currently represented in the Western Cape Legislature and asks, 'Is the Western Cape a fundamentally better-off province than in 2019?'
This debate took place on 3 April 2024.

The ANC talks a lot of crab, they cause all these problems in this and if I was them I would hide my head in the sand. Why do you think they want the Western Cape, if there are so much problems. Most of these parties are a bunch lazy thugs, some of them criminals.

The parties are just jealous of the DA and talk a lot of bull. The ANC closed all factories, schools, tecnicons, broke down Denel, Sasol. So the ANC greate the unemployment problem and they bus in a lot of people from Eastern Cape. The ANC claimed a well working Western Cape from the previous National Party. They have done nothing. Let the people built their own houses, as I did. ANC took away the pride, respect, responsibilities etc. All the other parties did nothing.
So the whites flooding into WC is fine from other provinces just not blacks from EC

Um, when will we see a debate on the issues, rather than party politics, such as
- water & food security
- the housing crisis & affordable housing
- sustainable urban development (gender sensitive & child friendly cities)
- the just energy transition
- poverty & unemployment
- gender equality
- crime, violence & corruption
- protection of democratic principles & institutions
- enviro stewardship
- climate (mitigation & adaptation)
- education & healthcare
- enviro friendly waste management
- imtegrated, safe & affordable public transit, active mobility options etc
No wait, I forgot... SA follows the US system of spreading hate & division among parties rather than problem-solving critical issues (the difference between life & death, a good life or a really difficult one!).
SA is a medium income country yet over 50% of our people live in poverty & nearly 40% are unemployed - infrastructure, cities, schools, healthcare & roads in shambles. Our population is increasing yet we are facing food insecurity, a water crisis, a lack of affordable housing, our kids can't read for context (but why bother because they probably won't get a job anyway). Climate change is going to affect quality of life in SA in a major way, but we won't think about do anything about until people start dying in droves, but we're more worried about charging our devices than food, water, pollution, our kids' future (the lucky ones can emigrate right?)...
The DA represent a lot of what you've mentioned but we're not the USA and thank goodness please take the time to read the DA manifesto they are fighting a political war with the ANC who have put South Africa in a Crisis they are trying to save South Africa from the rot of the ANC hear is the reality ANC totally corrupt EFF hell no Socialism and Marxism ideology PA ex Gangster who seeks power all other Splinter parties that don't have capacity the DA good morals good ethics good administration good Govenance and the Capacity to Govern who would you Vote DA all the way

On the Western Cape population figures i find it strange that the EFF guy is combining Coloured/Indian population group? This isn’t officially done by population statistics as well as not as such defined by the Constitution.
StatsSA demographic information for 2023 breaks it down as follows for the Western Cape:
Coloured- 41.2%
Black - 38.8%
White - 16.4%
Indian or Asian - 1.1%
Although i don’t agree with the racial classifications this is what the actual StatsSA numbers reflect.
So what is the motive of the EFF guy combining the Coloured and Indian numbers?

I always find it interesting how political parties in the WC inevitability bring the conversation back to "THE CITY" almost like a place where the Pope lives. The WC is a huge province. Ask other people in the province their opinions. It's really annoying to listen to this narrative. Include the whole of the WC when opinionated politiicians deliver their election speeches.
