      For Guy Williams, the star of the show to be put on back burner as Smiths character rose to the front must of been a blow to him . The show went from being serious to Dr. Smiths clown show . I guess as long as you got paid the same .

    Doctor Smith at first was a spy and evildoer then he became a buffoon. The cry baby. Would have be more interesting if he was a resourceful agent or some sort of international man of mystery.

    • @Geezer-yf8hv
      @Geezer-yf8hv Před 3 lety

      It would have been interesting for a while. As evil as he was early on, he would have to be killed off. It’s a wonder they didn’t anyway! So Jonathan Harris changed him into a comedic villain that people “loved to hate”, instead of purely hated. He really made the show, (and the Robot, too), both of which were not in the original pilot, “Nowhere to Hide”. If you saw that, it had the spectacular Jupiter 2 set, the great model work of the ship crashing, the fantastic chariot, the cyclops, etc....but it still was somewhat boring as the Robinsons by themselves were not that exciting. Dr Smith gave them an antagonist to balance out their goodness. The humor added was good also, to a point. I regret that it totally went into ridiculous mode in later seasons and focused TOO MUCH on the buffoonish Smith.

    • @johnscoone9310
      @johnscoone9310 Před 3 lety

      @@Geezer-yf8hv Smith, or rather Jonathan Harris struck the right balance in S1E6, when he was resourceful enough to perform a delicate operation on the robot, but still devious enough to convince the children not to go with Hapgood, while negotiating his ride back to earth.

    • @Geezer-yf8hv
      @Geezer-yf8hv Před 3 lety +1

      @@johnscoone9310 Right!! He was supposed to be a psychologist, and he was manipulating EVERYONE, (he also did this well in “The Sky is Falling”). As you also stated, he did have technical skills with the Robot, both mechanically and reprogramming). He was able to “tamper” with the Jupiter too, forcing it to crash instead of having a normal landing. He became an incompetent boob overnight, apparently! Now Harris was very wise and correct that he needed to change the character to remain sustainable on the show. What he brought to the show made it so memorable to many, and brought in a comedy aspect that just wouldn’t exist without Smith, (for example “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”, which had ZERO humor).
      The problem was with the writers when they went way overboard by making him the main focus of every show and going way over the top! Harris may have rewrote much of his own dialog, but he was NOT the one writing the stories and plots!

    Dr. Smith was evil in the first few episodes but he realized that that character would not have much longevity in the series so he morphed it into the silly character he became and quite literally save the show. If not for he and Will Robinson plus the robot the show may not have continued for the three seasons. I read an article from one of the writers for the series talking about the great vegetable rebellion episode and trying to figure out how the hell they were going to come up with more stories for season four because they just had nothing left.

    • @geraldscott4302
      @geraldscott4302 Před 2 lety +3

      I have to disagree. Dr. Smith ruined the entire series. He should have been killed off during the first couple of episodes, or never been there at all. Watch the actual first pilot of the show, which does not include Dr. Smith or the robot. It is SO much better. I don't see any harm in including the robot, but Dr. Smith just totally ruined everything. I can only think about what this series could have been. The rest of the cast was great.

    David. Really good job on some of these videos. Could you say a few words about how you’ve created some of the ‘splash screens’ / ‘title cards’ for your videos? This one for example is an awesome shot of the family approaching the Jupiter II from an angle never seen in the show (or so I believe). I’m also impressed with your Alpha Control shots on your launch videos. Please keep up the awesome work!

      The title card I created in Gimp. The traditional view is reversed and the door scrubbed out. An overlay planetary scene is then placed in front of the Jupiter 2. I then paint out parts of the overlay to reveal the Jupiter 2 behind. You can make the overlay's opacity up high so it's easy to see the Jupiter behind it and you can trace the ships parts. You then can do touch ups to blend both parts together.
      The characters are single cutouts placed in and I paint a shadow in for each character. You can also add rocks and stuff if you want.
      These composites sometimes work like this one and others just don't work out. Sometimes it's luck they all blend together seamlessly.

      Aoelus 14 Umbra was either a foreign government power, possibly Chinese or it was aliens who were intent on keeping the humans from spreading out into the galaxy as shown in the comic series "Voyage to the Bottom of the Soul", co-written by Bill Mumy. In that story the engine that powered the Jupiter 2 was reverse engineered from a crashed alien craft. Also, Dr Smith's belief that the ship they encountered right after leaving the earth was an Aoelus 14 Umbra ship helps bolster that idea.

      @johnscoone9310 Před 3 lety +1

      In my reimaging of the series, AEIOULIS 14-Umbra was the Keeper. Smith was his unwitting or perhaps unwilling agent. The intention was never to destroy the J2, only to send it on a different course to Priplanis, which the Keeper wanted so he could recruit human subjects from earth. He put them through a series of trials and tribulations and thought they would welcome his assistance, but the Keeper underestimated the resolve of the Robinsons. There is a lot more to this but that's the basics of it. When you have the Keeper as the reason they were lost, the entire series begins to make perfect sense. Well at least the first season or so.
