Tackling my Nemesis *** Wrynose & Hardknott Pass***

  • Hi all,
    Well......this has been a ride that, in all fairness, I wasn't looking forward to doing. :(
    This has been my biggest nemesis since I first attempted this back in 2021. Since then I have been lacking confidence in hairpins and narrow roads.
    Anyway, I decided (maybe brave or stupid?) to give it another go.
    I take the easier option to ride from Little Langdale and complete the Wrynose first. Then tackle the Hardknott.
    As always thank you for watching.

      It's not for the faint-hearted. If you're going to ride it, do it from the Ambleside end. Head for Little Langdale and ride the Rynose pass first, then do the Hardknott

      Go when it's quiet for less oncoming traffic, less chance of getting caught out on a tight hairpin etc. Enjoy, I usually do this route each year and love it.

    Well done my son! That terrifying switch back on the way down! I did exactly what you did. Momentary over think-there’s no margin for error-then got the bike stopped-not necessarily a good thing-then ease it round on the brake til it’s pointing in the right direction and away! Good for you. Pleased I did it but no interest in going back 😅

    Well done…..I am returning to riding after 42 years….so a tad rusty, I am taking it easy, but know I have lots to re learn….got a fair few twisty roads in Jersey….biggest issue, so so many cars to watch out for….I ride a 2023 Honda NC750DCT…..bit tricky to start with, no clutch, so it’s all throttle and brakes…..gentle gentle….squeeze slowly in and out, I keep reminding myself…..super video, you did really well, I can feel your pride and guts to do this….

Stayed overnight in Cockermouth, before completing Hardnott and finally Wrynose Pass. It’s amazing how the footage doesn’t show how steep the passes are. Managed to do all without having to put my foot down. Needed a few days to recover. Keep the great videos coming.

    Good to see you tackle your nemesis, never mind how difficult the road, you have to get over your fear first. ive done this in a car and on an xv950 both times in the opposite direction, i got stopped on that exact bend as 2 cars coming down didnt stop to let me get round the bend, i was fully loaded after spending a few days in Scotland and when i got going lifted the front wheel up heading for the grass, had to lean it to the right to get it down and heading in the right direction. It was cold and wet which didn't help, but i know ive got to go back.

    Well done Paul, it's the mental blocks that are harder to overcome. If it's a lack of skill you can train and practice but there is no training course for the mind so once the confidence is shaken it's tough to overcome. Anyone who jibes should go and do it because I did it last year and the camera does not show anything of what it is really like and the road surface is unbelievable bad. Congratulations on tackling your Nemesis, you'll fly round it next time.

    That was an exercise in overcoming a personal fears, well done. Others should not be put off, an average rider on an average middle weight (eg CB500) will be fine. There's a few places where the combination of steep camber, steep gradient and a sharp corner will require care and forward planning. Best to look ahead to ensure you don't meet a coach when you're halfway through a difficult bit. I'm a very average rider but had no real problems in either direction on either my GPZ500 or the 600 Fazer that replaced it. I would not want to do it on a Wing or a Rocket 3 but I'll bet that it's been done many times. Best wishes.

    An interesting video of a good quality. WELL DONE PAUL. I did Hardknott many years ago in a small car in good weather. I would not like to do it in high winds or heavy rain with mist or fog around. Lots of on coming traffic also makes it far, far more dangerous. If your a car or van driver, don't do it if your rubbish at reversing as this requirement, being good at reversing could be a must on that single track road with such dangerous drops. A good pulling engine is also required along with good tyres. A car tip. Always have someone with you sitting in the left seat. They should say car, bike or van etc. not shout it if one's spotted when approaching right hand bends as a warning. This gives the driver an approx 2 sec. earlier warning to react.

    Well done Paul. Was wondering if you had thought about whether it was worse on the RT due to the bikes design / layout or just a confidence thing? I have an RT and being a shorty (29" inside leg), I find the weight more of an issue so stopping is more fraught for me on anything other than flat camber. I also find the high and wide bars a little awkward as they approach full lock all though that could be a reducing strength due to my 68 years....see you at New Broom.

    GOTTA BE HONEST..... My first instinct was to say 'Get round there my son".... But from the comfort and safety of my sofa, everything looks doable... Easy even. And video just dont cut it! Everything looke more or less level. Besides this was YOUR Personal Battle. So regardless how hard or easy it looks to anybody else, this is how it was for YOU. And the fact that you were able to share that Battle with the biking world, took BALLS. BIG BODANKAS. You have earned the right to a John Wayne Swagger & Drawl for the forseeable future. Props to you my man!
    Now Im just gonna have to break out the sat nav & start planning... how far away is Wrynose Pass?......

    Last time I did these two was in an old Saab 900 Turbo saloon with ignition controller issues in 1986. It was horrendous round the hairpins. Otherwise OK.

    now turn round and do it in the opposite direction. No, but seriously, well done for conquering that. It's difficult on a bigger bike. I've only done it on my old 600 but in the other direction and it was bad enough. I don't fancy taking my much heavier 1300 up there, so well done.

    Well done Paul, My partner and I have done this twice, Her on a Bonneville and me on a Tiger.. I get stuck at exactly the same place as you. We always stop off at the Woolpack to calm the nerves down with a pint of bitter shandy and a long thoughtful look at each other and swear we will never do that again.... We are going back to the Lake District this year. Wish us luck (BTW she doesn't know I have it already set in the satnav route)

    Get the revs up and slip the clutch round those hairpins. Stops the chance of stalling. Stalling on the corner and losing momentum is what can cause you to drop the bike

      @paulgriffiths6404  Před rokem

      Yeah, just about. The camera doesn't show the true camber, and on that bend I walked around, it was pretty steep. If you take your time, it'll be ok. If your thinking of doing it my advice is do it from Little Langdale side, so Wrynose to Hardknott. 👍👍👍

      @@paulgriffiths6404 I did porlock hill and was very steep. I'll be fine I'm pretty lanky. Yeh they all say do it from west to east better views but I'm traveling from south not going to bother going around because them roads can take all day. Haha in Cornwall took shortcut had to get out a guide to get over a bridge.

    @mjohns5944 Před rokem +1

    @25:48 That shows the true steepness of that part. If you go too fast you end up nearly kirbing on the immediate left turn at the top. I did it on a Triumph Thunderbird 1700 ..... but had had lots of practice on the small roads of the Alps. Not the easiest hill/corner combo on a big bike.
