- BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING! my designs are mishmash of movie and personal hc designs sometimes based on the books sometimes not (see basically everyone except for gandalf/aragorn/boromir)- SO YES... my hobbits have tails. i think its cuter that way but its not canonical!
so!
someone (me) got into lord of the rings. then proceeded to watch the whole extended trilogy several, several, several times to the point where i organized a whole three week long weekly watch session to introduce it to a whole group of my friends. since i keep yammering on about it i decided to make a video after my housemate said that this song is a lotr song and yaknow what!!! SHES RIGHT!!!!!
i love how earnest and loving this stupid trilogy of books and movies are, like the worldbuilding is insane and wonderful and something to aspire towards as a gm, but like, its the fellowship that really gets me here!! like theyre not even really a team for more than a book (rip boromir i love him to bits yes im aware that he could be seen as boring or mean but... i like him.......) but the fact that this unlikely team up made ripples all throughout the rest of the series and how their friendships were what saved the day? cinema. i obviously put a little focus onto aragorn, sam and frodo, but like really this video is about all of them.
i just! i like it! i like that its about togetherness in the face of great turmoil and danger and it has problems but gosh! if sams speech at the end of two towers doesnt get me. in the same way that the horn in return of the king signalling the arrival of rohan gets me. in the same way that sam and frodo tenderly cradle each other at the end of all things.
im just saying! this story has some top tier friendships! and you bet your butt i cried! i really cherish my experience with this story. even if the books took me a long second to read (i first started fellowship when i was around 12 and it took me all the way until... this year... to finish the books........)
i wasnt a fan of the movies until say, 2019, i had formed a good chunk of my personality around NOT LIKING LOTR but then i convinced myself that, hey, its a classic for a reason right, why dont we try to actually watch it and oh oh what what whAT THIS IS LEGITIMATELY SUCH A MASTERPIECE OF CINEMA...
again. have problems with it. but boy, did it hit me right when i needed it to.
ANYWAYS. i hope you enjoy it! i poured some love into it and its not... a masterpiece in the way that the movies are, but i hope its something of a little tribute that i can make to the world of middle earth. i know the video community in lotr has been quite active lately! orcs with normal voices dude! ur cool! that one 9 hour comp of sam saying this is the furthest hes ever been from the shire! wowza!!! good content.
its been a source of joy. which is sorely needed.
this one has backgrounds! for once!! which is why im happy to report that it took me a grand total of 24 hours to complete over the last week and im probably going to crash now... and my hands are paying the price ;w;
im still hammering out the dr pilchard video, can you believe it, i actually broke my 3 video streak twice in a row its actually blasphemous of me BUT i broke my rule about never using the same music artist twice already (abba and queen just!!! slap!!! what can i say!!!) SO MAYBE ILL DO THAT OVER EASTER BREAK? or in the summer. we might have a mechs resurgence yet.

As a personal note: the appendices definitely states that Sam eventually snuck his ass over to the Grey Havens, so he and Frodo didn't say goodbye forever.
Also Legolas and Gimli were allowed to sail in the undyimg lands, they were always togherter
everyone of the fellowship except for Aragon , Merry and Pippin made their way to the Grey Havens over time. Sam was briefly a ring barer so his life was extended a little, his grand kids were grown and Rosie was dead when Sam left to rejoin Frodo. Gimli was the only dwarf to go, and went because he and Legolas were devoted best friends to the point that they were platonic husbands.

@@silk.and.cologne well they aren't outright married since Tolken didn't write stuff like that but they were described as friends who were devoted to each other on a level that could be compared to a married couple. and one was a prince and other became a lord.

Ok but having Aragron show up when the song says "hope" is actually amazing because Aragorn's elvish name was Estel which means hope.

Also, Frodo fading in with "battle cry" was great, too. It may have been whispered, but "For Frodo" was the strongest battle cry of the series.

Say, wasn't this song used in one of the Chronicles of Narnia movies? If so, that's a neat coincidence since, as it is pretty well-known, Tolkien and C. S. Lewis were friends.
Also, this is a great animatic! It illustrates the trilogy beautifully. I love the character designs too. Hobbits with tails and Legolas with brown hair are things I never knew I needed in my life.
My family loves both C. S. Lewis and Tolkien, and I can confirm this is absolutely my favorite song.

This is beatiful! My favourite (also saddest) part is the end, where the Fellowship members disappear one by one: Boromir, redeeming himself in glorious battle; Gandalf and Frodo to the havens after carrying heavy burden; Sam following his beloved master many many years ago after the happiest of lives; Merry and Pippin passing in Gondor peacefully, together as they always were; then time for king Elessar came, and he accepted the gift of Ilúvatar of his own free will; and, after Legolas and Gimli left the havens, there was finally the end of Fellowship in Middle Earth. Thank you for this amazing video, it brought so many memories!

Sure, it's a little bit sad, but I feel like it's time to let go of certain things that don't interest me as much as they did before.
But that's me, some people keep their love for things intact for all their lives, and there's nothing wrong with that either.

I’m in tears from how beautiful this is! How you made them each appear on screen in accordance to the lyrics and how they each disappeared when they left Middle Earth are all so well thought out. The focus on remembering the journey is one I feel gets overlooked and you captured that essence here. Thank you for your tribute of this beautiful book!

I'm glad you liked Lord of the Rings. The movies hold a special place in my heart and will do so forever, much the same with the book. When I was a young lad Fellowship of the Ring was my favorite movie, in fact it was the first movie toddler me ever watched beginning to end without falling asleep or crying.

Damn this is good. The details you put un there. The dirt and calluses on Sams hand, the scars on Frodos neck, the actual canonically correct order of who died/went to the grey havens at the end. And that combined with the stunning artwork. Really good job. And I just love your Gandalf the grey, he locked awesome. Seriously, this is really good.
I still have to come back and watch this every so often. It gets me every time.

wouldn't it be amazing if, in an alternate universe where everyone survived the quest, and frodo didn't have to leave middle earth, if the fellowship stayed together and just went on adventures together. boramir playing with merry and pippin, aragorn watching legolas and gimli bicker, and sam, frodo and gandalf just smoke pipeweed and enjoy nature

The first time I watched this was in b&w, so it took me a couple of times to realize the significance of the backgrounds behind Gimli & Legolas. (Whoops.) Everything else came across so well, even colorless, and with pigment it's even more beautiful. The fading conveys so much, especially at the end with everyone fading out in the order in which they left Arda one way or another. That bit was very emotional.

Can I just say how much I appreciate you for giving my boy Boromir some love too. The scene at 1:18 with him holding Merry and Pippin, that really hits me where I live. Amazing work, your illustration of the characters (and their interactons) reminds me how much I love this world.

Just a comment to let you know that since this came out, I have come back to this video countless times. Sometimes itjust pops into my head, sometimes because I know it'll make me feel inspired, sometimes just because I have rewatched lotr _again_ and am experiencing "the lotr feels", which this video encapsulates very well. I love how soft and tender your artstyle is with the music, love how every line fits the story and characters so well (as if the song was written for them) and how it leaves you calm and a little bit sad (in a good way), just how reading the books always make me feel. This is beyond amazing! And the Song was perfect! The Call is such a nostalgic song for me! It played at the end of Narnia Prince Caspian and I absolutely loved that movie as a child (ngl, Caspian was my first childhood movie crush and I only ever had 2 or 3 [Legolas was number 2 so I guess I have a type])! This was such a rush of memories and nostalgia that my body feels strange and I am in shock. This was so amazing thank you so much for this!! You are a blessing!

I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was eleven, so I have a deep love for this story and these characters, and I must say, this animatic was absolutely stunning! Your style is fantastic, the character designs were all so unique, and the way you presented this story was tear jerking and quite frankly beautiful. Even the color of the characters reminded me of the yellowed pages of the old LOTR books I owned. Thank you for this gem! I can’t wait to see what else you make, be it LOTR or not.

I sat down to watch the Lord of the Rings Trilogy with my father after years of him begging me to. And holy moly I fell so so hard into it. We're watching the Hobbit right now, and I'm borrowing the books from one of my cousins because if I liked the MOVIE that much... though, I'm kind of disappointed I didn't read it first seeing as it's my favorite thing to do to compare how characters look in movies vs. how I imagined them. But I have a feeling I will still thoroughly enjoy it.
