Man, I could not believe how amazing this fix worked! Awesome! Sure didnt want to spend $700 on 6 new 6v golf cart batteries. They were all aparently dry, voltage dropped down to 12-15 volts just on level ground, put water out of the hose in them all till they wafers were just covered and wham! back up to 39 volts and chipping along. Amazing. Didn't even have to charge them. I will go back to regular charging every few days. I only use it around the house, going to the mailbox 1/4 mile down the drive, and walking/trotting my dog. Thanks for awesome tip!

I've been looking into reviving sealed lead acid batteries [mostly 12 volt 7 amp hour and 18 amp hour sizes] and I have used the same method as you to get some of their capacity back again but I didn't use the lab power supply as I don't have one. [I used a 20 volt 500ma plug pack and a LM317 regulator wired up as a current limiter. Have you checked what the self discharge is per week?

Battery Acid is 1/3 sulfuric acid and 2/3 DISTILLED water.tap water will work in a pinch, or may be OK on older batts near the end of their life but not recomended. BTW. I've worked at a professional battery shop for almost 3 years. So I feel its reasonably safe to call myself an expert on this subject.

A battery in that state should ideally be charged at 7.6v for several hours to equalize it. I had a massive 255ah 12v AGM battery that was in a pretty bad way. I put almost 2 liters of deionized water in it and let it sit at 16v for a few hours each day. It is now a cross between flooded and AGM which consumes hardly any water. The final step in bringing it back to almost original condition was adding two 6800uf capacitors to the solar panel input on my pwm solar controller which had 8 100w panels on it. This resulted in a direct drive desulfator that really worked wonders in a matter of months.
Adding the capacitors in parallel with the solar panels gives the pulses more amps and it makes tazer noises now.

I found a very large battery washed up on my in-laws property from the creek. I was about to bring it home and see what I could do with it. It had like 8 caps on it if I remember right. When I tried taking one of the caps off with my fingers it turned to powder, I got one out and it had a very unusual screw type threading. Would you even mess with something like this that likely has creek water though it? I suspect this might be a 24v farm equipment battery.

yeah i prolly would mess with it just for fun. please take a picture and show me, or better yet a video!! i love finding stuff in the creek.
i would love to see you get it home and see how much it can be fixed. then you could rip it appart or take it to a local auto store and trade it for a differant dead battery from the recycling skid.

Ever had any luck repairing dead lithium-ion cells? I remember you tearing some apart and taking out the bad cells, but is there a way to use something like a dusulfinator on them? I know its tricky to get the cells balanced but it would be nice if there was a silver bullet to get the dead ones working again, an easy fix.

Can you make your own lead plates and make a supper battery? I knew a person who had bought some old surplus ship batteries "needed a fork lift to move them".
He used baking soda to wash them out and they recharged just fine. Now he has a back up battery bank that will last a week with out recharging. I would love to have batteries that strong but I don't live near a navy ship yard. Is it possible to make your own batteries, is there a substitute for lead?

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  Před 10 lety

it would be cheaper, more effective and easier to just use lithium-ion cells.
not counting lead-dioxide is the most poisonous form of lead. if you where going to work with the lead that much you would need hazmat equipment.

I understand. Its not easy to progress until you understand what you are doing and understanding what you have done, im still trying to get basic electronics down.
I have down loaded a desulfator build plans, they were free with the understanding that you could donate to further research if you were happy with the plans and you wanted to donate, "free, for short". I could give you the address if you want. It has the full parts list and build steps, its made on perforated circuit board so its very easy. Its pretty much spoon fed plans so you should have no problems making it your self, even if you don't understand electronics.
I plan on making one myself as well.
It also gives detailed instructions on how to use it and results normally see and what to do when your having problems, might be worth checking it out on trouble shooting problems with desulfinators.

I found a couple UPS/batteries (Im pretty sure they were 12v) at a good will but there were .85v and .15v so I didn't get them (typical luck). Im thinking it needs to be 50% for a chance to even recover, I wasn't able to get the caps off with the multimeter I had on me. Who knows how long they were there. If I can find a boat/deep cycle scrap yard I'll let you know what I find. Is there anyway I could test them besides a multimeter perhaps a load test, I was also thinking of a small 12v battery to charge from and see if it takes the current, so perhaps I need some diodes as well...

I have the same desulfator as you both do. I have found them to work okay but TIME is the element along with some battery TLC. I found I could get it to work but It took like 4-6 weeks on a 500ma trickle charge. I finally wired my desulfator to a male cigarette lighter plug this way I can move it from vehicle to vehicle etc. I just use jump leads if I want to go direct to a battery terminal. Im sure one of the higher price units with algorythms built in probably work better/faster. Great Video Rin.

Im not sure I would be able to recover and balance the lithium batteries.
I want to try and desulfate a dead battery back to full charge then convert it to alum. That seems very promising.
I would love to see you convert one of your desulfated batteries into an alum battery. I would also be interested to see if you could figure out how to keep
the water in the alum battery from freezing, maby some antifreeze?
A good performance test of the battery before and after converting it to alum would be very interesting also, and I don't think it would be expensive to do either.

A few things I wanted to correct..
Most batteries (auto, deep cycle, gel) are NOT 90% water and 5-10% sulfuric acid.
They are intact approx 70% to 30% sulfuric acid.
Moreover, reason you use Distilled water and NOT - TAP water because of the minerals it contains, thus creating more sulfation and significantly reducing the life and capacity of the battery. 😉

Ha ha you do have some fun, and thats how we all learn :-))
When i was a kid i used to bring things back from the rubbish dump, its amazing i never caught something really nasty but i didnt, clocks and electronics i loved taking to bits, so enjoyable to learn with stuff that didnt matter :-))
You construct using bits and bobs that dont matter, so you can experement and have some fun as well :-))

Tap water contains minerals. Minerals destroy the battery.
    Therefore, use demineralized water.
Learn about the chemistry of a battery before you give other people "good" advice.

There are a few suggestions for battery reconditioning
do not try to do this unless you are sure what you are doing - the acid can burn your skin
check the voltage first - there may be a kaput cell which will waste your time.
      Check the battery fluid.
attempt to completely recharge the battery.
(I read about these from Rapid renew roadmap site )

No the # of batteries is not all they care about, they care about how much lead is in it. If you take a large battery you need to give them maybe 4 or 5 of those smaller batteries to be "fair", otherwise they can say you are stealing from them.

If your unable to bring the pressure back to 12.3vdc the battery is still bad and this was unsuccessful. Yes the battery might power a light bulb.... you can power a light bulb with a potato.

Regular water has minerals in and you dont know what minerals they are Distilled water does not. Tap water at best reduces battery life at best.
