Rishi Sunak rules out 2 May general election

  • Rishi Sunak has ended weeks of speculation and said there will not be a general election on 2 May - the day of the local elections.
    The election needs to take place in the UK by the end of January 2025, and there had been speculation the prime minister could call it in the spring.
    "There won't be a general election on that day," he told ITV.
    "But when there is a general election, what matters is the choice."

    • @Locutus
      @Locutus Před 2 měsíci +2

      14 years ago, we had the 2010 Fixed Term Parliament Act, which fixed the date permanently, but this turned out to be disliked by Parliament during Brexit negotiations. Parliament could only call new elections if 2/3 of the House of Commons voted for it. However, the FTPA was repealed last year, allowing the PM to return to how it was was 13 years ago, where the PM could just call an election at their discretion.

      There is a law. It says that there has to be an election called by December 17. By the way, the Fixed term Parliaments act would not have changed this, it would have guaranteed that the election would be called in December, and eliminated the possibility of an earlier one anyways. Personally I think that the previous act limited the flexibility of Parliament in its ability to adapt to changing circumstances and so the current law is better.

      As bad at politics as Sunak is, I think even he realises a winter general election is a bad move for him. The core voters that he's relying on to avoid utter decimation at the ballot box are far less inclined to risk going out in the cold, whereas most of the rest of us who want the Conservatives out will go out to vote no matter what the weather is without having to think "will I get pneumonia and die if I go out today?"
      Not only that, but at the height of winter, just after Christmas, people are going to be much more acutely aware of how much they're spending on fuel/how little money they generally have.
      Having the election soon after the summer would be a bad move because the small boats crossing the channel and that will be back in the headlines, and therefore bad publicity about how he has failed right around the time of an election.
      Having an election during the summer would be a bad move because parliament would be in recess for a few weeks, so that'd be a bit of a mess to manage an election campaign around.
      Having an election in early summer will be a bad move because it's too soon after people have been asked to vote in local elections. It won't garner good-will to get people to vote more than once in the space of a couple of months.
      Realistically, the 2nd of May or some time in late October or early November are the least-worst options for him. Around that time of year, it's still relatively OK weather and late enough in the year that most of the small boats will have stopped coming over/the headlines have died down a fair bit and moved on to the next thing, whatever that will be. And people won't be yet feeling the pinch from heating bills too badly.
