The rise and cost of Ireland’s the anti-migrant movement

  • Ireland's Taoiseach has used a speech to the Irish diaspora in the US, to highlight that St Patrick - who is celebrated every March 17th - was a 'single, male, undocumented migrant'. Immigration protests have become a major thorn in Leo Varadker's side, dominating politics in cities, towns and villages.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    Much of the anger is linked to the struggle for housing, in a country where rent and property prices are among the highest in Europe. But there are fears that parts of the anti-migrant movement are being infiltrated by social media influencers, who are inflaming tensions further.

    I'm from Ireland, and what isn't mentioned here is the fact that there is a housing crisis and the medical service is on it's knees. Ireland can't cope with housing it's own people, and housing prices have gone beyond the reach of young Irish people. Also the medical service can't cope with the amount of sick people, people have to wait sometimes 3 weeks just to get a doctors appointment. If we can't look after our own, can we accept 15,000 immigrants per annum? This is the problem, not racism.

      Same argument were used when British people wrote (No Irish, no blacks, no dogs) on their doors!
      Irish people had to migrate from Ireland due to the famine and British occupation. I thought Irish people would be the most understanding of what it's like to be an Irish migrant/refugee (in the UK, US, or elsewhere), and therefore would treat migrants with dignity. Not to forget, Ireland, despite its housing crisis, accepted over 100 thousand Ukrainian refugees. I'm sure it can also welcome other non-white refugees.

    • @countsmyth
      @countsmyth Před 2 měsíci +41

      @@OmmOmm-mz6in That's exactly the problem. Nobody has a problem with migrants, the problem lies with the politicians and also misunderstanding of people vocalizing concern. If we have problems running our own country and healthcare service, can we accommodate 100 thousand Ukrainians not to mention refugees from other countries? The government has "housed" some Ukrainians in tents on the streets of Dublin. So apart from being misunderstood, the question still stands, shouldn't we be accepting numbers we can cater for? It's a case of simple economics, we can't finance this, so the government should pledge to accommodate numbers we can provide for.

    I am from Nepal and I did my dual Master's in Ireland. Lived in the heart of Dublin for 7.5 years before returning back home and now living in Canada. I am completely against illegal immigration apart from those that actually need protection for real and have been vetted thoroughly, which can be daunting and nearly impossible when the influx is in 10000s' or more. It is disheartening to see this happening in the place where I spent majority of my 20s' which is the most special decade of everybody's life and Ireland will always have a special place in my heart. During my stay, I found Irish people kind, caring, polite and generous apart from some occassional unpleasant instances (including a chef I worked with in a Madigan's pub in the city center who was an absolute knob) which I am sure happenes everywhere. Although the immigrants, majority of them will want to work for sure, however with this many arrivals, protest and unrest is understandable. I mean, for example, schools in Denmark removed pork from their menu to fit refugees' children needs. If you don't eat prok don't eat it, how is it justifiable a host country has to change its tradition and culture which they have been following for decades.

      Don't tell that to left wingers. They probably believe the Irish are white supremacists. They'll ignore all of Irish history, rife with being treated like the garbage of the Earth, the island was raided for slaves multiple times, and they have been poor as dirt forever.

      They quote that St. Patrick was a young, male, undocumented migrant.... seriously! It was 453 AD. The 5th Century!! They didn't have paper let alone documents! 99.5% of the very sparse population didn't read or write. Ch4 need to take a reality check. No wonder no one can take Chan. 4 news seriously.

      Same with mine and he had originally been a refugee in Europe but his parents had to pay a 50 pound deposit to be used for his return in order to be admitted to the UK as a refugee in the first place. Now they model refugee movements after that one but ignore the deposit part

      My parents came to Canada from the UK after WWII and were required to have a sponsor and enough money to look after themselves. They struggled a bit to make ends meet and never asked for, nor were provided, any support from the state. The one good thing was that jobs were plentiful and Canada was growing because it hadn’t been affected as badly by the war as the UK and Europe had been. My parents were grateful to be in a country that had such abundance and I am eternally grateful to have been born here. Any immigrants who display any aggressive, violent or problematic behaviour should be expelled asap. No more putting up with ingrates who are disrespectful to the counties that have offered them asylum. Immigrants should expect to assimilate into the new country as my parents did. No-one expects immigrants to completely abandon certain cultural elements, like foods for example, that are close to their hearts, but expecting the new country to bend over backwards to accommodate an immigrant’s religion, cultural practices etc is not acceptable. If this is what they expect, they should stay where they are but they won’t because they’re desperate to come to wealthier, more stable countries to take advantage of whatever they can get. 🇨🇦🤨
