Have you figured out that the girl he talks about from long ago. Is the Woman he is singing to yet?

I remember the first time hearing Meatloaf. My family was going tova baseball game in Boston and we stopped to get a bite to eat. They had a jukebox machine at each table and my older sister found Paradise by the Dashboard Light. She thought I would enjoy the baseball part. Anyway, I had to run out and buy the Bat out of Hell album that week and I still have it over 40 years later. Great talent who will be so missed. In my 60s, so many icons of my youth have passed, but left me with great memories and amazing music to still enjoy. Loved your analysis as always, Beth. Thank you.

First of all Beth is adorable. Second her intro is adorable. That said, I think the reason why he's such an emotional singer is because he struggled for love and respect. His high school football coach gave him that name, and the the stammer I suppose the rest is obvious.

    Longpigs: "On and On"
    Bill Withers: "Ain't No Sunshine"

Meatloaf is also one of my dads favorite artists. I grew up listening to him all the time. He is definitely one of the goats of hia time. RIP Meatloaf. I wish I could have seen him live especially in his prime.

Bat Out of Hell gave me refuge from a sad divorce. I was already dangerously vulnerable when a friends kids gave me the album for Christmas. They were thirteen. I was thirty three. What do they know, I thought. It's my favorite album ever.

I can only imagine the pride that was going through Jim Steinman as he played the piano, as Meatloaf was singing. I was fortunate to see Meatloaf in 1998. To the end of my days Meatloaf will still be my favorite singer. May both Jim and Meat Rest In Peace.

I hate to say it but I think of Meat as Dennis the bus driver in Spice World. Like two different people compared to the meat I stayed up late to watch on the Midnight special profusely sweating to the point he had to carry a towel to wipe down after each song.

I actually just picked up Bat Out Of Hell (along with the first Chicago album) on vinyl from a garage sale. It’s just banger after banger and For Crying Out Loud is such an amazing closer.

I couldn't help but check this one out. This has always been one of my favorites from Bat Out Of Hell. I was in college when this came out. Ended up being one of my breakup songs. I fell in love very early very hard. Then I had girlfriends and it was never the same. It explains why I was, the way I was. Lol I loved this album. A lot of the musicians got their breakout shortly after. I like hearing about the voice. I played trumpet for many years. I, like Marven Hamish, is a frustrated singer. I'd sing along, however no one would want to hear. Lol great commentary. I was late teens towards adult listening to him. And yes, I love good musician's with theatrics. Just fun to watch. Peace. Stay safe. God Speed. đŸ€˜ ❀

I love your comments on this. Meatloaf's performances were rock operas. He was singing this to me and through me, and having been there, I felt I was singing with him to the woman who got out of our bed. "Crying icicles ..." is how I felt, and 50+ years later, I still feel that way. This song is so sad -- heartbreaking really -- and there's so much regret, much the same feeling that I get from Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust."

In a song full of great lyrics, the line "You've been cold to me so long that I'm crying icicles instead of tears" has always been my favorite as well. For me, it is a line that I can easily relate to from personal experience.
Never really realized before how effortlessly Meatloaf sings in the vibrato, and that really is the key to his voice. His voice always has so much depth and sounds like it is coming from his very soul, and that is because of the vibrato. This is someone who never needed the echo box or multi-tracks. He could do with his voice what other people needed instrumentation to do.

Hello Beth, even though I am not a singer I enjoy how you explain how the singers do what they do. I am a big Meatloaf fan and have played his Eddie part in a Rocky Horror Picture Show Shadowcast for a long time. I would love to see you review his "Hot Patootie" performance from that movie. When Meatloaf got the part in the London play, the director told him that it was a very fast song and none of the other actors who played Eddie were able to sing all the words to "Hot Patootie" so he didn't have to worry about getting them all in. Meatloaf said it wasn't a problem and sang the song and nailed every word of it. Keep up the great content and I'll keep watching,

when this was first released everything else on the charts was crunchy rock like BTO or Carpenters (whom I love) as anything was possible in the wake of the Beatles disappearing. along came a full-on broadway-esque rock opera that blew away everything else it was compared to- 50's car rock- boom. rock opera like Tommy? boom. crooner rock like Eagles ballads or such- boom. everyone shifted away because there was no following in Meat or Jim's wake. after his passing I downloaded this (yet again- lost track of how many copies I've owned of this- maybe four or five vinyl, two cassettes, one eight-track, cd- 2 or 3, and at least two downloads, maybe 3.) and I've listened to it at least once a day. (I sleep 4 hours a night- a lot of time to fill). thank you for this Beth. rwoarrrw
