      Keegans Perm I never got to see Banks play, other than through old videos, but he was certainly legendary. It’s funny how he is best remembered for a save in a losing match but the man excelled on all levels. He won for club and country, and was indeed a super man when his playing days ended. The car accident that claimed his right eye and definitively ended his career happened just a few miles from where I was born and raised.
      He will be missed by so many. RIP Gordon Banks.

      Absolutely Spot on sir! I remember watching it as an 11 yr old live on television back in 1970!
      And I can honestly say I've never seen a better piece of football from Jarhzinios inch perfect cross to Pele's downward bullet header to banksy's brilliant save to tip it over the bar!!!
      And please bear in mind the match was played in the rarefied air of Guadalihara thousands of feet above sea level! So the ball would be moving a lot faster than at sea level!
      Also Banksy was on the near post when Jarhzinio crossed and got to the far post in under a second to save Pele's perfect header!!! Fantastic all of it!!!

      That's a very beautiful way to say it :-)
      Sometimes you just know that the keeper has to pull off a world class performance in order for the team to progress. Here in Denmark, it was Peter Schmeichel who did that in the Euro 1992 final against Germany, and his son, Kasper Schmeichel, nearly did it in the Euro 2020 semi final against England (In fact, it was a world class game from Kasper Scheichel, but that was not enough).

  • @PaulANUBIS1
    @PaulANUBIS1 Před 7 lety +635

    The reason it's the greatest save of all time is simple. Gordon Banks had 0.20 of a second to react to the header which bounced on impact making the save more difficult, Banks then not only had to dive low by 2.5 metres and to the right but backwards also. He then had to somehow scoop an incredibly heavy ball compared to today's wimpy fly away ball standards, and get it over the net from virtually off the floor. The sheer science and reactions needed make this the greatest save of all time

    • @bladechild2449
      @bladechild2449 Před 7 lety +16

      The heavy ball is a valid point. However, the so called science behind the reactions, physics, the fact it was behind him and he had to dive low is the reason people wrongly calculate this as the best save of all time. Anyone who has keeped to a certain degree will realize how easy those saves can be to pull off while looking absolutely worldy.
      Scooping up low bouncing shots is actually far easier physically with the momentum of the ball and helps the keeper to push the ball up and away. The fact he was diving slightly behind is actually easier for him in terms of a natural motion with his body and arm. If we're talking about saves diving back, Seaman's is actually more difficult because the ball has direct forward momentum, (not a momentum whereby the ball is already 45degrees up and away to safety, requiring a little lift from the keeper) and seaman has to push 100% the scoop forward while arguably travelling a lot further than banks.
      I seem to recall a save in Europe five or so years ago which absolutely trumped Banks' save because it was exactly the same, but the ball DID NOT bounce. The keeper dived low and somehow lifted the ball over the bar without the bounce. Now that was worth it's weight in gold, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was, or what the match was. I believe Chelsea were one of the teams.

    • @PaulANUBIS1
      @PaulANUBIS1 Před 7 lety +17

      BladeChild again he has to dive further and regardless of the ball bouncing slightly he still has to slam it up over the bar. Diving backwards and low is incredibly difficult and would suggest if you think it isn't then you are 1) a cat or 2) you don't know how difficult it truly is. It was the first of it's kind. A truly unique save. Only to be sort of re produced by Uniteds keeper years later in the Champions league. the spin produced to put that ball over is part luck part bloody strong wrist. It is regarded as the greatest save ever by a long margine. A bit like I'm not a big fan of the Beatles but I concede that they are the greatest band of all time. It is the same with this save. Pele The greatest forward ever, in posssibly the greatest team of all time against probably the greatest keeper, in what is regarded as the greatest world cup year, with the greatest save. Not just the pure science, but the surroundings, those players, the artistry of it. Nothing beats it. Nothing will even come close

      Fantastic words and sentiment - well said. I had a long talk with Gordon Banks at an exhibition in the early 90's and he told me that the the 1970 Brazilian foward line were "unbelievable" and "terrifying".....he was a warm, humble and very likeable man and I suspect no goalkeeper would dare say they were better.

    • @bladechild2449
      @bladechild2449 Před 7 lety +3

      PaulANUBIS1 Well, your point about the Beatles is kind of like nostalgic sentiment, and that's what I've always thought about people and Banks' save. Though really, you can't objectively measure music too much. This save, you can. And I stick by my interpretation of it. I have seen many better saves this century alone. What the situation was and that boding forward line of Brazil, and the fact it was Pele who headed it has nothing to do with the save itself.

    This is labelled 'The Greatest Ever Save' because it's probably the most iconic save in football, opposed to actually being the greatest ever save.
    What is the greatest ever save? Probably some Sunday League goalkeeper pulled it off but no one cares.
    It was headed by the best player in the world at the time, Pele, saved by the best goalkeeper in the world at the time, Banks. England had won the previous World Cup and both players were huge stars.
    Pele, arguably the best player ever, says that the best goalkeeper he ever faced was Gordon Banks.

    • @rgqwerty63
      @rgqwerty63 Před 10 lety +19

      I doubt a Sunday league keeper could ever make a save like that. Professional football is played at a much quicker speed and more intense level that amateur football. Amateur strikers can never generate the power that professionals can and professional keeps have inhuman reflexes so if there is a keeper out there playing a Sunday league, he would have been snapped up by a pro team years ago

    • @ZolaMagic25
      @ZolaMagic25 Před 10 lety +118

      rgqwerty63
      You have missed the point entirely.
      It goes without saying that professionals are fitter than amateurs and they have the mental strength to succeed at the highest level. This doesn't mean that an amateur can't have a shot as powerful or reflexes as sharp as a professional. That's a ridiculous thing to say.
      A goalkeeper doesn't have to be a world class player to pull off the greatest ever save. He doesn't even have to be a goalkeeper, let alone a professional.

    For everyone talking about Ochoa: take the Ochoa save from the World Cup, and factor in that Pele's header was bouncing off the ground, so it's trajectory changed and was much more difficult to follow than a ball travelling in a straight line. The ball's coming up, rather than down, so it's always moving away from the 'keeper. Banks has to dive lower and further back than Ochoa did, in order to get under the ball, which is much more difficult to do and takes more time: meaning less time to react. Then he has to scoop the ball with his hand, all while he's hitting the ground and having to deal with the recoil of his body impacting the ground, and get enough force behind the ball to push it up and over the bar, while Ochoa pushed the ball in the same direction that he was diving. This save is so much more difficult.

    Wonderful! But the save itself is the end piece of a magnificent flow of the physical energy of football at its supreme best: Carlos Alberto's initial pass, with the outside of his boot, goes beyond Terry Cooper on an out swinging arc, inviting Jarzinho to run on to it. Jarzinho's first touch takes him across Cooper, inviting the challenge for a Penalty, which Cooper chooses to resist. The ball's energy, reinvigorated by Jarzinho's touch accelerates to the dead ball line. Jarzinho, stretching to get there, whips the cross over on the half-volley, drop kick style, again putting pace on the ball. Lifted by the thrust of the cross, the ball goes higher than expected and yet, arriving at speed, rising higher than all, powering his head through the ball, is the greatest living footballer. The impact sends the ball downward once again at pace. Banks arches himself down and behind. The ball comes up off the turf and, in an echo of the bounce of the earlier cross, Banks' hand connects in resisting upward block to send the ball upward, ultimately over the bar. The thread of connection from Carlos Alberto's boot to Bank's hands is absolute. Quantum physics demonstrated with musical artistry on a field of grass.

    A lot of people just don't get why this was amazing.
    Go feel the sheer weight of a ball from the 70s compared to the lightweight things they use these days. This didn't just require acrobatic skill, this required so much strength given the momentum behind the ball. Plenty of keepers could get to it. But I doubt there are many who could get enough behind it to stop it, much less turn it over like that.

      You know that ball thing is a myth right? Modern balls weigh more or about the same than old balls, there's loads of articles on it and it was busted many years ago - it's an urban myth.
      Balls don't get harder either, have you ever had a mitre delta blasted at you? Fucking hurts, as it would in 1970 or 1870. It'd hurt more now though as players are far stronger and fitter than they were then when they had bad diets, smoked, and spent their weekends down the pub.
      It was a great save by a great player from a great player. The hyperbole about "it was all different back then" is just that, hyperbole. Neither of those 1970 teams would get near a modern team, they'd be worn out after 20 minutes and wouldn't cope with the speed, power and vision of modern players. Not to mention they'd all be sent off within ten minutes.

Many keepers make instinctive, reaction saves within reach of where they are positioned, but Banks travelled from post to post to make his save. For me, Banks is the greatest British keeper followed by Clemence. Lev Yashin though still takes some beating.

      He is very clearly close to centre of the posts when the header is struck. Phenomenal save, but he didn't dive 22 feet.

    RIP Pelé. The goals he scored were just as thrilling as his misses, like in this video against the defending world champions England (he assisted Jairzinho who scored the only goal) but also in the semi-finals of the same tournament when he dummied Uruguay's goalkeeper, Ladislao Mazurkiewicz, but his shot was just wide of the post.

    This is first WC I can remember and I still remember watching that save. I was lucky enough to see him play in a testimonial game against Brighton in the mid seventies. He stood out from the rest by a mile.

    Not only the greatest save ever, but Gordon was a true gentleman and a genuine ambassador for the game.
